Actually, Thomas, the XV will detect that the car in front has moved if you don't react yourself. It will do this even if you are not in adaptive cruise mode. In your test drive, you just started the car again before this would happen. You can also use the resume button on the steering wheel to start the car again if you like.

Some comments from a 2018 Crosstrek Limited owner in the US... my previous car was a Mazda 3 5 door. Great little car but when I went to fill up the wiper fluid reservoir, I always had leftover fluid in the container. I suspect the standard container in the rest of the world is slightly smaller but over here, wiper fluid is sold in containers that are 1 US gallon (which is about 3.79 liters). The Crosstrek reservoir is slightly bigger than that. Small thing but it's nice not to always have a mostly empty container of washer fluid rattling around in the back seat (also, it has a warning indicator that tells you when the reservoir is low... nice touch if you live in a climate with lots of salt on the roads... no washer fluid means you can't see a damn thing). • Eyesight... I love it. I spend a lot of time commuting in to Boston, MA and the Eyesight and adaptive cruise control makes that commute so much less stressful. • Love the keyless entry. If anyone is curious, it works with mittens on. No more taking my mittens off when it's -20ºF to fumble for a FOB. I do wish the FOB was a little more slender, it takes up a bit more pocket real-estate than I'd like. • The backup camera is awesome, although if you're not used to using one and you're backing up (this is my first car with a backup camera)... objects in camera are MUCH closer than they appear. It does give an audible and visual warning that you're getting closer, but the first time I used it, I didn't realize what the scale was. I'm happy to say that umm... the reverse brake assist on the Limited works... really well! • User interface on the entertainment system. I'm an ex-software engineer so these are things I get anal about. It's generally great. A friend of mine has an older Crosstrek. I spent nearly 35 minutes trying to pair my iPhone to her car before I gave up. It was beyond terrible. Subaru got the message. They made it so easy to pair via bluetooth that you will figure out how to do it even if you're not trying to figure out how to do it. Very straight forward. It remembers audio levels for the GPS (if using Apple Maps through Car Play), your phone calls, and your audio. If you're using an iPhone I recommend connecting via USB. It's much more responsive, and you gain all the benefits of the Car Play interface (including navigation so you don't have to spend the extra $1000 on the navigation system). • LED steering responsive headlights - I think this is only on the Limited... but the best headlights I've ever had in a car. Complaints I've heard that I don't agree with... another reviewer mentioned not being able to see the screen on the center console easy because of the angle. He also mentioned it reflecting the sun in his eyes. I've not had this problem myself. Always plenty of contrast on the screen for me. He also mentioned that the sun visors don't provide enough coverage. I don't have any beef with them. They're certainly better than my 2007 Mazda 3 was. Things that could use improving... • The glove box, and the center compartment are TINY. Usually I keep the user manual in my car... I had to remove it from the Crosstrek because the glove box is so small, with the manual in there, there's isn't much space for anything else. • In the trunk, they really need to provide some space to store some jumper cables. With every other car I've owned, there's been enough slop in the spare tire storage space where I could fit some jumpers in there. • The engine. It's barely adequate. I spend a lot of time in the White Mountains which tend to be infested with slow-driving tourist morons (aka "tourons"... driving 25 MPH under the speed limit and sometimes literally stopping on interstate highways to get out and take photos) during certain times of the year. This means a lot of overtaking whilst going uphill. The car could use more power. My suggestion would be a 1.5 liter turbo-charged engine (similar to an option Toyota made available for the RAV4). That would probably get you in the 175 to 185 HP region which is really what this vehicle needs. You'd still get great fuel economy, with enough power to overtake. • Implementation of Apple Car Play - Sometimes my phone just refuses to connect (via USB). I've tried multiple cables, and multiple sequences of connecting. Ultimately this is probably all of Apple's fault. Also... I bought a $26,500 accessory for my iPhone, you'd think it would come with a cable. ;) :D :P • Trunk space - I think it actually has a little *less* space than my 2007 Mazda 3 5 door. The occasions on which I have people in the back seat of my car are only a few times a year. I'd rather there be a few inches more trunk space, at the expense of back seat leg room (but perhaps I'm in the minority on that). • The fuel efficiency display. This is probably the biggest failure of this vehicle. It is just magnificently wrong. If my actual fuel economy is 29.5 MPG, the display will be reading close to 35 MPG. It's usually a full 4 to 5 MPG optimistic. My Mazda was usually within 1 MPG. When the low fuel indicator goes off, the car really means business. The remaining distance indicator might say you have 40 MPG left. You don't! I had the warning indicator go off about 12 miles from my regular gas station (and this was 100% highway miles). The remaining distance indicator was showing me 40 miles. Well, when I pulled up to the pump an filled the tank, it took 15.75 gallons. The tank is 15.8 gallons. I got lucky. If the low fuel indicator goes off, I'd say you have less than 10 miles to get to fuel station. Overall I'm quite happy with it. I'm hoping to get at least 300,000 miles out of it. One final random comment, I do mostly highway driving. I'd say 35% to 40% of that driving is done with a Thule cargo box mounted to the roof. I've filled up 14 times so far. The best fuel economy I've gotten (all highway) was 31 MPG. The average since late January/early February has been 28.3 MPG (mostly highway). Average fuel-up cost is $32.51. This is consistent with what other CVT owners report via the Fuelly app. I expect the fuel economy to go up by 1 to 2 MPG in the next month when we transition from the craptacular winter ethanol crippled fuel mixture, to the better summer mix which results in better fuel economy.

Thanks for putting together the review. Good job on covering the Eyesight. When I was initially shopping for my Crosstrek, I couldn't find too many videos that specifically covered the Eyesight in the 2018 Crosstrek. One thing worth noting (not sure if this is different for the Euro model) is that the US Crosstrek does not have an electronic parking brake (it's mechanical). As such, when the vehicle comes to a stop under adaptive cruise control, it will sound a warning bong 3 times, and then you have to put your foot on the brake. To continue, you have flick the rocker switch on the right side of the steering wheel up (or, during the 3 bong warning period, if you tap the throttle, the cruise will re-engage). Also... jealous... we don't get the heated steering wheel over here. Would have been nice this winter as we had several extended periods where the night temps were between -20ºF and -10ºF. We do (on the Limited at least) get the heated side mirrors, and heated windshield wipers.

It sounds like it would be pretty easy to live with day-to-day. Some cars are over complex these days. I think the simplicity of this is preferable. The adaptive cruise control looks much better than my VW which is really jerky!

I bought it month ago. Same color but mid specs with textile seat. So Thomas should be proud of me :-) (blue and textile). Sadly because I choose this version I lost heating steering whell so belowed by Thomas. I could add something about cruise control. There are 4 step adjustment. From eco where car accelerate vely slow to dynamic where car try to follow all trafic change rapidly. So realy capable system. Also Eye Sight is best in opiniom of Euro NCAP for active safety system. During test there was not show that after stop on for example on trafic light when car on front of you will move and you not then sound and visual warning is appearing. I drive a lot and maybe I getting older (for sure :-) ) but this car set me to drive calm and relaxed way. I don't feel it in other cars which I also drive during bussines trip. Mileage: When you drive about 90km/h on local roads with some vilages with speed limit 50km/h then you can score 6.0 l/100km. But when car is cold and you drive in city for short distance then result is about 10 l/100km. 10 seconds to 100km/h is maybe not best figure but you have it also on wet road because AWD.

I'm thinking of getting one, or a Forester, but I'm just worried about the Subaru reliability. As of lately I haven't found too many encouraging reviews 🤔 so I'm confused what to do now? Very interesting review, more in-depth of the cruise and auto brake features - so interesting to see this, not just on the motorway this time, thank you ! it's a feature we are all interested (or nervous? ) in having on our next cars, so seeing it in action in traffic and coming off the motorway is really informative and helpful for future purchase decision making - I can find no reviews of decent real world testing of these features, just set up or just hands off the wheel for a few moments reviews, which is little help in reality - keep up the good work and please show autonomous features in real world action.

Jono M The adaptive cruise control (you also have the option of using it as a conventional cruise control) and all the other driver assist features that a Subaru XV has are just that - they are there to assist, not replace, the driver. You still have the responsibility to be in control of your car. I would also argue that using adaptive cruise control when on suburban/city streets is not a good idea because, as good as it is, it cannot predict or make judgement decisions of other drivers and does not have the reflex reaction of a person. You still need to be alert.

Exactly, that's why I would rather see an experienced tester showing the capability fully, rather than find out for myself after parting with my hard earned £££ - Having had a Mercedes GL 2015 which was terrifyingly poor - I ran a Tesla for a while and found the system excellent, so the more we can see full "warts and all" tests online the better for vehicle selection - a test drive with a salesman, will never show the poor aspects of these fledgling systems, so this channel can show these vital features, before someone gets in a new car expecting all the salesman said to be factual, which from first hand experience, they are not.

Just traded in my 2015 BMW 428i Xdrive for a 2019 Crosstrek Limited. I keep reading about inadequate power but I find it acceptable but certainly not break neck. The car is comfy and loaded with driver aids and a fantastic sound system. Everything is neat in appearance and for the most part user friendly. Compared to others in the Subaru lineup the overall size is nice considering that SUVs have become huge for what they are. I find the cvt to be responsive enough and capable of pulling the vehicle through some reasonably hilly, rough roads. I do have to question the feeling of a shift point at times, not too unlike an automatic transmission. Overall I’m impressed with the entire package but time will tell if it lives up to its heritage.

Really good review. Enjoyed it. Subaru and Mazda are two of the under rated Japanese cars in Europe and definitely punch above their weight and I love both their cars.
@sic22l
@sic22l 6 жыл бұрын
They're overrated by their PR departments. Especially Subaru. In most EU countries Subarus are stupidly expensive, they're closer to premium brands, not other popular cars. It also applies to scheduled maintenance which costs 2-3 times more than in popular European brands. Service costs for the XV are similar to Mercedes C200. Not to mention old looking interiors, slow and thirsty drivetrains (n/a engines, CVTs). CVT lasts for about 150k km. Mazdas are not as overpriced, but they're also pretty expensive to maintain, especially considering mediocre reliability. Brakes don't last long, Skyactiv engines can't keep with the high compression (cylinder burn-ins) and more importantly - rust. Europe is pretty cold continent, there's quite a lot of solt on the roads every year and because of that Mazdas start to rust when they're about 2-3 years old. That's pathetic. Not to mention that those engines are pretty mediocre - very loud, not very torqy or economical. CX-5 2.0 gets destroyed by Tiguan 1.4 TSI, it's slower, louder and uses more fuel. One more thing - financing. Lease rates for Asian cars are not very attractive.

Nothing about the all wheel drive? The additional ground clearance? Those aspects are what set Subaru apart - not an SUV, more of an estate/station wagon in the US but with real snowy/muddy road capability. Without taking those features into account, it doesn't really stand out. But with those features - it's a home-run for many mountain and snowy climate folks here in the US. Note also the top-mount, easy-change oil filter - just an indication of 'Subaru-think' that makes these cars unbeatable for so many people. -Tom
@shewh0rn
@shewh0rn 6 жыл бұрын
I live in New England and spend a lot of time in northern New Hampshire. The extra ground clearance (and minimal price difference) is what drove me to purchase the Crosstrek over the Impreza. My father took my CT for a spin during a snow storm and immediate commented that it felt more stable, and had more traction than my mother's giant land yacht, a Mercury Mountaineer. There's plenty of other great videos though that really go into a lot of depth about the superior design of the Subaru AWD system as compared to Toyota, Honda, and Volvo. When traction is limited to one wheel, all of them get get stuck. That's not to say it's an off road vehicle (it's not) but it *IS* perfect for one of Subaru's target demographics... hikers and skiers who often have to drive on unplowed roads. I would disagree in saying that it doesn't stand out though. The feature set I have on my Limited would have cost me $5000 to $7000 more if the badge said "Toyota" or "Honda" on it. I looked at some offerings from Kia and Mazda as well, they didn't even get past a web search as Subaru's Eyesight system and adaptive cruise control had both of them handily beat. Good call on the top mount STANDARD oil filter. That'll certain make oil changes go much faster. My old 2007 Mazda 3 had a cartridge filter. I had to buy an aftermarket skid plate because, if you can believe this, the hole for the oil filter on the factor skid plate didn't line up with the actual oil filter. INFURIATING!

Having impreza 2.0 exclusive. adaptive cruise: + When you are at full stop and car in front started to move you can activate adaptive cruise by click 'resume' button at steering wheel(so at traffic jams you don't need to use any padels) + Adaptive cruise works from 30 km/h(Toyota - 45km/h) which is good - when you are approaching stopped cars at traffic light, car will break very hard with collision warning beeping sound - At heavy rain switches off - Works till 180 km/h Lane keep assist: - Works from 60 km/h would be good if it was from 50km/h - doesn't keep you in the center of lane + Adaptive lights are very good with high/low beam assistant - no speed sign recognition + 5 year warranty - Parking sensors are optional on all trims(front/ back- 1000 euro) - No settings for lumbar support Fuel consumption: 9.8 l/100 with 70% highway(60...150-170 km/h) 30% city 170 km/h on cruise 13-15 l/100km Overall good car with good tech. Probably my favorite youtube motoring channel. As it happens, I have just bought the 2 liter version here in Singapore a month ago. I agree with most, if not all, of your views though there are three negatives about my car which I’d like to share: 1. Our steering wheel is on the right hand side over here (unlike yours) and the wheel is not centered to the two instrument dials. 2. The steering wheel’s grip facing the driver could either do with more padding or be less angular as fatigue on my thumb pads is very obvious with this car. I have never felt this in my 40+ years of driving. 3. At certain combinations of the driver seat and seatbelt, the seatbelt touches the seat so after prolonged use, I’m sure there will be scuff marks on the leather. It is unfortunate that these three faults should affect the most important person - me, the driver :(

Good review, except you did not pay much attention to the height and the AWD capabilities, which are one of the main selling point of this car. An off road test would have been nice to see clearance and grip. So, not a full review I'm afraid. Yet the car seems great for what the intended use is. On downsize for me is that it could have a little more truck space.

First of all I just want to thank you Thomas and your team for this lovely review. Great job and keep it up like that. About the car, 3 things just wanted to point out. 1. Car in this price not only has led headlights, but also adaptive lights, which move with the steering wheel. 2. Ground clearance is 220mm, which is higher than most SUVs or crossovers. 3. Subaru uses a permanent AWD system and not an adaptive AWD system, which most probably affects fuel consumption, that is why it gets higher figures, but it does have it advantages in bad weather conditions. Other than that, as others have commented, a great car for everything, a great package for the price. The forester should be revealed in 28 March, so we can see how that will look like. Thanks again guys :)

A good solid car, I drove one, priced about $20K for a base, here in Boston. Down side, it's about as exciting as a school lunch. Thomas, I'd love to hear what you think of the BRZ/86. Maybe Subaru could offer you one for a test? I bought a 86 last August, orange with racing stripes and that silly little wing. I love her madly. She makes an old man feel young again.

I wonder if there is tuning difference between the US and EU version. The US version has pretty direct steering and a quick ratio, 13:1, which is nearly as fast as the BRZ's steering. From personal experience, it's very good steering for a small crossover. Also, we get the manual.Yeah, kinda weird on Subaru, but I'm not complaining.

I drove it and found it rather slow. Despite having a CVT previously I really didn't like this one. The steering felt a little vague and not linear to me. The looks are very old fashioned. I'm buying a 2.5 ltr Mazda CX-30 when they come out. That was really fun to drive (the 3 which is very similar) and I much prefer the normal auto transmission. It's prettier too IMO and better equipped but not so good off road and it only has 180mm ground clearance to this ones 220. I would say that if you really need good off-road capability get this but for anything a bit less adventurous, the Mazda is my pick. Inside fuel opener is so people can't steal your fuel.

Just wondering if the injection system is still multi point or GDi (Gasoline Direct injection) or a combination of both. I still do not trust these automatics, just my fear of major issues down the track. Quite a good review. I would like to have seen your feeling of the suspension on poorer road surfaces (minor bumps to small potholes)/ Australian road conditions. Cheers
@raksh9
@raksh9 6 жыл бұрын
Having driven the current ASX and Crosstrek, I would definitely choose the Crosstrek. Handling is more comfortable and the body is less bulky. The ASX bonnet/nose is huge compared with the Crosstrek. You have a much better idea of the Crosstrek's body boundaries than the ASX, which slopes and disappears into an ambiguous space. Sure, you can get parking sensors, but that's more money.
@catc296
@catc296 6 жыл бұрын
it has direct injection, and yes you're kinda right, the CVT is an odd transmission with a rather short lifespan, but automatised transmissions are still the best choice when it comes to buying a car, you can never argue against a Direct injection + Double clutch gerabox combo.

7:14 Just ordered my 2023 model, so this may not apply to the 2024, but I had also looked at the Impreza. The deciding factor was the Crosstrek was easier ingress/egress. I found the CVT is quite unpleasant, more annoying than the dreadful six-speed auto in the Silverado company truck I drive. If you're looking for a manual you may be out of luck. Check with your dealer. You might still be able to get it.

The 2.0 petrol in the US has been called MANY times dangerously slow, I cannot imagine what the 1.6 is like in this full-time AWD car. Also I had to fast forward to the Thomas Driving Lounge :P . I do like the CVT, especially around the city and in traffic, you don't have to worry AT ALL what gear you are in.
@shewh0rn
@shewh0rn 6 жыл бұрын
My eyes just about popped out when I heard it's available in a 1.6 elsewhere (the 1.6 isn't even offered in the US (to my knowledge... the only other option is a hybrid)), although consider this: On average I pay about $2.56 per gallon. In Frankfurt Germany, the equivalent cost per gallon is $5.57. Suddenly, a 1.6 liter engine becomes a compelling argument. We're complacent about engine power in the US because fuel is so cheap here.

I wish Subaru could do another body style like Mercedes GLC Coupe for Crosstrek/XV. If you have some channel with Subaru, maybe tell them to do that. Impreza has 2 body styles. So should Crosstrek/XV. Vertical space in the back is useless because if you put some high luggage there you don't see what's behind your vehicle.

Funny how the US gets a manual transmission, while others only get the CVT. I've found the manual 2.0L version gets great fuel economy for a CUV, mid-low 20s around town and an amazing 45+ in real-world driving. That's around 5.2L/100, I guess.

With the CVT, in the extra urban cycle (almost no city traffic, no high speed highways) 8l/100km or 29mpg is absolute minimum. In some more mixed driving without trashing the car 9-10l/100km (26-23mpg) is more realistic. In the mixed cycle. And like Thomas said - about 11 in the city (21 mpg). That's more than Tiguan 1.4 TSI which is also faster and more responsive.

Nice to have a real world view of the car as it is more likely to be used by us as a second car in town traffic for the school and shopping run. Sounds like it will meet all the criteria for that and be comfortable at the Same time. Only down side as I see it is the fuel consumption.. Thanks again for a great review. Jimmy

Hi Thomas, thanks for another informative review. I admire your in-depth, unhurried approach to car reviews :-) I currently own a 2004, 3 door RAV 4 that I have owned from new. I love the relative simplicity and reliability of this car. I've just done 150,000 miles in it, and am considering the XV as a replacement. I like the "old school" approach of Subaru, as you yourself put it. This XV is compact, like my current RAV 4. I need to drive safely in snow (on tarmac) for a few weeks each year. I mainly drive around town with some motorway driving but rarely exceed 75 mph. Would you recommend the XV as a good long term purchase and suitable replacement for my RAV 4 please? Researching new cars after such a long time I feel rather lost in a sea of technology! Any advice would be gratefully received...
