Good info Matty! I didn’t realize how good the crawl ratio is in the crosstrek sport. Also, I need to point out that your build with the lighter tires makes a difference too! Rotational mass is 4x that of static weight. So let’s just say your wheel is 7 lbs. lighter that’s like carrying 112 lbs. less weight. This also increases your Wheel horsepower and wheel torque. Hey, that would make a good video!

Hey Jon! Yeah, the lighter wheels and tires help a lot. On my 24FW, I saved 5.4 pounds per corner when I switched to my Enkei RPF1s and Nitto Nomad Grapplers, DESPITE the tires being 1.9" taller and 0.7" wider! I made a video all about my wheel and tire setup. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/md6PZ62Hq9fLiZc.html It was a very dramatic difference when I switched from Motegi wheels and KO2 tires.

Been looking for the crawl ratio on the CTW for a while now, super interesting. Car is definitely a little stump puller. Thanks for putting this together.

Yeah, with its larger 2.5L engine, better gearing, small size and weight, it’s going to be crazy capable off road. Subaru did a great thing with their Wilderness trim.

@MatthewHeiskell yep. Absolutely love mine so far. Kinda figure before I take it on any serious offroading I need to get some better skid plates and a full size spare, though.

Yes! Skidplates are an absolute must! Are you near New Mexico? I could make an awesome aluminum bumper for it that would significantly improve the approach angle. It would include an engine skid, so something to consider before buying skids.

Love this lol. Unfortunately I am in the pnw. I was eyeing the body armor hiline bumper but have a hard time justifying the cost and cutting pieces off the bumper of my brand new car lmao. Curious as to why you're not a fan of the vents on the primitive skids.

Yeah, haha a little painful to cut up a new car. My friend has the Body Armor 4x4 winch bumper. I helped him install it. It’s good, but it doesn’t improve the approach angle. I not a fan of the vents in the primitive skids for a few reasons: 1 they don’t work, the gap just isn’t large enough to flow air. 2 they weaken the skid. 3 they make the skid slide less easily. Especially backward when you’re trying to get out of a bad situation.

Having owned a 2013 Crosstrek I can assure you it was gutless. 4 people and luggage for a cabin trip, going up a 7% grade at highway speed? Not happening.

Thanks for sharing your first hand experience! It sounds like Crosstreks really need the larger 2.5L engine, like the Crosstrek Wilderness or Crosstrek Sport.

I have a '23 Crosstrek "Outdoor," a trim specific to Canada. According to Subaru Canada's available tech sheet, this one has the 3.9 rear end and the larger 2.5L engine. However, my understanding was the similar American '21-'23 Sport models also had the 3.9 rear and 2.5L motor. They only recently changed it to the 3.7 for the third gen model year 2024 cars. I suspect your data source is incorrect. Its either that, or Canada got a nice unmentioned boost in our trim. Interesting topic, anyway

Your "Outdoor" trim Crosstrek sounds awesome with the larger 2.5L engine and 3.9 diff gears! I assume it has a first gear of 4.07 too. Can you confirm that? I just double checked my data, I'm seeing 2.7 diff gears in the American Crosstrek Sport. Seems like y'all got a good thing with that "Outdoor" Crosstrek up there in Canada!

its not so much about x mode and clutch slipping on manuals as it is about the lack of torque converter, which results in lower peak wheel torque. Remember torque converters can multiply torque which means climbing steeper grades. not having to slip clutch is a secondary benefit to autos

Yeah, I hear ya! A 6 speed manual sounds like a good time. I just want them to make one with a 2.5L engine.

You can make a video of when and in what situations you should use the x-mode ?

I just turn it on when I encounter a tricky section like deep mud, snow, rough terrain or something that might cause a wheel to lift.

Hi there. I am from Greece and i have a 2014 Subaru XV (Crosstrek ) manual with 1.6 lt engine and dual range. As @bruceyyyy mentioned when going uphill and especially with AC ON the car is struggling. On the other hand i use low range when offroading and it turns into beast mode(You can see that from my uploaded videos). Definitely needs to be tuned. As for the clutch i have no issues with overheating . Its true that low range and LSD do the job. From the car data it says low range ratio 1.447 does this change the final crawl ratio? By the way nice channel.

In the Forester there is a better approach engle then the crosstrek, so you might take more data to consider which to choose.
