Bassem El-Khodor, PhD, discusses magnesium, "the forgotten nutrient," and why it's so important. He goes through the reasoning behind the deficiency, the different types of deficiencies, and how this links to our biochemical processes. Dr. El-Khodor also addresses ways to test for low magnesium and steps to reverse the deficiency.

I was having heart palpitations for weeks. I had been on a “fitness health kick” so I was eating healthy whole foods, but reduced calories. I was also working out hard every day with weights, cardio and a steam room session, so sweating a lot daily. I thought I had a serious heart issue! After a little research, I started taking a magnesium supplement - my heart palpitations stopped the following day! Magnesium has a big effect on heart rhythm

Same with me. My heart palpitations and ectopic beats completely cleared up the day after taking magnesium citrate. I will say however, that as a fellow fitness enthusiast, working out hard every day is far too much for your body. Especially if you include cardio in there too. You should really only workout hard like that 4 times a week at the most. Your body just won't have any time to recover.

I've had worsening dysphagia since the age of 10. I'm 38 now and this year I couldn't swallow anything without chasing it with water or some other drink. Wow, I’ve noticed an increasingly worsening of having trouble swallowing food over the past year or so. I can’t eat without a big cup of water to help me swallow just about every bite of food. I’ve only just discovered a possible magnesium deficiency problem and have just started to take supplement. I’d be absolutely thrilled if my swallowing problem goes away. I was getting ready to make an appt for an ENT doc soon. Hopefully I won’t need to!

What I found new for me from this podcast was additional information about how to convince people that because of modern farming they might be deficient, about the usefulness of magnesium from food, about methylation and excess homocysteine, and about the fact that removing cerebral spinal fluid may cause a brain deficiency if magnesium. My niece just had a sample removed and I need to inform her. I am sure there are others that have some important information to share in he topic as well.

I am thankful for this video having been posted to my phone. It solidified my concept on the importance of Magnesium in our diet. I had suffered a lot of severe cramps in my thighs so devastating I felt one day it will trigger a heart attack therefore I put my thinking cap on about the physiology of muscle contraction, which among other dietary & micro mineral elements relies on Calcium & Magnesium. The moment I put myself on Magnesium Supplement as far back as the 80s, I was free from these severe cramps & irregular heart beats. To everyone out there, take this lecture as an important message to protect you from serious ill health. Prevention is better than cure.

I am thankful for the article on a forgotten mineral, Magnesium that I encountered reading way back in 1993. It's benefits to our body is so many that I took it seriously and started taking this supplement since 1993. I am over 70 now and never missed a day not taking it. Maybe that is very helpful bc I am in good health, not on any maintenance medication, no heart of blood pressure or sugar issues. This doctor's presentation is so much in detailed and so amazing. The fact that Magnesium helps our brains is so awesome. So many people suffers from Migraine and Depression, Alzheimer's that they take those other strong drugs and not Magnesium. I am so glad that there are groups of Functional Doctors now that educating the public through this media because America is getting sicker and sicker now. So many young and old around are obese and unhealthy because of all processed foods available. It is time that America takes control of their own health and not just depend on prescription drugs and be mindful of what we put in our mouth.

The medical industrial complex's failure to properly research and diagnose and treat diet and microbiome and sleep and vital nutritional deficiency issues (including those related to Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2 and Magnesium deficiencies as well as iatrogenic prescription medication usage) is a major reason why psychiatric iatrogenesis is a primary contributor to the third leading cause of death in the U.S. (which is iatrogenesis in general). If the U.S. spent just a fraction of the over $40 billion each year it spends just on iatrogenic psychiatric drugs alone, for properly researching the issues discussed in this and related KZfaq presentations we would probably, Lord willing, achieve an absolute revolution in medical efficacy improvement and iatrogenesis reduction. Your Biz-school degree & medical training enable you to highlight this systemic weakness in our profit-oriented medical system. Unregulated capitalism is objectively undemocratic. Rent-seeking & ever-more sophisticated ‘innovative’ customer traps are inherently unfair to govt officials & ordinary citizens alike. And regardless of the nature of the political system, unregulated capitalism leads to oligarchs, monopolies, private quasi-governmental arrangements, a crowding-out of the public square, a corruption of historically non-profit private social organizations, dominance of labor, and ultimately, slavery. As an MBA, you’re familiar with the methods by which ownership maintains control of the enterprise, including reporting controls that originated in feudal-era bureaucracies and, less-specifically, all the common law that originated in those times clothed in terms like the master-servant relation, the enforceable obligations of obedience embedded in contracts, and the web of laws & customs that favored property rights over individual welfare. (The rich & poor alike are prohibited from stealing bread, sleeping under bridges, and walking down the street without a plan). Before a system becomes fatally corrupt, some combination of pitchforks, opposition movements & resulting political reform can ‘save’ capitalism (like the labor movement & The New Deal). The Chinese have been struggling with capitalist concentration for a decade or more; the outcome is not entirely clear & won’t be for many years. To close out this overly-long comment, remember that when the capitalists adopted reporting controls from the bureaucrats, the bureaucrats continued to use them. So you know that, behind those stories about ‘disappeared’ people in Argentina, Chile, East Germany, etc. there was a secret police weekly report something like, “Enemies of the State identified this reporting period.” Merry Christmas, 2021, to all ! 🎄

Apart from sleep and cognitive issues, I had begun to experiences brief but alarming episodes of double vision - the scary type which goes away when one eye is closed, returns when you open it again. This all very quickly resolved once I began to take a Mg-containing mineral supplement, so that, like the comment on dysphagia below, I suspect the double vison may have been a much less common manifestation of Mg deficiency. As a large animal veterinarian, I might add that both acute and chronic deficiencies of Mg have long been well recognized in farm animals, and particularly in stressed/lactating ruminants or those from whom calves have been recently removed...Most sincere thanks again to Dr El-Khodor! RDI is really the minimum, may even be not enough. Vitamin D specs at 400-600i.u. per day, but 5000i.u. helps prevent cancer of some forms. Same goes for Iodine, 150mcg/day may suffice to prevent goiter, but insufficient to stimulate the brain and prevent cysts, breast or prostate cancers. With Magnesium, i take one teaspoon(3g?) of Magnesium bisglycinate to get only 300mg of Magnesium element. It was cited to prevent colon and pancreatic cancers.

Similar thing goes against zinc picolinate, while good absorption, it doesn't break loose the zinc into free ionic zinc that the body can use. Expensive waste, that's all. Zinc glycinate was fond to have 40% better absorption than the zinc picolinate form.

I wanted to add some thing that I don’t think people really pay attention to, you need to do research if you’re on any prescription medication or even over-the-counter medication‘s, because a lot of them deplete you of certain vitamins and minerals and people think it’s caused from something else and it can be some medication you’re on like the type two diabetic medicine makes you low in B12 I never knew that I just found that out today so I started looking at all these prescriptions the doctors give to me but I don’t take but I was in the beginning till they started making me so sick I couldn’t handle it no more and then I ended up depleted and everything almost I was actually malnutrition from GMO prescription drugs and you can’t take the synthetic potassium like they were giving me when they put me on a water pill because it’s synthetic so I started eating pistachios they taste better anyway anyway make sure if you’re on any kind of medication over-the-counter or prescription, because over-the-counter drugs at one time were prescriptions like Benadryl it was one of the first anti-anxiety medication in a sleep aid and believe me they defeat you of something so don’t get all freaked out about everything if you get a cramp in your calf it could be caused from the medicine you took

Any chance of getting a copy of those slides? I really need to study them. I've had leg cramps as long as I can remember, and high blood pressure all my life. I was hospitalized with high blood pressure as a child- but when my mother was not in the room, it went down to normal. She was my primary abuser, and it would have been nice if someone used that knowledge to take me out of that home. My father also had a violent temper and my sister was born with a serious birth defect for which she was beaten every day. A totally messed up home. I have C-PTSD, some dissociation, and bad ADD as a result. For many years they treated my blood pressure by including Potassium, which I know now only made it all worse. I also have fibromyalgia. I take the max. magnesium and supplement with it externally. But still gets cramps and spasms that are very painful. I was doing well with Now brand Magnesium Transporters, which are pills. But I was getting low on them so I went back to KAL brand fizzy magnesium, Heart Healthy Magnesium Taurate because I thought my heart was most important. But the spasms are back. Oh, and I do have IBS. Lately it's been diahrea. And decades ago I took Calcium because I can't tolerate dairy. Oh and I have great difficulty consuming leafy greens because I don't have any molars to chew with. I use a vege blend powedred supplement but it's expensive so I don't use much. it probably would help if I used more. I'm not a doctor but I've been studying my health issues for a number of years and with the information on those slides to guide me I bet I can do more. I turned 70 years recently which to me is amazing. I have a lot of chemical sensitivities and was suicidal from the pain before the got the mercury removed from my teeth- I never imagined I'd live to see the year 2000, but I did and I'm still here. Are the slides on a website somewhere? Please.

It can be reversed in the Bible God said you you plan a crop this year can plant the same crop next year but then switch and put another crop in there don't keep planting the same thing in the same plot of land and not only that he said every 7th year turn your soil over and just let it rest do not plant anything all of that can be dead but man is so greedy and so selfish so he is depleting everything out of the soil when you let the soul rest I believe the rain and the Sunshine while it's resting it's happening the soil the soil has to be rich and nourishing to benefit the plant that was planted in it so man is doing all of us a disservice by planning the same thing over and over and over again in that same plot of land which he should reverse it and plan another crop and no he has to grow something but he should switch and let her part of his land in that seventh year just to go dormant don't put nothing in it just turn it over applied over and let it rest oh yeah all of that fall all of that winter all of that summer just let it rest after harvest and don't plan it anymore until the next spring let it rest a year that's what God Said on the 7th Year let the land rest do not plant and the farmers can do that I know they need money but they don't have to turn it all over then the year that they turn it over then they plant another area and don't plant the same thing every year have two crops or two or three in other words they sure you plant one thing and you may plan it again the next year but for the third year no you plant something else that's the way that goes it's all in the word of God but most people don't like to pick it up and read it God knows best not us love you much love you all all over the earth I love you much in Christ Jesus name bless you all amen amen !!!

What are the neurological symptoms of magnesium deficiency? Acute or chronic magnesium deficiency may affect the nervous system. Acute magnesium deficiency leads to metabolic encephalopathy and alteration of neuromuscular excitability, such as deprementia and nervousness. By contrast, chronic magnesium deficiency is characterized by ------------------ Spasm. What does lack of magnesium do to the brain? Recent studies have associated Mg-deficiency with many neurological disorders, such as cerebral vasospasm, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and migraine. What are the mental symptoms of magnesium deficiency? Dietary deficiencies of magnesium, coupled with excess calcium and stress may cause many cases of other related symptoms including agitation, anxiety, irritability, confusion, asthenia, sleeplessness, headache, delirium, hallucinations and hyperexcitability, with each of these having been previously documented. Can a deficiency of magnesium cause neurological symptoms? Twitches, tremors, and muscle cramps are signs of magnesium deficiency. In worst-case scenarios, deficiency may even cause seizures or convulsions. Scientists believe these symptoms are caused by a greater flow of calcium into nerve cells, which overexcites or hyperstimulates the muscle nerves. Can low magnesium cause brain fog? Magnesium is a trace mineral that plays an important role in energy production and nerve function. Your body needs magnesium to activate various enzymes involved in converting food into energy and keeping your neurons healthy. Magnesium deficiency can lead to brain fog, impaired focus, and anxiety. Can low magnesium cause cognitive issues? Low magnesium concentration is associated with poor cognitive function. The concentration of magnesium in patients with Alzheimer's disease and mild cognitive impairment was lower than that in normal participants. How to tell if magnesium is low? Symptoms of magnesium deficiency. - Low appetite. - Nausea and vomiting. - Fatigue and weakness. - Muscle spasms or tremors. - Abnormal heart rhythms. What organs does low magnesium affect? Every organ in the body, especially the heart, muscles, and kidneys, needs the mineral magnesium. It also contributes to the makeup of teeth and bones. Magnesium is needed for many functions in the body. This includes the physical and chemical processes in the body that convert or use energy (metabolism). How long does it take to correct magnesium deficiency? Chronic magnesium deficiency is often associated with normal serum magnesium despite deficiency in cells and in bone; the response to oral supplementation is slow and may take up to 40 weeks to reach a steady state. Does coffee deplete magnesium? Coffee does not directly affect magnesium in your body. But it halts the further absorption of magnesium gradually in your intestines. The more coffee you consume, the less your magnesium absorption rate gets. But a heavy dose of coffee can lead to magnesium depletion.

Licorice(DGL) and Hydrocoloric Acid (HCl) May have helped along with fasting and changing your diet to most healthiest foods. Keep learning and going forward with a positivity mindset.

Biochemical balance of minerals is required for for proper functioning of the body systems (ie: the body employs Calcium to contract muscle tissue. Conversely, it uses Magnesium to trigger relaxation of the muscle, otherwise cramping may result) It’s the ratio of calcium to magnesium that is important to proper functioning. (Likewise, the body must maintain the proper ratio (balance) between Sodium and Potassium, else blood pressure will be adversely affected)
