I just finished timing belt service on Saturday on my 2002 Forester. I want to say thank you for teaching me how to do it. Installing the new water pump was the only struggle do to the gasket moving around. I got it on the 3rd try. Thanks again👍 I also did the valve cover gaskets, plugs and wires. The spark plug tubes were full of oil. New plugs and wire gave so much power back when it was finished.💪

the closed cast impeller is the better design. i try to use them when ever possible. i used to be able to get NPW brand pumps (which have closed impellers and made in Japan)at my local API but they dont carry them anymore. the stamped open impeller design is less efficient - likely made to cut costs

When I did my 04 Forester XT TB replacement I did the water pump as well and sourced the closed cast impeller from the local Subaru dealer, that water pump was for some reason exactly half the price of pressed steel open impeller in my part of the world, I assume it was older stock and therefore cheaper.

Now you should do a video on Oil Cooler part numbers LOL
@volks-jager
@volks-jager 2 жыл бұрын
or part numbers to eliminate the oil cooler... on the non turbo cars they serve zero purpose and are very leak prone. here in the north just about every one i see is either leaking oil or the metal pipe rusts out and leaks coolant. oil filter fitting, 1 hex plug and either a non cooler water pump or a rubber cap and the cooler is gone.
@stevemartegani
@stevemartegani 2 жыл бұрын
@@volks-jager I rarely see leaks there here in the non-rust belt. If anything its the red o-ring on the cooler. With temps here that hit 110+F, the factory oil coolers especially on cars driven hard (even NA cars) do drop oil temps 15 degrees or more on the track. In colder climates, these coolers can bring engine temps up faster. They even offered them as a dealer installed accessory kit for Foresters for awhile, mostly for thst purpose or towing.
@volks-jager
@volks-jager 2 жыл бұрын
@@stevemartegani 99.99% of subies up here are not driven hard or used for towing. (and race cars are whole different story). up here they are pretty much the vehicle of choice for Suzy soccer mom, old people and hippies. just about every one i get in with a oil cooler it is leaking oil profusely and when the low mounted metal tube that get hits with tons of salt rusts out you get a catastrophic coolant loss. ive converted well over 100 cars to the non oil cooler setup - simpler and it never leaks.

I can't help but to wonder if this wasn't a bit of a engineering eff-up from Subaru/FHI's part. Surely there must have been a better way to go around this than having so many different water pumps.
@stevemartegani
@stevemartegani 2 жыл бұрын
Its not a screw up at all, changing such an inexpensive part to accommodate multiple engine layouts is incredibly smart engineering. The differences are entirely due to just header layouts, turbo vs non turbo, and whether or not the engine needs an oil cooler. With several options here, you can easily change components and not have to redesign massive expensive parts of the motor. Better yet, this makes it incredibly useful for aftermarket motor building as you can add or subtract the factory oil coolers with these engines easily, change out to different headers, or even do various things with turbo coolant feed if needed. Just pick the right water pump and it can solve several changes you make.

I bought a whole timing belt kit from Subaru half a year ago for my JDM 1998 Impreza WRX STI, the water pump included in the kit was 21111AA026. Also come with double bearing lower idler, but the factory smallest idler supply was 13073AA200 simgle bearing idler. I have a question that someone else has already mentioned here. It's with regards to the pros and cons of the types of impeller used. Most people say that the cast impeller is either more efficient or cavitates less at high rpm. We'll also see more stamped units that are supposedly more cost effective. Probably because those models were produced in higher numbers??? I see one of the pumps you mentioned was the HV cast unit and seems to confirm this theory. However, I see you showed other pumps also used in turbo applications that have stamped impellers instead. What's your opinion on that? Does this theory carry any weight?
