In this video we take a look at what it takes to replace the radiator in a 2009 Subaru Tribeca. It really is not a bad job if you know what all to expect. I tried to share some of the things we learned here and some of the more difficult things to get to. As always its more than one way to do it. I shared the way I removed and replaced this one. One thing that is easier most likely is to remove upper tie bar and hood lock support first so some of the difficult connections and wire restraints can be removed much easier. Hope you find this helpful and thanks for watching!

Great video - super helpful. My radiator was leaking in the exact same location as your - wondering if others find the same. So I just replaced mine. I took your advice and removed the cross bar & hood release. Much easier to get things disconnected and getting the old radiator old and the new radiator in. On the installation of the new radiator, I left the fan assembly off. It allowed for easier connection of the transmission fluid lines. Leave the top hoses disconnected until after the fan assembly is back in place.

Quick tip for anyone doing this themselves. The oil cooler and the tranny cooler line can be blocked by popping a used spark plug in where it disconnects from the radiator. This will save u from having to do any extra work with your fluids!

I have a leak on our 2013... looks like a fairly straight forward process. Looking at the prices of the new hoses on RockAuto - I think for $40 roughly plus shipping you could just cut all the hoses and replace them. More than likely they need replacing anyway. Great Video this helps tremendously

I totally agree with the hose replacement. I ended up having to get one anyway. If you can plan to order them a head of time and have them is better for sure. Thanks for your kind comment!

Nice job! Smart move on the lower hose with the way you took it off at the thermostat and replacing it just to be safe. We're those locking slip joint pliers?
@ThriftyToolShed

Well, needle nose vise grips on the clamp that I left on and then yes the larger pliers were vise grips version of slip joint pliers, not really locking. Has the push button to adjust the different sizes etc. Thanks for your comment!

One more time, thank you! I had no idea how to disconnect the electrical connector off of the radiator. I'm changing mine too, a real pain on the rear end, but it's leaking on the bottom passanger side. The service manual requests to remove the front bumper. With your video, I have saved some time by not doing it. What did you do to make sure there is no air in the system?
@ThriftyToolShed
@ThriftyToolShed 2 жыл бұрын
after adding coolant I pulled up to a incline in my driveway to make sure the air would flow upward toward the radiator cap. I was prepared to loosen the top vent plug as mentioned in the video, but did not have to. Some people like to pull a vacuum on the system and pull the coolant in to keep air out also. I had no issue with mine though. Thanks for your comment!

What was supporting the condenser while it was unbolted from the radiator? There's an aluminum liquid line that can be damaged.

My Tribeca just overheated on me today- I pulled over quickly and found out there was no coolant in the radiator, I carry spare water and it literally pours out of the bottom of the radiator on the side where the drain valve is. It has never overheated before and the radiator has never leaked. Oddly enough I just had the timing chain cover resealed at my mechanic about a week ago. I am trying to think if there was something they did that could of caused the radiator leak, it seems weird to happen so soon after the repair. I cannot tell but am wondering if the bottom grommets are there or not. Not sure if that could of caused the radiator to fracture or something.

today I found my 09 Tribeca have the same radiator leak issue. Is necessary to buy the Original Subaru part? or OEM cheaper one is OK? Any suggestion?
@ThriftyToolShed
@ThriftyToolShed 2 жыл бұрын
I honestly feel like the cheaper one would be ok. I will say when I priced mine at the time it was not much more to go with Denso OEM so I went that route. If you can save a good bit, it could be worth it since they all basically crimp the darn plastic ends on the radiator! SMH...

Question, I'm pretty certain mine is leaking as well on the passenger side. Did you have a head gasket issue later or at the same time?
@ThriftyToolShed
@ThriftyToolShed Жыл бұрын
I was concerned about possible head gasket issues, but none at this time. We don't drive this vehicle as much any more, it's more of a back-up 3rd vehicle in the yard. So far it's not had any head gasket issues,but it is at the age that it could easily be an issue.

Is it true that it's a race or sports car please. And does the engine make a loud , heavy sound when it starts and is about stopping.
@ThriftyToolShed
@ThriftyToolShed 2 жыл бұрын
It's an SUV not a race car or sports car for sure! I don't have any idea what modification could have been made on yours but the H6 Boxer engine is indeed strong. As far as the loud sound other than a little starter and flywheel clank at times it is not a loud sound when starting on ours.
