After four immaculate seasons filled with betrayal, heartbreak and f-bombs, HBO’s Succession has come to an end with the finale closing the curtain on the Roy family and Waystar Royco. But who won this game of high stakes musical chairs and crowned successor (if anyone) to the O.G. Logan Roy? Did Kendall finally get what he always wanted and become the undisputed brutish CEO of Waystar? Like her name suggests, did Shiv stab her brothers in the back to become Queen of the castle? Did Roman recover from his meltdown to claim top spot? Did Tom somehow keep his head off the chopping block? Or by some early Christmas miracle, did Greg the Egg somehow become the Nero to Tom’s Sporus and take the crown? In this video we will be unpacking and explaining Succession’s ending, if we will be seeing these characters again in the future and what exactly it all meant.

Why do you think that Greg "unwittingly" told Kendal. I took it that he knew exactly what he was doing. Tom told him that his salary was going to be cut massively, had told him to get him coffee and had treated him horribly throughout the series. Greg saw an opportunity and ran with it. I thought it was pretty clear when he fought back in the bathroom that he did it on purpose. I just don't understand why Tom says that he's got him in the end... I mean Lukas calls him Judas, why would he let he be part of the company?

It was ok, but at the voting stage, instead of Shiv telling Kendall she didn't think he would be good for the company, why couldn't she just have said, Kendall you must be crazy to think I'm going to give up millions I could make by the sell just so you can be CEO, a position the board can take away at any time. I think everybody could have agreed with that reason for her voting yes to sell the Company.

I still think it’s incredibly ironic how Logan told Kendall in the season 2 finale that he had to be a killer in order to take over. Then in the series finale Shiv tells Kendall the reason he can’t be CEO is because he killed someone.

Kendall fought Roman in a see through window where everyone could see, Tom took Greg in a closed place where no one could see. You have to know how to control your emotions and play the game. As Logan said, "They aren't serious people".

As much I can appreciate media that doesn’t always end in some sugarcoated, fairy-tale “happy ending,” the ending of Succession left me lowkey depressed and pissed off.

The whole show was always deeply depressing and dark…sooooooo, there was never a way that anyone was ever going to win…even the “winners” didn’t win…and that’s kinda the whole point. No one wins ever.

@@amberlisa7365 I get that, but I was kinda hoping for a more “bittersweet” ending where ONE of the Roy children would “win” while everyone else lost horribly (or the cost of victory for the winner would end up being the dissolution of their relationship with their other siblings).

I would have liked to see Matsson fire everyone from Waystar Royco because he only wanted to keep their name. I think it was implied that Matsson was planning to do so. I remember Kendall acquiring Vaulter and then firing everyone. I think that showed a likely future for everyone who worked for Waystar Royco. The Vaulter CEO showed us a very likely future from Tom.

This was a tragically bittersweet ending to the show. You can't help but feel sorry for the Roy siblings, even after everything they've done and said over the past four seasons. Shiv is basically in the same position with Tom as Caroline was with Logan, trapped in a loveless marriage with a child that she's not sure that she really wants, Roman goes back to being a playboy, but is clearly traumatised, and Kendall has fractured most of his relationships, and is left with no allies, except for Colin.

All Shiv has to do was have some empathy for her own husband but it was clear that she never wanted to be married, at least in the traditional sense due to her wanting to cheat from day 1. She truly cared more about herself than anyone else including her brothers and just like them she can't make tough decisions.

I weirdly feel that, after a drug relapse , Kendall will get to the right rehab and discover himself and recovery...and come out the end with a much kinder, more fulfilling job and a Buddhist outlook.

Yes but he’s tragically chasing his father’s shadow despite the downfall it brings him every time he tries. His bipolar-esque episodes of extreme highs and lows blind him from seeing the way out like Connor managed to do, albeit that isn’t a fairy tale ending either…

Not to be cliched, but money doesn’t buy happiness…or even personal satisfaction. Yeah, he won’t have to worry about eating, but he is forever fully damaged. It will not be an easy life to live. Everyone will view him as a loser for the rest of time. All the private jets and yachts in the world won’t make that easier to deal with…

It's Macbeth. Shiv references it earlier in the episode when she says it would be like "lady macbeth two", so she is hinting that her husband Tom is Macbeth. Tom does inherit a "poisoned chalice" as a puppet CEO. And although Tom didn't murder Logan he does say to Shiv that he was "the last to see him.alive". Tom also loses it and goes a bit crazy after Logan's funeral, like Macbeth over Duncan. And Shiv has been scheming for the power herself but inadvertently puts Tom on the throne of power. In Macbeth their marriage is destroyed by the fight for the crown and the gift of the scorpion from Tom to Shiv was also mirroring Macbeth.

I think the Succession storyline of the Roys-Wasbsgans-hirsch is good at its conclusion. It will be cool to have a spin off what has been going on with Lawrence from vaulter. Or perhaps a House of Card’s type political thriller, based on the election, since we don’t know who the winner actually is.

I saw it coming. Thematically, the show was very clear that nepotism and hereditary title makes for bad leaders and bad people. So if the show wanted to end in a thematically coherent way, none of the Roy kids could get it. None of them were fit to lead the company. I didn't pick that it would be Tom, but in a sense... it's not *really* Tom. It's Madsen. And that was always the choice - Logan's preferred successor (Madsen) or one of his children. So in a way, Logan won.

it ended the way it was always going to end... Logan's kids fighting over the right to sit on his thrown - and when one realized they couldn't have it - they burned it all down to make sure the other siblings couldn't have it either

the winner is the swede, he is the owner. CEO is just a replaceable cog. But yeah, from Tom's aspirations and goals since the beginning, he got the best outcome. For the Roy's kids, the goals was not about money but power and prestige, and all of them (even Shiv) lost that.

It would very much depend on his performance in the coming years. A successful CEO is not easily budged. He could consolidate his position and surprise a Mattison, who almost lost everything for the Roys, since that deal was his safeline.

Tom eating Logan's chicken is actually the perfect example of why he is the right choice. The Roy children desperately want their father's approval but can't put aside their own egos. Tom wants approval, but doesn't need it.

A spin off PREQUEL of this show of a young Logan and how he built this empire would be a HIT. Whoever plays Logan needs to be ELITE. As edgy and masterful as Brian Cox. Leonardo DiCaprio and Bradley Cooper come to mind for a young Logan.

I Loved watching the series, but I was hoping they would have changed the narrative towards the end with the siblings wanting to start working on showing real love towad each other. It really saddened me to always see them acting the way they did with each other. You saw a lot of Power, Control, Jealousy , Money and Dishonesty, but not a lot of true love for each other. The way they started ,in my opinion, is the way they ended . The I don't care attitude, I am going to do what is best for me attitude , hurt people , hurt people. You see this in the world we live in now, but it would have been really good to see them come together. Out of all the stuff they been through as children and adults with there mother and father and their own life choices ,they felt like they had to fight each other to get what they wanted.

In the Season 3 finale, Kendall confessed to his accidental murder and Roman and Shiv showed some compassion for him. Then when that got in the way of his inheritance, Kendall said his murder did not happen. Something else did not happen. That was Roman and Shiv supporting him and coming together. They were only pretending to so they would have ammunition to use against him later.

It is a show about this family, the head of which is Logan Roy. He has 3 children, all of which want control of the company, which is a tv conglomerate (think Fox news). Basically they're all fighting to be his successor, that's where the title Succession comes from.

Matsson was crowned the new king. What happened to the Vaulter guys was likely to be foreshadowing. Earlier we saw Kendall acquire Vaulter and then fire everyone. My fan theory is that we saw the future of Waystar Royco under Matsson. What Tom won was a future of being put in the place of that Asian Finance Bro from The Menu.

One of the themes of Succession has been that people don't fundamentally change. There's no way Shiv and Tom are going to be in a happy relationship. If Tom becomes the new Logan, then Shiv and Tom will divorce, Tom will marry another woman, and they'll have a couple of kids together.

this review is a bit after-the-fact evaluation, meaning that explaining why tom wins with the result already in mind. For the characters, they did not know the result for the most part. Shiv and Tom, genuine love? no. at most, it's a partnership with mutual interests. More that, Shiv still has considerably influence over Tom, being the real power behind the puppet. But as Shiv's eulogy suggests, women in this show weren't taken seriously. And with motherhood in near sight, Tom showing any fatherly quality (judging how he treats Greg the Egg), the chance of a good relationship is slim...

They most likely they lost their seats, but the show didn’t address that. Even if they don’t sell their shares (which they should) companies still have different avenues to squeeze out large shareholders. Think buy-backs, further splitting of shares, etc. Assuming Kendall didn’t jump into the water, he’d be filthy rich for life as the show hints that the share prices are at their peak because of the acquisition by GoJo.

@@virtuerse Well, typically, when one company attempts to buy another, they generally OFFER a valuation HIGHER than whatever the stock is currently trading at, so then the CEO who is beholden to the shareholders that are just looking to attain a healthy ROI (return on investment) is put in a difficult position where even if they don’t WANT to sell, they’d also be crazy to reject such a lucrative offer and not act in the BEST INTERESTS of the shareholders. Anyway, nothing you said was technically wrong, I just felt like expounding upon it.

Great ending, sticking with the series' cynical take on the wealthy...with the individual rich kids all losing out to some market force (Gojo). I strongly disagree with the video's characterization of Tom as "not a brute". This guy is just as much as a douche and cruel as the other Roys. Using people as ottoman stools and enjoying laying people off are just some of his sick behavior. Remember.. There are no good guys in this series!

that scene shows tom now has the upper hand in the marriage. he was like a dog to shiv at the beginning but in the end he told shiv he got a car waiting and shiv followed like a dog which is not very typical of shiv btw... tom wants to hold hands and shiv half heartedly did. Tom is the boss baby

The show is not "cryptic", "odd" or "kinda mad" FFS. 🙄 He is judging a show based on his lack of experience of the content. 🙄 Actually Jesse Armstrong has friends from his days living in Manhattan who are just like the Roys and I know those people.
