I spend a week with the 2023 Dodge Hornet GT to see what it's like to live with. Unfortunately, after a week of driving there were several things that annoyed me about it. But, if optioned properly and assuming some issues are early production teething issues, it can still be a solid alternative to what I think is the best pick currently in the 250+ hp subcompact crossover niche, the Mazda CX-30 Turbo. What do you think about the 2023 Hornet? Thanks to Dodge for providing this vehicle to review.

Would you be able to take the model and get it the software updates for the things you mentioned and see if you have the same gripes? Genuine curiousity as i know when the tech doesnt work it can make or break a ride - but the ones i am seeing drive around have none of the tech problems you mentioned.... granted, they mention different issues (such as what happens when you disconnect the battery for modifications) but nothing to what you did. Have you done a longer review of the phev with its 6spd vs 9 to see if the transmission jumps are more comfort orientated?

The sensor braking issue is very common in Alfa's. If it gets moisture inside the shield you can see the sensor won't work and you get that. Recently had that on my Giulia for the first time and took a good 30 min after the rain stopped for it to dry and come back, light rain doesn't bother it just really heavy. After seeing a couple of them in person and the Tonale, I really do like the looks of them (not that color though). Certainly feel this vehicle would fall into the "don't buy first year of a car" category that I tend to follow. Thanks for the info and honest review.

It looks cool, but I tend to agree with most of the comments here. This is basically a Dart reborn as an SUV, and it's trying very hard to not be as cheap as it is lol. And I don't mean price. I think this transition is gonna be hard for Dodge. Even though the Journey did well, the Dodge brand has become synonymous with big power and muscle. It's going to be difficult to keep marketing themselves as that in this age of turbo engines and electrification. I think they're trying to figure out what to become, and the Hornet is the result of trying to grasp to the muscle car nameplate, but also cater to the new age of car buyers. It's been so weird seeing the Hornet marketed alongside it's V8 brethren. Perhaps they could let Jeep handle the SUVs, and Dodge can stay doing crazy things. But oh well, only time will tell. I feel like you were being nice on this one Matt haha. Hopefully this car won't suffer the fate of the Dart. My ex still has her 2015 Dart, but it's nearing the end of it's time.
@davidturgeon2087
@davidturgeon2087 Жыл бұрын
I don't understand the comparison to the Dart. The Hornet is a re-badged Alfa Romeo Tonale, not a Dodge at all, really. Alfa tends to keep its models around for years, so I expect the Hornet will also be around for years. Turbo engines and compact crossovers have been around for many years; Dodge is just catching up to everyone else with the Hornet.

I don't know why the reviewer compares the Hornet to the Mazda CX30, since the Hornet is a compact crossover and the CX30 is a subcompact. To my mind, the proper comparison would be to the CX50, which is Mazda's compact crossover. While the Hornet is on the small side for a compact, the lack of rear seat space and luggage space in the CX30 will rule it out as a competitor for the Hornet with many if not most buyers.
@MattMaranMotoring
@MattMaranMotoring Жыл бұрын
The Hornet is classified as a subcompact, that's how Dodge's marketing department is able to claim that it's the highest horsepower in its class. Once you go up to the compact class the RAV4 Prime has 34 more hp. And Mazda still makes the CX-5 which is closer in size to the Hornet if you're discussing a Mazda from the next class up, and it too gets the 2.5 Turbo setup.
@davidturgeon2087
@davidturgeon2087 Жыл бұрын
@@MattMaranMotoring No, the Hornet is a compact crossover, like the CX-5 and the CX-50, not a sub-compact like the CX-30. As you know, the CX-50 is the eventual replacement vehicle for the CX-5. Dodge claims the highest horsepower in the compact class, not the sub-compact, for under $30,000. We're talking ICE vehicles here, not PHEV vehicles like the RAV-4 Prime. If you want to compare the RAV-4 Prime to a Hornet, you need to compare it to the R/T not the GT, and you'll find the R/T tops the Prime. The proper comparison for the car you are testing is a Mazda CX-5 Turbo or a CX-50, not a sub-compact CX-30.

Let me talk to ya!! Everyone is entitled to their opinion 100% but I don’t understand why people aren’t even giving this car a chance. I’ve worked for Chrysler in sales now for 3 years and there’s a lot of excitement about the Hornet. Firstly, people need to understand that 2023 is the FIRST model year and as we know with any brand and the first model year of any car that the vehicle will have issues, that is just the way it is. I sold the first Hornet that came into my dealership and I followed up with the customer a month later to see how things were going. She told me she loves it and gets so many compliments on the vehicle. Also I have personal connections within the corporate side of Stellantis and they all are very excited for the future or this vehicle! I personally ordered a 2024 model for myself and can not wait!! The difference between the Hornet and the Dart 10 years ago is the dart was rushed to production and the transmission options were not the best but I still love the dart. Morale of the story is don’t write off a vehicle before it has a chance to succeed.

The enthusiasm is justified. I test drove a Hornet GT and told the salesman it drove so well that it shocked me. It also looks very good. If Stellantis fixes the 1st year gremlins and sticks with the Hornet, it has potential to catch on with people looking for a somewhat premium compact SUV with a little more room, better performance and better looks than others in this segment. The base GT does offer the best value. With the Cold Weather package, I find it very well equipped and well priced. With the ski pass-through and ground clearance, it would be a great ski trip vehicle for those of us who live in a colder climate.

There’s many times where I’d prefer a cloth seat as well, but when comparing the “stuff per dollar” value, leather is usually perceived as being the upgrade and therefore if two vehicles are roughly the same price and one has it while the other doesn’t, the one without isn’t as good of a value in that context. Of course everyone has different preferences, which is why I just point out the things each one offers and let people form their own opinion.

Also I recently read that Teslas have poor driving ranges. Plus I don’t like those low priced Teslas look on their front bumper, it’s like there’s been a dent or that something was supposed to be put there but wasn’t. Also cars like Hybrids, Ford Pickups and Jeep Grand Cherokee I’ve read are high targets for car thieves and carjackers, people who are on the rise in crime.

I own one and I love it! It handles and rides like an Alfa Romeo because that’s what it is! The Alcantera seats are comfortable and it is a haul ass mid sized SUV! I’ve had it for 2 months and it’s a great vehicle and a pleasure to drive!

As a Chrysler salesman… i wish I could be excited about our products… but I know this company is junk. My dealership is a fun team though and it’s a paycheck

@davidturgeon2087 I meant a work supplied one, and yeah it's an alfa...but is it good? Mehh

@@dillonhughes1417 Well, I guess that all depends on how you define "good". No matter what the type of vehicle, Alfa always seems to design it to drive as much as possible like a sports car, and the Hornet is no exception. Consequently, the Hornet is not to everyone's taste, as we can see from the above video. A compact crossover with available Brembo brakes and adjustable dampers makes for a niche vehicle, not one with mass market appeal. Sort of like any Dodge, I guess.

What a dumpster fire. I pray a mfg makes a successor to the Fiesta ST. We need another cheap manual hot hatch for the masses!

Except the Hornet isn't a hatch back. It does rather drive like a hot hatch, though!
