@@NathanElcoate sorry mate but they are not 50/50 maybe in a straight line on a sealed road but as soon as one of these wheels spins or turns the system will no longer be a 50/50 split especially when they are being abused like this off road, your basically driving a front wheel drive car when your off road like this in them. the way these complicated Subaru's operate They're designed for tarmac use. Maybe a dirt road. They are not even close to the rally spec awd systems they use in rally spec cars. Even the sti has a different awd system to the forrester.

People: "Subaru's aren't real 4wd's" Subaru owners: "Bet"
@daldrete01 Жыл бұрын
As a subaru owner I can definitely say they are not the real deal, but when you come out of a trail driving one, you leave all the jeep dudes scratching their heads wondering how you made it.
@GingerNingerGames Жыл бұрын
@@daldrete01 All you really need to remember is that a lot of the places people take a "Real 4wd" to are where our parents and their parents would take RWD yank tanks. It's more about driver ability than anything.
@AWDfreak Жыл бұрын
The older ones literally had 4WD gearboxes. The newer ones transitioned to AWD, though that big lineup change to AWD began in the early 1990's. The earliest AWD Subaru with a boxer engine was the Subaru Leone RX Turbo, if I'm not mistaken. I got myself a dual-range Subaru gearbox, but it isn't a 4WD. It's a dual-range AWD unit that, while capable, is not a 4WD as it does not have part-time 4WD. It is full-time AWD. I envy those who have an AWD (such as the full-size comfort-oriented Toyota Land Cruisers) with the ability to lock the center differential to make it mechanically operate as a 4WD when selected. All the benefits of AWD but with the capability of 4WD at the flip of a switch.
@GingerNingerGames Жыл бұрын
@@AWDfreak You can swap out the viscous center unit for a DCCD and then you have that exact functionality. Don't forget though, the viscous coupling is one of a kind, it uses heat to lock up, and they lock up fast. I track day my car before and after DCCD, the stock 4kg viscous center in the WRX 5 speed takes less than a second to achieve full lock when my foot was planted sideways through corners, on dirt. That's why they have a tendency to understeer under acceleration, because the front wheels receive drive very readily. Driving the car with the DCCD fully locked isn't that much different to the 4Kg center on dirt, all it really changed was that the car didn't lift off oversteer as readily because the center was staying locked, where with the viscous it'd pretty quickly unlock, allow the front to spin slower than the rear, regain traction and throw the tail around. Easily solved by just throwing the car around under power so the front wheels drag it around.
@AWDfreak Жыл бұрын
@@GingerNingerGames you're correct, I seem to have overlooked the fact that the DCCD has all that functionality. I know a DCCD unit can be done in a dual-range, but I'm a bit stubborn and I like the simplicity of upgrading the viscous coupler to maybe an 8kg or 12kg unit for off-road use. Thanks for bringing that up though, I'll have to keep it in mind if I get bored of the viscous coupling center differential.

Fingers crossed that you won't have the engine failure like every second one here in Europe...
@alexanderphilipgreen5 жыл бұрын
I have heard that the crank failures were on the earlier euro 4 engines that we never got in Australia. Haven't heard about any failing here yet. Both in the video have 200,000km +
@iimprezius8415 жыл бұрын
Nice to hear that. There were major problem with failing dual-mass flywheel which eventually snapped the crank and the block was dead. Then there's an unsolvable problem with the block itself. Because it's turbocharged diesel boxer engine, made from aluminum, it tends to bend. Because of material chosen and high compression characteristics, when "heavy feet" usage, sooner the problem may appear. So it's not necessarily the always problem, but rather usage problem. Users often don't care about to cool down the engine and turbo after spiritted driving, full gas when engine is cold, short distance driving, forgot to change the oil in time. That's mainly the sum of European driving habits. Fingers crossed!

@@michaelclark3192 how did you not have issues with the gearing given theres no low range? i have a usdm 5mt and have issues with the gearing on steep trails and soft sand
@michaelclark3192 Жыл бұрын
@@jellipig When I had my 05 SG XT manual the extra torque that the car had over the standard NA made up for it, and on steep slow sections I would just clutch kick to get the engine into boost as I had a heavy duty clutch. If I get another Forester I'd consider getting an NA gearbox with the low range on the XT and swapping out to SF 2.0 low range gears as they are much lower ratio to the standard SG and SH low range.

@@cyc00000 A lot of "4WDs" don't have lockers or LSDs. Some can't even get them aftermarket, but rear lockers and front LSDs are available for many Subarus nowadays. I'd like to see an armored, manual Crosstrek, with a rear locker and front LSD, tackle the trail in the vid...on mudders.
