Awesome! My college sax teacher used to call it "woofing" when he played subtone low notes on the tenor

That's a great way to describe it!

One tip for everyone on this, start learning how to do sub tones quiet and then within an hour or two of practice you’ll be able to play them at a louder volume

Playing quiet is definitely much harder to do. Great add.

Quiet bari is lovely. Gerry Mulligan played some incredibly relaxing, moving music using a lot of lovely subtone.

BJ I'm on the market for a Bari, what's your take on the PMauriat Bari 302 gl low Bb. I'm not a pro player just starting out on the Bari, I'm not too keen on low A either. Can you give me an idea of what kind of $$$$ I can expect to dish out?

Hi Paddy - Sorry for the late reply. PMauriat would be great for a new Low Bb. If you're open to a low A model I'd suggest a W01 Bari from Yanagisawa. If you're open for a used one I'd suggest a Yanagisawa B901. I'd say you'll be north of $5K USD for something worth owning, unless you get a great deal.

@@bjbarisax01, followed your advice, I did get a bari and I found someone who did a hack job on the price of a new P. Mauriat PMB 300 UL (low A) for less than $$ grand, how about that, that's a good deal. I've had it for 10 days, had it adjusted by a local and it suits me just fine. Thanks for all the good advice, all I need now is a good teacher on a once-a-month basis. Stay sharp and amazing BJ. ( I cannot divulge the real purchase price for fear of reprisal)

What's up, with that Leo P guy, have you heard what he's doing? And what is it, torturing a reed? That is one high energy dude....
@bjbarisax013 жыл бұрын
I've never met Leo, but I'd say he's definitely got his own thing. That's super important and tough to do. I don't picture myself moving like that ; ) He uses a lot of "effects" in his playing... growling, multi-phonics, sucking/popping on the reeds... there's Miles Osland (check him out if you're not familiar) who wrote a lot of saxophone charts using effects like that a lot in his own playing.
