Are you saying these words in your head as you read them? This video discusses subvocalization, a reading habit that involves the saying of words in your head while reading. This is an old reading habit that reduces your reading speed. If you subvocalize all the words in your head while reading, then you will only read as fast as you talk. This video discusses strategies to reduce subvocalization so that you can increase your reading speed.

I am extremely confused as to how it’s even possible to not say a word in your head when you read. How in the world do you comprehend a word without saying it in your head?

Thank you so much for this! I’ve heard the counting out loud while you read method and it’s impossible for me to do. I am then not reading anything, just counting and looking at symbols. I tend to talk a lot faster than I read though. 😬 I have a lot of books I want to read but it takes me so much longer to get through them than other people. I’ve been trying different methods but the subvocalizing is a hard habit to break. This tool seems to work much better for me. I am definitely going to practice with this.

I can't read without my inner monologue. i see words as a visual representation of noises made by the human mouth. To read with out the inner voice is like trying to experience music by looking at an oscilloscope.

I think I'd be throwing all of my comprehension out the window if I tried this. I usually can't comprehend what I'm reading if I read as fast as I talk, I have to slow it down and then still catch myself reading without paying attention so I have to reread a lot of paragraphs twice, or sometimes three or four times before I actually pay attention to what was said.

A simple way to increase your reading speed by eliminating sub vocalization, is to recite a number sequence very softly like "1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4, ..." . or sing a familiar song like "Mary Had A Little Lamb". At first it seems impossible but soon you will be on your way to reading without having to hear the words in your head. Try it. Stay with it- it works. Also practice a "soft focus" kind of like staring in the air, by looking just below the print. This allows you to to see phrases rather than single words. When you use a "hard focus", it makes you stop for just a moment on each word- greatly reducing your speed and believe it or not your comprehension.

Does this mean that rather than not saying all words in your head, you only say like 50% of the words in the head and completely skip the rest of the words as if they didn't exist. So for example. The previous sentence is read in the head like "Does this mean not saying all words only say 50% words skip rest didn't exist". Is it possible to read the sentence without reading any single word in the head?
