- HEDD Audio & Acoustics Insider - What is it about? -
Welcome to this video series in collaboration with HEDD Audio! In this series I'm going deep into different aspects of studio speakers and subwoofers to show you how they work, how to use them in your home studio, and the pros and cons of different types of speaker designs. I'll be using acoustic measurements with Room EQ Wizard (REW) and Rational Acoustics SMAART, and I'll talk to experts, specialist and speaker designers. To do that I am partnering with HEDD Audio, which gives me the opportunity to go into a depth and breadth that I wouldn't be able to do on my own. I use HEDD Type20 MK2 speakers every day myself in my own studio and I couldn't be happier with how they perform. Otherwise I wouldn't have agreed to this partnership. I'm very excited to go on this deep dive with you and to show you how you can get the most out of your room and speakers.

In my media room, I have a big built in wooden rack that goes across the width of the room. Speakers have to go on that rack and I can’t put speakers on stands. It’s a complete PITA. I put each of the front three speakers on iso pucks so they don’t make the big rack vibrate so much. It’s been a complete game changer and has been hugely beneficial. Almost as good as stands but not quite. For this application, isopucks are very valuable. Your recommendation of just putting speakers on stands if possible still stands. One day I hope to get rid of the rack and use stands. Until then, isopucks are great.

About phase matching, I had a Dynaudio 18S sub for a week, and it has a dsp option to set speaker and sub distance. It was really useful, and regardless of the lost energy, dialing it just perfect was crucial to get a consistent low end response. It was very noticeable with kicks when the low end was dragging or rushing. Something to keep in mind if you're having issues with integrating your sub.

Addition to the last question, there are two possibilities for even bass in the whole room: 1) Double-Bass Array. At least 2 subwoofers, better 4 or 8 depending on wall width, at the front wall, and the equal amount of subs on the back wall, which invert the signal from the front subs with delay equivalent to wall distance. DSP needed. 2) Single-Bass Array. Same build-up as DBA at the front wall, and at least 50cm of mineral wool or similar absorber at the complete back wall.

Thanks Jesco! You know what would be very interesting if u got the time: Something on the infamous Attack Wall (ASC) or similar tube trap designs. Maybe even some DIY approaches or the TubeTrap as speaker stand combo - does that even make sense? awesome stuff as always helps a lot

For iso pucks I don't notice a difference with how it sounds in the room with or without them. The difference for me was with sympathetic vibration down through the desk and into my hands and how that made me experience the sound. It was an uncomfortable feeling and with the iso pucks, the sympathetic vibrations are gone.

I guess a lot of people keep banging on about speaker decoupling because many of us are in spaces that are so small/awkwardly shaped/serving multiple purposes as to make the installation of speaker stands very difficult or too wasteful of space. Unfortunately most home producers do not have purpose built studios, and if they do, they are also used as 'general' music rooms where space is a premium and placing speakers on a desk simply makes most sense. I think we (myself included) thought of iso pucks/iso stands as the best solution to a difficult problem, but it seems like your advice is 'speaker stands or bust'... is there no 'happy medium'?

Hi Jesco, Great content, truly enjoy and appreciate what you've been sharing. Was curious about your panels. What is the idea behind the verticle slats of wood, and is there a specific pattern or theory you are following with the spacing of the slats? Thanks so much for the information.

The first person asking has viewed too many videos from the KZfaq channel Acoustic Fields. Noak asking about phase issues, should remember that phase does not just come from the distance difference, but is inherent in the speaker and cross-over transfer functions (the so-called phasor phase), so you can have poor overlap regions, even if the sub is close to the main speakers.

at 8:11 Noak asked about phase shift and subwoofers, and this is a huge issue if you are using the normal store bought powered subwoofers. they all have added delay from dsp. and the phase adjustment they have only add more. on top of this people place subwoofer behind the main speakers increase the phase delay even more. and at 160hz subwoofer still plays with the speakers at 80hz crossover point, 1 meter at that point, and only 120 degree offset start making bad interference like the video response says. we are down to half a meter now. and when subwoofers in general are behind from the start you either need to place the subwoofer closer then the main speakers or add delay to the mains.

Where does this "we don't really know" stuff come from regarding decoupling with iso stands / pucks? There are so many good comparison videos out there that are not marketing that shows an obvious difference. What am I missing here?

Very nice and informative videos! If I may, about the subwoofer placement videos: You mentioned a sort of trial and error with subwoofer placement around your seating position. However, it seems you have done this with the subwoofer near the ground; is it safe to assume that raising the subwoofer makes no difference in phase/timing and frequency response? Additionally, it seems the subwoofer was placed near the bottom of your glass desk; does this mean that the subwoofer need not me in line-of-sight, and that the obstructions (table, shelves, etc.) have no negative effect? Thanks!!!

Cool, thank you so much for including my question and the detailed response! So far my solution has been to rely on headphones when jamming, seems like it’s the most practical solution in the end.

So I have a question to ask and I really hope it’s worthy of making a video so I have a 2.1 Monitoring system and and as I’m placing the speakers I heard that you said if I have the speakers higher up in my air level and pointing down that I would lose my phantom center I still have a phantom center but I still put my speakers down air level which is where my sub woofer sits just to see if I can get a little bit more out of the soundstage but after adjusting my speakers to air level and having him points straight at my ears with no tilt I noticed that in the upper meds it becomes a little less clear to my ears and I was wondering does it have anything to do with my sub being at the same height as my satellite speakers And common knowledge is kind of making me think that I shouldn’t have a problem in the upper meds due to the fact that the speakers were act like near fields that are flipped horizontally right and also when I readjust my speakers back to the position where I tilt my Tweeters to point in the direction of my ear it’s sets in the middle of the height of my room but for some reason it sounds better to me positioned like that and I have no clue whether or not if it would be wise for me to keep them as their original placement positions that I had the man or if it would be smarter to bring them to the level of my ears so that way they do not sit in the middle of the hike of my room thank you and I hope that I can get some help with this question

And I didn’t mean lose my Phantom center I meant that I will have less of a Phantom center in sound stage sorry about that don’t wanna sound like a dick repeating stuff wrong
