In this video I'm going to explain why your sewing machine thread keeps bunching, and it's actually a very simple reason. When you thread your sewing machine you want to make sure you thread it properly. And that means that you need to thread it through your take up lever. Your take up lever is what controls your thread going up and down with your needle. And when you don't have your sewing thread through there then...you're gonna have a bad time.

Please help. I have checked and rechecked my machine. It is threaded properly but the bobbin thread on the bottom keeps knotting and the top thread wont keep tension so the stitches just pull out. I am frustrated to tears

This is great advice, SD! I work in a sewing machine retail shop and all too many times people who have come to me with the problem of thread nesting on the underside of their projects have been solved by me merely threading their machine properly, i.e. making sure the thread is in the take-up lever (and some customers have even driven over one-hundred miles from their home only to find that all I did was correctly thread their machine). Another problem is that people do no thread their machine with the presser foot raised so the tension discs are open when they are threading. Further, many people do not know that one does not pull the upper thread backwards when changing thread - pulling the thread backwards through the threading path only pulls any lint that may have accumulated back into the tension mechanisms. Another word of advise is to make sure your bobbin is correctly wound and many people forget to make sure their bobbin thread is securely in the tension spring of their bobbin case. I own too many sewing machines ranging in age from my treadle from the 1930's to the top-of-the-line of a current brand and none of them have ever needed repair since they have been routinely maintained. 👍

Thank you so much for making these videos! I started watching your channel a few years ago and yesterday I accidentally took the part that holds my bobbin out. After putting it back together and re-inserting the bobbin I was having trouble sewing again. I spent a while trying to fix it yesterday and today, always focusing on the bobbin and bobbin holder. I even took the plate off... My thread was bunching up on the bottom so I looked it up and when I saw your video I realized I'd made a rookie mistake. I was so focused on the lower half of my machine that I forgot to re-thread it before I wanted to sew again. You saved the day! Thank you so much, and thank you for keeping your videos brief (unlike my comment 🤪)!

Wrong. My momma told me how to thread it right, but I wasn't paying attention, 'cause it was the 1970s/80s and I wanted to be a "liberated woman." Well now 30 years after momma passed away I got some catching up to do. Thank God I found you! ❤

Omg 1:25 the frustration for me lately ! I enjoy trying different sewing projects but for THIS exact reason is why I take forever trying to perfect or even finish a project ! Man SD, I'm addicted just how you predicted. After losing 30 pounds, I've been fixing my shirts, pants, sweaters, you name it. Now, this video tells you something really important: get good thread. I purchased some at Amazon and my machine started doing was this video is all about. It was driving me crazy, well my addicted friends, for some reason my brother machine was putting too much tension on the needle and the upper thread. A quick visit to Michael's fix everything. Man, and this is only my first week.

Damn just want to thank you i been watching you for more than 2 years and you just saved me 100+ dollars from all the skills I learned from your videos. I had a comforter and bought a duvet cover for it and it basically looked like it was two sheets sewed together with an opening on top for the comforter to go in with buttons to close it for 120. I really was like this is so simple for so much and went and bought 2 target queen size sheets , buttons and got to copying the one i bought. Worked out super nice and was like sewing a huge shirt. The new things i learned was making buttonholes with the sewing machine and i never knew you can use a sewing machine for buttons which is damn cool . Hope all is well and hope to see new videos from you man

Oh my gosh thank you! After watching you while using my persona prs100 embroidery machine and after much stress from it nesting, I watched your video for any suggestions because I couldn't find much info on my machine. You suggested looking at the take up lever and that was my problem. I checked it and low and behold that was the problem all along. Thank you for reminding me to always check it. I will always now check it on my regular sewing machine also. Thank You!!

That's exactly what was wrong with my machine. And the funny thing is, my machine told me to check the upper threading. It didn't say check the take-up lever. I have a Brother Innovis with an auto-threader so I can't really see the take-up lever. 🤷🏽 I never noticed that there's a little window where you can see it. 'Preciate your help!

Oh, but that wasn't my reason, lol. On issues I had was buying thick nylon thread and using it in my bobbin as well. Figured out bobbin works better with smaller thread.

I WISH it was my take up lever. It wasn't this time. I'm going crazy trying to figure out what it is. And yes, I would love to hum the sewing machine across the room. It seems like almost every time I sit down I just sew literally about one 100th of the project and I'm 5 minutes into it, and the thing jams up. I am so fed up with this. I don't understand how anyone could even like sewing. I'm only sewing because I can't find the kind of seat cushions I want so I have to make my own cushion covers. Ugh.

Why do they hide the take up lever behind all that plastic? My Mom's old black & gold Singer had the take up lever right out there, where I could see it and thread it.
