Stephen Entwistle, our Senior Acoustic Engineer, joins us on Ask the Expert to talk about one of his big passions: Subwoofers.
And it's something he knows a thing or two about. You see, he has just spearheaded the design of our four new subwoofers!
In this episode:
00:54 - Hintsa Sandy: What's the key to making a clean, punchy and tight subwoofer?
02:31 - Brian Nielsen: Take away the presets from the Sub 6, what's it's advantage over the Sub 3 now?
05:00 - Peter Silvester: What do subs add to speakers that already have a good low-end extension?
09:48 - Tim Rangi: Where should I put my subwoofer?
13:33 - René Christensen: Why do people often believe that bigger drivers are slower than smaller ones?

Dynaudio’s Q&A videos are absolutely terrific. This one is just the latest example. My only devil’s advocate comment is that integrating subs with mains CAN prove challenging, and that a lot of experimentation over a long period of time is often required to get things right. But when you get it right, you’ll know because your stereo will be reborn.

I purchased the Dynaudio 18s 8 months ago (February 2022) to use with some bookshelf speakers in my home - and I enjoy listening to it very much. The sensitivity adjustment was the capability that I found most necessary because my amplifier outputs very low power from its pre-amp outputs. The 18s has broken in over time to where I have been able to reduce the volume by 9db in 8 months by a combination of changing the sensitivity from +6db to 0db, and reducing the volume from +8db to +5db.

I have a pair of Dali Rubicon 2s in a dedicated and acoustically treated listening room. My set up has a quility DAC and amplifier which altogether produce beautiful music and full sound. But when I switch on the two 10" subs which take care of the frequencies 60hz and below it take the experience to a whole new level. The trick is to not over do it with the level of the subs. Less is more. The subwoofers allow your main speakers to have more control over the rest of the frequencies which results in a more detailed reproduction. Great content in this video 👍🏼

VERY interesting topic and SO well presented and one that I am somewhat familiar with . . . ONE thing that wasn't mentioned is that when a LARGE bass driver is WELL designed, say for example an 18 inch driver . . . has SO much more square area than even TWO eight inch drivers working in tandem, its magnet or motor does not have to work anywhere NEAR as much to make the cone travel the distance required to produce the low bass note. Therefore it can be "as fast" SOUNDING as two "fast" eights for example. Of course a subwoofer with one or even TWO 18 inch drivers has practical limits of implementation :-) Dynaudio's Sub 6 is brilliant because it has two opposing drivers working in unison (while opposing each other inside the enclosure) to cancel out vibration and cabinet movement.

Each person hears music and sound differently and age is a big thing too. We could literally argue till the end of time and have different opinions. There is always the difference on how someone hears the sound. It makes me laugh now but I used to get very heated about my hi fi. Isn’t it strange how subs have always been accepted as powered speakers but magazines will ban you if you talk up a decent active speaker. I tried 6 different subs until I found the JORDAN ALR and it’s lovely.
@oysteinsoreide4323
@oysteinsoreide4323 4 жыл бұрын
Active speakers are are gradually getting better. But still you will always be able to get better sound out of passive speakers because you can attach an amp with much headroom to it, but the built in amps are good enough, but seldom are designed with the same headroom in mind. But there are some beautifully sounding active speakers out there. But for some people active speakers can be a good option. But they are for a different type of people too. You can't experiment with different speaker cables, and different amps. It makes a dimension go away from those people who like to experiment with their home audio system.

There are standing waves in any room. So you might have a lot of bass in one listening position, and not in others. The idea of adding several subs, are to fill out those places, so that the bass is more even, across the room. A second sub should be placed in the other end of the room, to also give more depth. The KZfaq channel audioholics, has an ongoing series about acoustic treatment and room correction, with a very famous guy, called Anthony Grimani (look him up!). He is talking about the subject, with lots of images in a slideshow. Up to now, they have made 4 videos on the subject, of over one hour each. You will be blow away, I promise! They also discuss the usage of several subwoofers.

@@dynaudio I didn't know that was possible. Would be pretty cool! But I have to say, I don't really have Dynaudio kind of money. I've had to settle with a 7.0 system, with a Denon AVR-2400H, set of floor speakers, center speaker, and 4 bookshelf speakers, from a competing Danish brand. That's kind of the budget I'm working in. It works really well for movies, but less satisfying for stereo audio listening. I don't really miss a subwoofer. I tried one on test for a few days. It sounded great, it was no boomy bass or anything. A really nice, tight bass. But I always did get fatigued pretty quick, because of the low frequencies. Like I was about to get "pops" (propper) in my ears. Maybe the sub was just positioned incorrectly? I don't know.

There’s a Japanese company called eclipse who says most speakers impulse response is delayed and skewed and that theirs is almost timed perfectly and when it hits your early hear it more naturally and easy. Is that something considered with Dynaudio speakers?

@khronscave
@khronscave 6 жыл бұрын
I'm only highly skeptical of "magical" solutions and whatnot. But if you insist on knowledge, and on the topic of "delayed and skewed" impulse response, have a read over here: www.stereo.net.au/features/the-fast-bass-experiment-are-heavy-woofers-slow TL;DR - When you apply a low-pass filter (on the woofer, or any speaker, for that matter), be it passive or active, you're effectively delaying and prolonging the impulse response. It's just simple physics. So that Japanese company runs their woofers full-range, and only high-passes the mids and/or tweeters, or..? You have to admit, it's very convenient to point out a problem in "all other speakers" that (ONLY) you (or your company / the product you're selling) just so happens to address, with a "secret sauce"-solution, wouldn't you say?
@t.j.bennett6454

KhronX they don’t pass over any frequencies. Said company has a video of what they do but it’s in Japanese. It’s not even discussion able with you as neither of us understand what they’re saying. Hence why I was asking the experts. Not for some random person to tell me it’s marketing bs and not even know the science behind it

I had a subwoofer on test to my 7.1 setup. Every time I turned on the sub, I quickly got tired in my ears, by the tight, deep waves. I just couldn't adapt to it. It was like my ears were about to get "pops" in my ears (don't know the English term). So I skipped the sub, and I don't miss it. It was a mid range Dali sub, so not some cheap crap.

@@akyhne That’s not suppose to happen. Your sub should never hurt your ears unless you’re playing above or close to 80hz. I had the issue you described when I was first setting up my speakers in my room. Moving the sub, speakers, & my couch to a different location fixed that issue for me. Adjusting the gain and the phase can help, too. It took a few hours, but eventually, I found the sweet spot for my room. now my sub sounds perfectly integrated with speakers, without hurting my ears or sounding boomy.

@@larsstecken No bother at all 🙂Using an RCA switch to connect two different sources to one subwoofer input is not a problem. The subwoofer only sees one input, the switch. You cannot connect two sources directly at the same time. You may get sound, but you risk damage to your equipment.

People who say that subs are only for movies or games, and that they destroy the music in a stereo only system are either ignorant or being purposely argumentative. No matter how good your stereo speakers are, no matter how low you think they go, they cannot do the job of properly integrated subs. When they are set up correctly you don’t hear them at all. The only time you will notice them is when you turn them off. And the you wonder what happened to the detail and soundstage. I used to think a lot like others…why do you need subs, just buy better speakers. I drive a pair of Evidence Temptations with 500W per channel (Mac) and they are simply great. But I then added a pair of Dyn Sub500s and the improvement was not subtle. I would never not have subs in my stereo system. If they can make a noticeable improvement to Temptations, then it means they are essential with almost any speaker you can imagine.

Think it comes from the equations terms of Lawplace law of Force. Force = I x L x B B stands for the magnet strength. L stands for the wire length in the coil.¨ I stands for amperage, current. Together they stands how much power and force they generate from the current. Personally I would call it LB instead. BL reminds to much of BS ;)

IMO, subs are ok for movies & games, but NOT for music! With subs, every base note sounds like the same note, and they sound muddy. All they're good for is to make the room rumble.

what is it with subs with small speakers in bigger rooms the detail that's lost the midrange that's lost your drowing out what that little speaker was designed for and that is a smaller room buy its bigger brother if you need more bass the engineer never designed the speaker so you could destroy its sound quality by adding subs .

I used to be a nonbeliever, I just added a sub to my 2.0 stereo setup, fine-tuned it and my mind is blown. It makes the speakers disappear, it adds reality, depth and presence to all your music, it's amazing, give it a try. Your speakers might state in the specs that they go down to 40 Hz, they don't, and if they do they do it poorly, you need a bigger driver to perform accurately at that depth. A fine-tuned sub should be 'invisible', you shouldn't be able to point where the bass comes from, it should blend perfectly with your main speakers.
