I remember seeing an interview with Neil where he said Subdivisions was perhaps the most technically exhausting song in their repertoire.. because there was no hiding a bad note because of the prominence of the percussion in the song.. and how significant the lyrics were. Met him once.. far away from music and fame.. just a guy on a motorcycle with a buddy of his.. stopped at a scenic overlook near Yellowstone Park.. we shared a smile that I knew and he knew I knew.. but we talked about bikes and the mental freedom of riding, nothing about his music or ridiculous talent... He was a deep soul I think.. technically brilliant but also a significant intellect and a kind man. Been a fan since 1981..

A year later, it still hurts like hell. I can’t listen to a Rush song and not tear up, which gets tough, because I listen to them a lot. I have every studio and live album on my iPhone. When I do a random from my Rush play list, and something like The Garden, or The Pass comes on, I try hard to choke back the tears, and quickly switch to another song. Damn, I miss you, Professor. But from the bottom of my heart, thank you a thousand times.

On the one year anniversary of Neil's passing, this is difficult to watch for me and I'm sure for those who appreciated this god given talent. I remember discovering RUSH in grade 8 and they became my favorite band. Neil Peart was an extraordinary talented musician much like his bandmates. But Neil stood out for me the most not only in RUSH but as a drummer who simply had the gift to play and write lyrics! @@danshea3679 Yes indeed; as others should also do when appropriate. Adrenaline changes your perception of time. It's not uncommon for inexperienced musicians to blow though their own songs way too fast (ala Lars Ulrich in the early days). It's also why certain players can pull things off in live settings that they can't reproduce in the studio. Time seems to slow down for them, but they manage it well. You see the same phenomena with athletes in big games (particularly QB's). They start overthrowing their receivers because they get too amped up and their internal timing runs too fast. I call it "adrenaline clock" when I see it. All of this speaks even more highly of Neal, IMHO. This is my all time favorite Rush song. ;o)

One of the ways he was probably doing it is in a way pretty simple, but also very intuitive. Something that people with rhythmical ability do have but often forget while trying to push the envelope and overthink things (not talking about Peart or Colauita). I like Vinnie Colauita's quote and fully agree with it that ''Thought is the enemy of flow''. I believe Peart was really feeling the music and going with the flow and I found that when in doubt, it usually works pretty good :)

That's just crazy. That was video of a live performance over 30 years after the audio recording you are hearing, and every beat, crash and hit is spot on. No one should ever question this man's skill. What a tremendous loss to the music world. He will be missed, bur forever remembered. So, though you are seeing him perform live, the audio you are hearing is the original studio track. Amazing!

A highly intelligent and well read man along with the drumming. Go watch videos of interviews with him and see what an amazing mind he had. What a shame that he had to go thru so much pain in his life, with the tragic ending that lasted 3 years. Despite the difficulties, he perfected his craft to the point of perfection. There will never be another musician like him. Thankfully, we have the video and audio of it all to appreciate. Hard to believe it's been almost 3 years since he left us.

Neil built his parts to a song piece by piece with both a rhythmic and melodic mindset. His percussion was always dominant because he heard sound color flowing in and around the time. Sometimes, he enforced that time, other times implied it. But through it all he gave Rush a huge palette of sound colors that always enhanced the songs. And though it took years and years for them to break through, Neil was doing it from Fly By Night. My best memories of this band were way before they played the big arenas like MSG, Nassau Coliseum and Continental Arena; my fondest memories were the smaller venues of Mid-Hudson Civic Center, The Palladium and Allentown Fairgrounds. At those shows I was so close, I could see everything Neil did. Valuable lessons one and all. R.I.P. Professor.
