Subaru Forester in Deep Snow

February 9, 2013 in western Maine. The day after record breaking storm Nemo. I wanted to see if my 2004 Subaru Forester could make it up the hill and out of the driveway through over 2 feet of snow. Forester has studded snow tires on steel wheels.

I have an '04 WRX Wagon. Add studdless snow tires and it's unstoppable in the snow. I've passed SOOOOO many people in the snow it's ridiculous. I love this car.

I just got a 98 forester a few months ago. Put 4 brand new snow tires on steelies for the winter. Big blizzard coming today, and I'm like a kid on Christmas waiting for big accumulations so I ca play in it with my Subie! Love this video!

I had that same Forester but in an XT. Same color and all. That car was an absolute beast in the snow. I used to love gunning it from a red light when there was a lot of snow. I’d look in my mirror and everyone else would just be sitting back there trying to move.

Audi A6 3.0 TDI Quattro here from 2011 with 340.000 km on the dial. Can confirm. Subarus and Audis have the best 4WD and are perfect for winter :)

@@andersborum9267 They are a bit low though, I wish I had more ground clearance. I have an A4 from 2004. Though I remember in my friend's A6 from -94 we went through some forest road that looked pretty much like in the vid. Looked like four snow blowers at the wheels.

Great video. In 2010 my wife didn't think I could get going in 3 feet of snow in the above ground parking lot of our then apartment. I cleared the windows and roof and said Lets go. She rolled her eyes and refused to get in for no reason. I drove off 30 feet, looked back and she had the look of "I'll never hear the end of it.. but that was awesome" on her face.

My Legacy GT-B could keep going with powder halfway up it’s doors and right into its grill, never did find the amount of snow it couldn’t handle, which was impressive for its super short ride height

You know how many times you should have to deal with head gaskets, never. Do some research. Subarus are famous for blowing head gaskets, because they are boxer garbage.

I see a bunch of comments from people thinking he made a cold start and gave it hell, but that doesn't seem to be how it really happened since there was already a set of tracks leading to the car and the windshield wipers had already been running when the video showed him first walking out there. Of course, different kinds of snow are more or less difficult to drive through, and that snow was kind of powdery, but that's still pretty impressive capability.

Depends what kind of snow it is. Fluffier the easier it is to get through. Try that in some dense wet snow

If you live anywhere where there is alot of snow, you will know that there are three types of snow: heavy snow, wet snow, and powdery snow. What you have here is powdery snow. It is the easiest to plow bc it is light, but it is also the most dangerous to drive in bc it is the most slick.

Great video! Just goes to show that a great snow tire with AWD on a Subaru is a solid combination! They say the Winter force is an all around better tire for the deepest of snow compared to other brands that are a bit quite etc.. sometimes being quit might not work out so well in snow like this lol

I have Michelin Xice tire on my outback, this snow is nothing to my car with those tires. You put those on, and you won't have to back up, or get a run for anything. Unstoppable.

@Bert Clayton they say do that with all cars unless its carbeurated. When a car is cold gas doesnt act the same as when its warm it is alot harder for it to combust properly when it is cold so some gas is left in the cylinders while idling acting as a solvent cleaning the oil off of the walls on the cylinders creating more friction inducing more wear. there is not much oil pressure plus the oil is cold and thick so it's actually worse on your car letting it idle to warm up than it is to drive it. That doesnt mean floor it when its ice cold just putt around slowly and be gentle with the throttle until it warms up and it will warm up quicker heating up the oil and engine faster with less damage to it. I start mine when its below zero F° let it run about 30 seconds and drive at about 1500 to 2k rpm for the first 5 minutes around the block a few times then go where I need to go.

Great vid! We have an '05 XT and I have had it in the Sierras in challenging road conditions. The thing is like a little goat, as good as any other 4WD I have had, including a Ford Explorer, BMW X5, and a Porsche Cayenne S.

I'm from the sub-tropics of Australia, where we have floods that leave behind thick mud either side of our creek as the water goes down. His snow technique looks close to, if not exactly what I do in my Land Rover for mud. It doesn't always work with the back & forth, and I just need to wait a day or so for it to dry a little more, before having another shot at it. After that, we're able to drive through the muck, up onto the far side of the creek, along the road and into town for supplies. It' such a good feeling.

Just got a new 2024 Subaru Forester and just had to deal with snow and ice and by quite far it is the best winter car i've ever had. And I dont even have snow tires on it. Just the all- season Falkens it came with.

The tires are what made all the difference. Not knocking Subarus, because they're fucking awesome, but studded snow tires + awd = these results every time. Still, I didn't think it had enough ground clearance to get through that, honestly, and it did it pretty easily.

I went across the United States from CA to MN in the dead of winter in a Toyota Venza’. And that vehicle is the bomb. WRT winter driving. All wheel drive. I was so comfortable in it. It got us safely to our destination. No problems at all. Too bad they stopped making them!

I’m driving my 3rd Subaru (drove a Legacy and Forester prior to my current Outback). I can relate to the video. It’s hard to deviate to another make once you drive a Subaru.

I remember being in Steamboat Colorado during a blizzard and my buddies SUV got stuck in the snow... we watched as multiple locals with Subarus just went flying past us no problem.

We've had 18 Subaru wagons 1981-2004. Only thing that stops them is snow jambed into the radiator. Slept in them to -28 camping while ice climbing near Lake Placid ...lots of memories. They aren't what they used to be after 2006...Toyota bought them.
