I realized pretty quickly that I wasn’t reliving my old STi days when I climbed in my GT last year, but I’m nearly 50, so who cares? The car is fun and handles really well.

Call me crazy but this gen WRX looks better than the last. The rear bumper is still a mess and the fender arches are tacky but this new generation has a meaner stance.

Hi, from Japan!! POV let us know how you move steering and how you move your eyes while driving. So, it also becomes a good driving lesson for me, too. Yes, I think the car is great. However, I believe Subaru would make WRX STI manual transmission one for us sports car enthusiasts someday. I’m looking forward to getting the review from you.

Very good all-rounder sounds like the best summary. All-season, all-in-one, dad car.

8:52 yes and no-the markup on those cars has been pretty insane across the board (55k for a Golf R, GR Corolla, or CTR is not unusual whatsoever). Subaru hasn’t seemed to mark up the WRX at all, which is pretty cool. Like every WRX ever, the highest trim is not the way to go. When it’s a 32-35k car though? That’s when the value proposition gets pretty solid. It’s not a perfect car, but I think people are finally seeing that it’s way better, as you say, than we were lead to believe.

I like Subarus. I've owned two Imprezas, and my wife has an Outback. Although this new WRX does look better in person than on video, I still don't like the plastic cladding. However, I still would choose this over its competitors; I don't like any of the ones you mentioned.

Is the “CVT” the same on the lower trim WRX? Meaning the same SPT?

Yes, though it's a $1,850 - $2,250 option based on the trim.

For casual Canyon cruising it seemed “ok” but I would be curious to see how it does on an autocross course lol.

I have the '16 & can tell you, it's really fun cornering on any surface, but there's not nearly enough power to even bother trying an autocross. Turn off TCS all the way & hit a snow-covered street or gravel road, that's where this incredible AWD system shines.

We were the first dual- host review channel on KZfaq. Our original channel /EverydayDriver continues with our big comparisons and adventures. This is our second channel, and we do dual hosted reviews of single cars and will continue. We also post POVs of many of the cars we review, but like this one - those are single host. Lots more of everything on the way. Thanks for watching!

holy cow. even with the active dampers on the GT version that suspension seems suuuuper stiff. I bet it would be even worse in the manual without that feature. y'all definitely got to get a manual on your channel. i'm cross shopping the brz & wrx as they're virtually the same price in my area (brz limited vs wrx premium). That's a comparison I'd love to see on your channel because I'm sure there are tons of people like for whom the "if you need space get the wrx, if you want fun get the brz" TL;DR seems a bit reductive and not at all very helpful.
@Mark-rt6fy
@Mark-rt6fy Жыл бұрын
The wrx is much heavier than the brz, if you care about driving at all you will feel it. Non-sti wrx doesnt give you DCCD and the awd is viscous coupling, same thing on a 20k impreza. Those together with the cabin space difference, I believe, is enough for you to pick your poison

They are adaptive dampers, not active ones. So you can choose the settings but they arent always reacting. I assume todd was on the stiff setting for this drive

I wonder what a an electric WRX would be like? Not lighter we know that. If Subaru refuse to put meaningful power into a car meant to even nod in the direction of WRC, maybe they can be tricked into it. A KIA EV6 drivetrain in a WRX would almost make one forgive the '23 model's appearance.

Always liked this car but this version is ugly ugly ugly to this day I still have not seen one on the road and really a CVT they couldn't come up with a DC tranny seems they were more concerned with cost and decided on the rubber band tranny. That's two reasons why you won't see any on the road.

I Honestly don't know why this car exist, why buy this car with this transmission. I you want an auto awd car there are so many better options especially if you consider the used market

The FA CVTs sold surprisingly okay. People like autos, and while this would never be my choice, I understand why they made it. CVTs suck, but the experiment to make one as good as possible is… interesting I guess? No question, would have been cooler if they went with a DCT or something. But Subaru’s a weirdly small company and they worked with what they had, and at least they put the effort in instead of just slapping some untuned garbage in there. Of course there are used AWD options. So? People buy new because they want newer tech, a warranty, starting from 0 etc.

I have a '16 WRX with CVT. It was meant to be a city car & the paddle shifting is so much better (IMO) than the archaic clutch+shift, which is just an annoyance. Plus, you've never known misery 'til you've driven the 6sp WRX. Tedious, clunky, super long throws. The short-throw option on the STi was a great feature, but unless you're in the EU & you're trying to urge a tiny Nissan Micra to give up its 80hp, there's no reason to be pumping on a clutch like some teenager. All that said, yes, the CVT is awful. That big second lag before the drivetrain even responds to your urgency is like a condom over a condom. Turn off the TCS completely & hit a dirt/gravel or snow-filled road though, and you're having fun! Paddle shifting lets you access the red line all you want, it's better than you think. However, launches suck & they shouldn't have to. Yes, you can do a wee brake-stand & count your transmission's warranty backwards, but the WRX isn't anyone's perfect car - it's something you settle for, be it for financial reasons or a dreary market. It's time for a trade-in now & there's absolutely no chance in hell I'd ever get the '23 WRX in any trim level. That they want $3k more for this hideous, tacky antique just shows us how bad it can get when it's a seller's market. The WRX is punchy, but it's not fast. The aging execs at Subaru seem to think 270hp is a big deal. What the WRX has is an incredible AWD system & the best handling of any car short of $65k. The WRX is fast for those domesticated slobs with the "aw shucks I just need a car that gets me from A to B" mentality. Those who've lost the urge to do anything exciting. Nobody - and I mean, N O B O D Y likes the look of the new WRX. It's beyond tacky. It's disgraceful. I'm not exaggerating one bit here - whoever did this to the new WRX needs to be fired on the damn spot. No reference, just go away & don't ever come back. Unless there's a factory cranking out mullet-head pot dealers with pending domestic battery charges & $50k laying around, who are they selling these to? 270hp, for crying out loud, stop this ridiculous charade. The WRC cars were $1m supercars that weigh nothing. These things are Imprezas on steroids. And the "dragging grandpa kicking and screaming into the future" dashboards? You plopped a gorgeous steering wheel (which will peel & flake before its 5th birthday) into a rental car. The digital display (Android Auto extra!) is haunted with some of the most senseless software since Windows Vista. I'm actually impressed, you have to be good at software development to make a UI so bad. So what does a AWD fanatic upgrade to, if not for the WRX? Golf R? It's much prettier, it's faster, far more comfortable, but the handling is gawd-awful, the "3 second pause before anything" DST transmission makes a CVT feel like a RallyCross car, and to call it AWD is insulting to the technology. Plus, you've got the VW "burn it before the warranty expires" reliability issues, not to mention the $20k more you'd spend on one, plus the wait. Want anything but white paint? That'll be $1200, please! Toyota Corolla GR? A car as reliable as Toyota, making a 3 cylinder give out 300hp? Hats off to them for embarrassing Subaru (it's about f'ing time) for their sub-300hp milquetoast offerings, but clutch+shift is for teenagers & morons. Charge $50k+ for a 3 cylinder car don't slap on a Yaris interior & tell me it's worth it. I'd still like to drive it though, since I appreciate their approach of making cars for people with blood in their veins. 100hp/cylinder should've been the standard for decades, but limp hipsters were doing just fine with their 130hp Civics, weren't they...ugh. You can't have power + AWD + reliability + an adult transmission in any car until you move up to Audi, which is priced too close to the EV market for me to deny EVs. Audi make cars that Subaru should. Not talking just the design or even the luxuries, but the overall "power, AWD, reliability" thing. Even the lowly R3 kicks the snot out of the entire Subaru lineup. The KIA Ev6 GT has lots of power, but hey if you want to wait 2yrs for it, be my guest. Plus, when you have a car maker's website selling you pain touch-up pens as add-ons, on the same main page you're selecting which $65k+ model to buy, you're not dealing with a well thought out product. If you've looked inside one, you'll see what I mean. Yes, 585hp is INCREDIBLE, but let's face it, it's a huge battery with wheels. The fact that it looks like a 1990 Sentra on the inside tells you someone was rushing this out the door. You've got no engine or transmission to worry about now, Kia, how about your R&D give the eejits who drive Dodge 300's the night off & let people with eyesight design your interiors for a bit? Tesla, other than their appearance, are fantastic. By far, the leaders. Great offerings, like the Genesis GV60, are churning out great power & MUCH nicer interiors, so for those who despise Elon as much as I do, change is gonna come. Prob there is, if you want a GV60, you have to wait over a year. I can buy a new Tesla 3 or Y & have it delivered next week.
