I happen to have 3 versions of WRX / STi turbochargers to compare.
VF28 from Ver 5 Sti
VF34 JDM only Sti 2001+
TD05-20G Aftermarket
Turbo Comparison VF23 VF22 VF30 VF48

Quick question. I just got the same turbo. And for the coolant return line. Did you loop it up and around the turbo? I'm having clearance issues of making the line fit under the turbo.

Yeah, I had the water return kinda loop around the back & had heat sleeve on the hose.

Iv got a vf35 on my 02 sti and I’m getting a bit of blue smoke occasionally so I’m thinking of upgrading it , any suggestions?

Is it 2L or 2.5L? Depends on what you want to do. For daily, but still quick VF34 is good for either. If you have the supporting mods (bigger fuel system, Ecu etc) a Blouch Dominator XTR 1.5 7cm is a solid choice. There are other choices like Garrett 2860 or TD05-20G. But the thing with turbos is get the most modern one you can afford. If I use my 1JZ as an example, it has a GT3076 (10 year old tech). It’s 525hp max. A newer version of that is the G30-770. It’s smaller compressor so spools faster, but more efficient design etc allows it to be 700Hp max. Does that help?

Nice video, from my understanding: vf28 spools slightly faster than vf34, vf34 slight extra top end, both ball bearing 'roller bearing' VF34/vf28 very close anyway, vf34 has more efficient compressor housing/wheel i believe? (in your video its those curved blades) anyway i bought a vf28 at a bargain for $400, the owner 'upgraded to a vf34' he took some stupid advice from the internet, rather than looking at it objectively. Anyhow, he got a gain of 6whp and said he wasn't impressed at all, he didn't do work himself so charged labour and dyno tune, over $1750, excluding turbo cost. I found vf28 is good for around 17 - 17.5 PSI, then its efficiency drops off (probably in peak of its curve for a 2000cc engine) I only remember so well as vf28 was my first ever turbo upgrade, my first ever tune i did myself, and i put it back on my first ever engine rebuild i did.

So I reckon, while the peak HP might only be 6HP at full boost, the power you have at 4500-5500rpm on a VF34 might be slightly more than the VF28. I’m not sure as I didn’t have full control over the boost with the old HKS boost controller. I can definitely say that a lot of it comes down to how well the boost control is setup, because in my JZX90 which I meticulously tuned & then setup closed loop using it’s link Ecu. The difference va open loop boost control is massive. Essentially it’ll do whatever it can to make the boost target you give it, vs open loop, it’ll produce whatever boost is the result of the duty cycle you give the solenoid. I just got a HKS EVC 6 (vs the old V) & I can use a PC to graph/ log/ test & tune the boost control to get the best results. The boost table my tuner did wasnt the best vs the one I ended up with by tuning it myself on the JZX. I found more areas to add duty cycle without it overboosting.

Being more efficient, you should make more power at a lower boost level & also lower IAT. That’s what say a G series garret vs an older GT turbo will do.

@@Fine_Performance a lot of variables. I've tuned boost to come on Early by leaving waste gate shut longer. But turbo spools too fast and you hit that transition rich zone too easily and guzzle fuel lol 😂

So much talk about the VFs when in reality it's a downgrade from the Td05H..... Remember this is a MAXspeeding 20G which is the "heaviest" Td05H you can find around.... still only 500 rpm delay in spool. Another form of Td05H would be very close in spool and still make more power, even a 16G.

@@user-vw1vf5cw7d yeah I found that exactly. I reckon it’s slower to spool because the TD turbo I had was cheap & probably had a heavy compressor wheel. My 95 car had a TD05 & I swear is had more power than the VF23/28’s that I’ve tried. They’re roller bearing which I don’t think is comparable to a ball bearing setup. But yeah, VF34 is basically a TD05-16G but less peak HP rating.

The vf34 had 11 blades, td05 12. What did you think of the 34, I’m about to replace my vf23 on my sti type r.

Yeah it’s good. Very slightly slower spool than VF23/28 but it holds boost better up the top end. None of the VF turbos sound good when they initially dose from high boost (with no BOV). They make a very long tzoooooo sort of a sound. As low boost they make the chopping sound. Whereas the Garrett & TD turbos go tzoo tzoo tzoo tzooooo all the time. I’ve got a Blouch dominator 1.5 7cm on my blue car engine one building. I think that’s equivalent to a GT3071 Garrett. Will be interesting to see how the spool is vs the smaller VF turbo.
