I'm just about to do a load of trident Cuttings again - some years nothing...other years loads. You can never really tell but it is alwways worth the effort. Good to see how you do Zelkova now that finally have one :)

You're welcome, I think it gives a more realistic view on bonsai if I do not only share great sucesses but also the disappointing outcomes.

I've had bad results with Zelkova in the past. However this year I took semi ripe cuttings in July and used a small electric propagator to provide bottom heat. 100% success this year. I'm in the UK north so probably similar climate.

Very nice, Zelkovas are very rare around here, so they tend to be overpriced, maybe one day I'll be able to get one, cheers!

I've had good success with Zelkova cuttings this year. A fellow member of the bonsai society was prunung his at a meet a few months ago so I nobbled all of his trimmings 😂 dunked in water and without any hormone I still got 50% success. I also reduced the leaves by at least half and I think this is one of the main keys to success, that and a plastic bag over the top to keep it humid.

@@GrowingBonsai they're all in small pots with good soil now so it's gonna be making good roots first with a view to creating some mini broom style trees I think :)

I've also had similar results about variable root taking from year to year as mention by those below. I've heard that rooting powder is best used before 2 years after purchase - since my stuff was well over 10 yrs old lol, I've bought new and put received date on it. Next year, I'll try again with all the tricks you've taught me today!!!

Be curious to know what happens to the rooting powder that it cannot be used longer. Feels like a sales trick!

@@GrowingBonsai I'm guessing that hormones - like all biologicals - will degrade - shelf life would likely depend on storage temp and humidity. The best info I found was when I googled an article titled "Rooting Hormone - Use Them Correctly". Sadly, not super helpful. Guess you have to do your own tests and track over time.

This is a really strange year for bonsai it seems (at least in our region). I've also had very little success with cuttings and air layerings this season. Same for growing from seed. Also lost some trees that were already well established.

Thanks for sharing. The weather is looping around too much. Hot to cold. Drought to drowning.. Plants have a hard time adjusting.

Hello Jelle, Thank you for all the videos. Your channel is one of my favorites! I was wondering, what size bags you use for your cuttings? I like that style to tent them. Thank you!!!

I am not completely sure tbh. I grabbed them from an online store, must be about 10 wide and 30 tall?

is the rooting hormone necessary? Or can it just grow on it's own? It's to make it into a big tree, not a bonsai.

Tobe honest, not sure. Give it a try. With it is likely to have a bigher aiccess rate
