I haven't seen much in the way of step by step instructions or video tutorials for rebuilding SU HIF 4 carburetors so I decided to make one. If you'll pardon the iffy video quality and my occasionally annoying commentary there's probably some useful information in here somewhere.
In this video I also go over adjusting float height and initial carburetor main jet settings. Sorry it's so long!

Excellent video. A clear step by step explanation of the rebuild process. Thank you. I feel more confident now tackling the job. FYI, the official MGB shop manual says dash pot oil should be 20 weight motor oil. Also describes how determine the correct amount.

Just bought a 1975 B GT with these carb's fitted. 50+ years of BMC cars and this is the first time I have come across these particular HIF4 units. Great video. Thanks for your time.

That was a huge help for me. I rebuilt and had high idle and idle screw wasn't touching the stop. Your video pointed out the cause being the groove needed in the new plate. Very well done and very helpful. Thanks for all the tips.

AWESOME video. Wish I had seen it before rebuilding my carbs. I may partially re-d o them as I think slight tweaks via the video will help correct high idle speed

Cant thank you enough for this video. Absolutely well done. Only thing I would add: Where to set the collar when setting the jet needle in the piston. (ANSWER: The surface of the collar should be level w the bottom surface of the piston. I had to dig around the internet for that. :) ).

Excellent video, thank you. One small correction, the enrichment fuel is actually introduced just downstream of the bridge. The hole under the throttle plate notch is for part throttle operation. I understand the smaller area results in higher velocity and better atomization.

Thanks for the info! It's definitely an odd design compared to "traditional" carburetors' choke mechanisms.

Well done! Good and clear Explanation. Pictures are a little to dark though, especially in the close ups (gap of the needle holder to the bridge)

The thicker the oil in damper, affects response. Thinner oil have to replace more often, faster response , yes true.

Great video many thanks - have you ever tried tomato ketchup and aluminium foil to clean up brass? Slather on the ketchup and clean off with scrunched up foil. Brings it right up and softer than sand/emery paper. Try it on your door knob!

Thanks! Most of the brass pieces come new with the rebuild kit. I can't think of any off the top of my head that would need to be refreshed on the carbs. Not visible ones anyway.

A quick question about the Choke Spindle, as shown at 10:05 of this video. On the left of it (as shown on screen), theres a captive steel washer. Should this washer rotate freely against the rest of the spindle ? Or does it stay stationary in relation to the spindle ?. My washer moves, but not freely (I can't tell wether it should or not) The washer is rusty on my part and I'm considering replacing the whole spindle (as this washer is captive). I'd be grateful for any advice.

If I recall correctly, that just centers it in the bore and wouldn't necessarily have to spin freely as long as the whole unit could still turn in the carburetor body.

The parts came from sucarb.co.uk/ and it was worth the wait! Cheaper than the US based suppliers and a more comprehensive parts list. The website is a bit difficult to navigate, but the parts were great! You can even get the sold throttle disks (without the valves) and the stay-up floats if you want!

Where did you get this kits from? Ooppss, vinegar will attack aluminum big time, I say no way! My older MGA cards I broke down SUs and used Dawn in a pan of hot water, let soak a few hours, looked brand new.
@MyMGBJourney
@MyMGBJourney 2 жыл бұрын
The kits came from sucarb.co.uk as this ended up being cheaper than any local suppliers and really didn't take that long to get in. In retrospect, I would have looked a little harder for the kit that included throttle blades with no poppet valve in them. I haven't watched my own video in a while, but I don't believe I used vinegar for anything on my carburetor.

My rebuild kit had both large and small spindle seals. six small and four large. Looking at the other carb (which I hadn't stripped down), the choke used the small seal. I assume the throttle spindles use the larger seals. Although I can't work out why I've got six of the smaller ones!. If I understand it all by the end, I'll post something here.
@MyMGBJourney

My kit had extra throttle shaft seals as well.

@@MyMGBJourneyThe larger seals are 'improved' throttle seals. Which can be used in addition to (or instead ?), of the smaller seals. Hopefully this information avoids somebody getting confused like I did. Thanks for the help :)

My assumption is to give some distinction between left and right. It's been a while, but if I remember correctly there wasn't anything that specifically said which was which if that was the case.
