The Genesis will be slightly faster because it has a helical diff from the factory. The 370Z has a VSLD and once it starts heating up its pretty much an open LSD. The weight difference is only about 200 lbs in between them with the Z being lighter. I track a 370z and my brother tracks his 3.8 Genesis track spec so I know how it will end lol

It's the fact that they picked a the lowest package on the oldest generation using the smallest engine. They picked the only one that a BRZ could "beat". I understand the engine because the 3.8 is more close to the 370z however don't pick the worst preforming 2.0 model on the track you can find and then act like the car preforms worst than a BRZ

I really would have liked to see a BK2 (facelifted) Gen Coupe vs the FR-S. It’s up about 70 hp on the FR-S, but I’d imagine that the FR-S does better in the corners. It would have been interesting to see the difference in heat soak, and overall performance. Besides that, I think if anyone is going for a Gen Coupe 2.0T, they’ll likely go BK2 for the various upgrades over the BK1.

I've owned a 2013 Genesis coupe 3.8 Track AT and currently drive a 2017 BRZ Limited MT. I can tell you 100% the genesis exhaust note was Amazing with a muffler delete and a resonator. Not too loud, Godzilla vibes at WOT but fit and finish wasn't great. Lots of little rattles and vibrations, traction control was a little tricky not exactly confidence inspiring at the limit. But it will drift. Rods are like rubber bands on the 3.8 so no forced induction for you! But I hear the 2.0T can easilly make 300 WHP. Tuning the genesis isn't super easy or at least it was daunting enough that I didn't do it but if I would have I think Bisimoto would have bern the way to go. Great engine if you put in forged rods and pistons but cost is pretty prohibitive for the average Joe. BRZ needs a Tomei Exhaust for that perfect sound. Unequal length headers give a great Subaru rumble and improved mid range eliminating that evil torque dip or Equal length headers give a nice smooth sound and increased flow at higher RPM. Fit and finish is pretty dang good if I do say so myself. Ecutek tuners are the way to go. Openflash is a little cheaper and might seem easier for tuning the 86 but I would only suggest it if you're staying stock or very lightly modifying the car. E85 makes the FA20 very happy as long as the outside temperatures are above 40°f any colder and it's gonna be hard to get her started up. Driving at the limit the twins are super predictable and extremely fun! If you have any drifting or driving skill at all, the 86 or BRZ will make you feel like a pro. For the price, quality of vehicle, and aftermarket support I would suggest the BRZ, FR-S, or GT-86

Possibly a short throw and bushings/good trans fluid could bring it around? Suspension possibly BC coilovers or spring/shock combination with sways and bushings? Maybe there is a flash or piggyback that can take care of the rev hang and an intercooler or meth injection could round out the car then back to TMP to show the improvements for a finale? I think it depends on what you intend to do with the car. The Genesis' saving grace is the bigger engine especially in the 2nd gen. But it's a fact that it's a heavier, bulkier car. If you just want a sporty daily, but plan to do basic mods I'd recommend the Genesis. It's easier to get in and out of and has a more luxury focused interior when you get the options. Most Genesis owners usually just do basic mods and stop. I've seen about 2 with widebodies in person, and few with serious engine mods. The toyobaru frs on the other hand is more for someone who plans to build. It's much lighter and far more nimble making it a far better platform to build upon. You can dispute that if you want but it has far more aftermarket support for a reason. There's also a good bit of them used by racing teams for various styles. I'm a built > bought kind of person who likes to really make a car their own so I'd opt for the brz anyday if I could only have one. If I had them both, the Genesis would be my daily and the brz would be my weekend warrior with far more money dumped into it.

@@jstos3675 that's gonna depend on how spirited your driving is and how much you do. I'm more toward cornering for that stuff. But I ACTIVELY go drive that windy roads. Just picked up a genesis coupe 2012 base model for 4800 with a clean title they are becoming very cheap in the used market now already have it on coil overs solid rear diff bushings and have done full tune up. Trying to source a lsd diff to swap and brembos then plan on building the motor but mine doesn’t have rev hang like yours does. There is still an ok after market support for the gc.

Genesis Coupe is more of a GT car, designed to compete against mainly Infiniti G35/G37, V6 Mustang and Camaro. BRZ/FR-S/86 were designed as sports cars from the ground up. However, it’s still nice to see a comparison video like this. I would agree with a lot of people commenting here though, would’ve been a much better comparison if the Genesis Coupe was an R-Spec or Track version, with factory upgraded brakes, suspension and LSD (and a lot less miles lol). A facelifted BK2 Genesis with 270hp 2.0T would also be nice to compare against FR-S/BRZ since it’s still cheaper or about the same price, and since the car is heavier, the extra power would make it a better comparison. One is better handling sports car, other is more comfortable and faster (V6 or ‘13+ 2.0T) grand tourer.

About the power down due to the heat you mentioned, yeah it is typical problem on older Genesis coupe 2.0 Turbos. Mine had same problem so that it slowed down right after 3 laps or so and once it happens, it is done for a day. It does not cool down back to normal pace for entire day. They have too small radiator for a 1-bar turbo sport coupe. The newer 2.0T has bit larger radiator just like 3.8 and kinda solves the problem a bit. Still every track guys with Genesis Coupe here in Korea install aftermarket radiator to actually get rid of the problem.

And yeah the rev hung up on the top even the clutch is disengaged is a bit of common in older Hyundai's manual shifter cars. The flywheel is heavy(stock is dual mass) and ISC valve setting is somewhat too aggressive. Although mapping the ecu may be able to ease this issue, there is no perfect solution. Since modern N cars doesn't have this issue as far as I know, it is just the old Hyundai's thing commonly exist from mundane Elantra to 3.8 Genesis coupe

255 width front tires on the BRZ when it came with 215's stock. That's a lot of tire 😅. I had Continental ExtremeContact Sports on my MINI and I LOVED them. I currently have General G-Max RS summer tires on my GTI. General is owned by Continental and some RS's are made in Germany (at least the 225/45/17's are). They had great reviews from customers on Tire Rack so I went for it, around $400 for a set of 4. Long story short I think they're just okay. Should've paid the around $600 for the Continentals. RS's grip but steering response is a little dull and feel numb when temperatures drop below 65F which is just dumb, even for a summer tire. Sidewalls are too soft like the old Continental DW's as well. That said, huge upgrade over all-seasons.

This comparison is good but a better and arguably more fair comparison to the FRS would have been a BK2 2.0t since the first year of the FRS was 2012 and a year later they had switched to direct injection on the Genesis. The BK2 is in every way superior to the first gen, especially the Track package. My friend owns a 2010 with a BK2 engine running a GT3076 @ 28 psi and it's a beastly little 4 cyl street car.

Curtis Scafe on a track the tire and wheel size is extremely important even on stock motor. It helps with grip. The stock tires on a FRS/BRZ are 17x7.5 which is extremely narrow and not optimized for track.

Completely different car from the base 10-12 2.0 The tighter suspension, brembos, and limited slip differential in the RSpec make the 2.0 a completely different animal. Any GenCoupe that is a RSpec is infinitely better than the base Gen Base gens are literally a blank slate that have to be modded

Over time the quality of parts shows. The Genesis is a base 2.0T model. If the RSpec I think itd do better with the suspension, brembos, and lsd. BK2 would be even more evident. As is here the shifter is pretty meh. Needs new bushings as such. The BRZ actually seems fairly nice and crisp. Bushings and such head its quality. Overall for a sportscar Id go BRZ. GT daily Id go Genesis Coupe.
