Subaru’s hybrid technology, the 2.0L petrol, 4 cylinder, 4 stroke e-BOXER engine works efficiently and seamlessly with the electric motor. This is such an effective 4 wheel drive SUV, capable both on road and off road.
We wanted to see if and how well this new PHEV would go about its everyday business and also if it would tow on electric power. This more eco-friendly is the heading in the right direction to answer our hybrid or electric vehicle needs especially for caravanning or trailers.

I had a Subaru Outback, Subaru are the most underated cars in the UK. They are everywhere in the USA and Australia and for good reason, they are not flashy but they just work.

Totally agree Adam, we had one as a family car in the 1980’s when we lived in a remote location in the Yorkshire Dales. They are a genuine 4x4. Thanks for watching 👍

Great review guys! I’ve watched some of your caravan content, but stumbled across this when looking for reviews of the Forester. Your review is more detailed and of better quality than a lot of the mainstream car review channels. The fact that you focus also on its towing credentials is just a bonus. Really informative and detailed, hope you can do more like this.

Thank you for another detailed review. My wife has had the opportunity to tow with this vehicle, she did the same as you by putting the gear leaver into manual when trying to select drive. she also mentioned that it did feel a little gutless with a caravan on the back at 85% but had no issues getting up to speed. Thanks

I LOVE THIS CAR!!! I drive a Citroen grande Picasso. It has all of the same features almost exactly but it’s not an EV. I owned the Mitsubishi PHEV and it was appalling on electric and petrol. I’ll give it a test and see how suitable for me the return on the electric sounds impressive very excited! Thank you for testing it for us! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

That is a REALLY good car review (I mean the quality of the review rather than what you think of the vehicle - though it is clear you thought highly of the vehicle itself). Very helpful. I am currently in Ullapool and my brother in law here has a Subaru Forester (but not a hybrid version). Very good in the winter conditions up here, which are a little more extreme than in North Yorkshire, when you’ve got to do the journey over the other side, across to Inverness).

Good one guys and a seemingly quite impressive first run in a hybrid, albeit only suitable for lighter tugging... 👍🏻 You mention it is regenerative, which I get and it has to be the way to go, but is it also pluggable. as in PHEV style of hybrid... 🤷🏼‍♂️ At least the industry is thinking about going in the right direction, possibly, maybe... 👀 Thanks again for pulling it together and being at the forefront... 👏🏻 Cheers guys, all the best, Rog... 👍🏻 😉 🐍

Thanks Rog, no it is HEV not PHEV so no plugging required. It continually recharged the battery whilst driving. Thanks for watching 👍

Great review. It certainly is kitted to the max. Shame it's not powerful enough for the Isonzo, but it is a step in the right direction. I was a Richard Burns fan rather than Colin McRae, but yes, an iconic car.

Great video guys, think the motor manufacturers really need to pull there fingers out to come up with an alternative to ICE vehicles. The ban is now only 15 years away which now includes HEV and PHEV.

Great review, i love that car. I have a Diesel Electric, a Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4, over 200HP and can you believe the towing capacity is only 500kg, That’s because of the electric batteries apparently, i love it as a daily driver but wish i’d have done my homework as to how it would tow, i just assumed it would have the towing capacity for anything i bought.

As far as im aware, in the US they get 180bhp in this, whereas we only get 150bhp. Come on Subaru, why the inconsistency in models across the different markets ?

Good review. Would have been interesting to see it towing a larger caravan (~1400kg) as I would hazard a guess it would struggle power / economy wise.

But there is no spare tyre for the e boxer mild hybrid. If tyre puncture, what can u do ?

Like many vehicles that dont come with a spare these days, they supply a kit that coats the inside to fill the puncture. You then inflate the tyre and it should get you to a garage to replace the tyre. If you have a full blow out then you would need to be recovered or remove the wheel and take it to be repaired. Mpg sounds low for the small engine and hybrid system, expect better.. I could easily get 45-50mpg out of my old Lexus 450h..3,5l v6.. but it got stolen last week, hence I’m here looking for a replacement…

Have to add another comment now ive watched this video. Great reviewers, reminds me of the old Top Gear with the likeable, knowledgable presenters. I shall be going to the Subaru showroom in the next couple of years hopefully, as this would be my ideal long term car. The green colour is probably my choice, fits in with rural living :)

Great, underpowered car for older people ...like me :) In US they at least sell 182 HP version. In EU only Eco- no-accel variant.

Great colour and a good allrounder. I'd still prefer a Diesel though. Subaru make some great Estates/SUV vehicles. shame they don't sell well enough over here.

Lovely car but shockingly expensive and emissions are too high for a new car in the EU. Also the 2.0 engine isn’t quite enough for the size of the car. A shame as these issues stopped me buying one.

Foresters in The USA can tow only 1500 lbs or about 680 kilos. Heard different reason for why us spec cars have much lower tow ratings. One being in the US cars must still pass emissions while towing. Other reason I hear is lawyers. BTW, it common for American spec cars to have drastically lower tow ratings than their twins in Europe.

Great video, I am always facinated about how things are done in other countries. Subaru can't produce enough cars to meet US demand, as a result they hold there value very well. I have a 2018 Forester.

Thanks Jim, Yes thats a considerably lower tow amount indeed. Do your American Subarus have larger petrol engines with more power? I presume to keep emissions down here in the UK we get a smaller engine🤔 Thanks for watching in the US 👍

85% match not 95% as you said

Thanks Warman, 85% is the recommended but the 95% is a maximum match most insurance companies will insure to if you check the terms and conditions. Due to that I mention both but would never recommend towing over the 95% without checking your own insurance.

I really don't see the point in this car especially if you intend to tow, you would be better going for the full diesel version, more power and about the same mpg

Thanks Retro, fair comment and valid point, I suppose with the current climate we have to think about the future value of diesel cars in the next few years and potential increases of fuel tax. The hybrid does allow you to reduce emissions in towns and cities too and if they ban diesel cars like they are talking about is limits your freedom with a diesel.
