this is too awesome 👌👌👌 loved the booklet format in Jaws. Cut down so much of the setup time, and the illustrations are also super cool and unique to each scenario.

My wife and I started with JotL too and eventually moved on to the full game. It's a perfect introduction. I think if I'd just jumped in to the original, I'd have been overwhelmed.

A number of retailers have indicated they will have stock in September. I have been checking a few in Melbourne.

They weren't part of the kickstarter but there was talk of retro actively adding them as purchasable supplements later like the removable sticker set was.

Yes elites do go first. That's why usually we will just number elites in our games as 1, 2, 3, etc... then the normal as the rest.

@@trajanic3623 Target has been aiming to keep a consistent low stock level, so it's been in and out of stock pretty much constantly ever since the initial release. Online stock is either unreliable or getting bought up by bots/scalpers as fast as it's announced, but if you go to a physical store, a lot of people have reported finding copies that way (often on endcaps in unexpected places, or by asking the right employee - though since I don't imagine most people who just walk into the shop and find it on shelf in the boardgame section will bother to report their experience, there's going to be a lot of selection bias in the reports). So no guarantees, but if you go looking, there's a reasonable chance you will find it.

If you have access to D&D or any other dungeon crawl game, go for those. This game does very little in the way uniqueness, gets monotonous very fast (as you you'll be doing the same thing every game with very little differences between them) and everything takes forever to do. Too many fiddly components! Zero decent storage options out of the box. Extreme set up and pack up times. The "excitement" and gimmicks wear thin fairly quickly. The personalized action deck is nice, but incredibly limited. Improvements take forever to obtain/"unlock". Missions/quests (of what I've played) are linear. Failure has you replay the mission. Every mission/quest comes down to 3 choices which conflict progress with each other. You can: finish the mission (co-op), finish your personal objectives (not co-op for most part), or grab loot (not co-op as its first come first serve, no sharing allowed). You do one of them, but sometimes you may be able to do 2 things. Given I spent AU$300 for the main game (second print) and sub-optimal storage inserts (not including postage), I didn't bother getting anything else. I don't know if the extra material actually adds and changes elements to make this fun for more than a few game sessions, but if it takes an expansion to make a game fun then it's not really worth it. If you play Warhammer Quest, you've pretty much got a similar experience, with dice rolling in place of constant deck shuffling. You can also get WHQ on PC and Ipad which eliminates components and physical space requirements. Also cheaper.

@@Kindlesmith70 Totally agree. My friend bought GH and we were excited about a long quest, but... It's totally fallen flat. The mechanics are so fiddly and technical, and you have to juggle a hand of attack cards that gradually get depleted as the scenario unfolds. Every scenario basically plays the same, just with slightly different opponents. There is no genuine sense of discovery. And if there are large numbers of creatures, each turn can take ages, with fiddly hit point tokens to keep track of. We enjoyed D&D Tomb of Annihilation much better. Scenarios are genuinely variable, lots of action, 20-sided dice for attacks, and the map unfolds gradually as you progress through a scenario. Will this be a dead-end with traps? Or have we stumbled across a horde of monsters? When will we turn the corner to find the final boss monster? Simple yet genuinely gripping.

Isaac's announcement was actually that he couldn't switch out the tiles for books in Frosthaven for a number of reasons (including random dungeons), but that based on the response to the books in JotL, he would be releasing book versions for both Gloomhaven and Frosthaven as a separate purchase later on. Best of both worlds, hooray!

Oddly enough, I'd recommend Inis. It's not story driven (but then again how long are you going to be waiting? Probably don't want to get stuck in a long story-based game.) Inis is competitive rather than cooperative, but what it does have is a battle-by-cards mechanism that you need to puzzle your way through.

Thunder stone quest, not really like gloomhaven but it’s a fun deck builder with a campaign (I use that loosely since the story isn’t great but it is a fun game) another one but it is super heavy is mage knight the board game which is an adventure game with card management and deck building

yeah, it took me and my girlfriend 3 tries in the same night, last one was at around 7 AM and it included me surviving with one health, being saved by the modifier. CRAZY INTENSE!!

In my experience manuals and books and stuff are generally pretty close to the same size as the box's footprint. If that's the case here (and it seems like it is), then having an A3 book would mean doubling the box size, and a large part of the reason for JotL's existence is to better fit on shelves at retailers like Target

@@wheeler68 Yeah makes sense. Opportunities for nice book-based maps seem to open up more at A3 though - including an A1 map with a supplementary book. Maybe if other games went this route, a slim A3 box could still work

I still want the tiles so that I can make custom scenarios, but the campaign book seems like a must.

The kickstarter campaign announced a map book is coming but not with the initial release. They actually mentioned custom scenarios, guest designers, and flexibilty as pros of tiles. They beleieved doing their guest scenarios with a book would delay release a long time aince the scenarios dont exist yet. Its an interesting compromise.

There’s not much role playing in Gloomhaven beyond the branching story. The appeal is more he combat engine and not needing a DM. One thing that helps a lot with liking gloomhaven is having everyone download the app. It cuts half an hour of busy work out of the game which really improves the experience

3 years later, but just to let you know that they recently announced an RPG version of Gloomhaven which sounds like it's going to be much more similar to D&D. Might be something you're interested in.

The +1 doesn't come from the attack modifier card (which is ignored due to disadvantage). It comes from the attack card stating what the creatures do on their turn (ie Attack +1, rage 3). These cards were a red colour in base Gloomhaven, and were unique to different types of enemies.

Elemental Magic is actually fairly well thought out. Several items and classes are based around the way elements work. Some classes don't do anything with elements, others require you to make specific choices to make use of elements. It's also worth noting that many monsters consume elements to change or upgrade their attacks. I would recommend only changing it after you've played the game a lot and have a strong handle of the ebb and flow of the mechanics.

Hate to break it to you, but I think it's really hard to find right now. I had to drive an hour and a half to get my copy.

I used to love Descent but don’t play it now because Gloomhaven has superseded it in most senses. Not needing a GM/ DM is an advantage for me and although Descent now has an app to act as the DM, it’s not built into the game from the ground up. Most turns in Descent are broadly similar (move, rolls some dice, figure out what all the symbols mean, do some damage, maybe use a special power). It’s a fun dungeon crawler and I had a lot of fun with it. Gloomhaven offers more of an evolving puzzle with more interesting tactical choices at each turn. Your deck of cards define your characters actions, your stamina and (in part) your health. Rather than being limited to a couple of choices (do I move or attack twice?) each turn you are presented with a suite of actions and options. Some are simply moves or attacks (indeed every card doubles as a base attack or base move) but across all the characters (4 in JOTL and 17 in GH) there is a huge variety of actions (summon creatures, push, pull, create obstacles, heal, curse enemies etc) all offering a choice. As you go through the missions your options narrow (through fatigue) until you’re making hard choices each turn. We generally play on “hard” difficulty and we’ve had so many last gasp wins from the jaws of defeat in “full” Gloomhaven that are seared into our collective memory. It’s brilliant (but you really, really want a spare table to leave big Gloomhaven set up as the set-up/ tear down time is substantial). I’ve not even mentioned the elements, enhancements (such a great way), your (unique) modifier deck with perks, battle goals, life goals or prosperity that add extra layers to (big) GH. It’s the best game I’ve ever played. I’m merely sad that we’ve pretty much finished it
