Jeremy Strong became a household name after his gripping portrayal of Kendall Roy in Succession - and has gone on to star in the Broadway play An Enemy of the People and Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice.
Success brought huge scrutiny after a 2021 New Yorker profile, which documented his so-called ‘method acting’, went viral.
Strong’s acting style divided opinion not only online but also among his Succession cast-mates Brian Cox (‘Logan Roy’) and Kieran Culkin (‘Roman Roy’) who suggested he goes too far - while former colleagues Jessica Chastain, Anne Hathaway and Aaron Sorkin came to his defence.
How Strong approaches his craft combined with the use of words like “dramaturgically” in interviews has led to many labelling him as “a pretentious method actor” - but this characterisation misunderstands his craft.
This is the story of how Jeremy Strong went from a working class outsider to Emmy award winner. And on his journey to the top, his unwavering commitment has revealed genius qualities to his acting.

common critiques of jeremy often boil down to blatant anti-intellectualism. we're so used to being fed upbeat, scripted celebrity interviews that when an actor is actually invested in his craft, is honest about his method, and speaks with eloquence and passion, people interpret it as being overly self-involved and pretentious.

The most common complaints I’ve seen were about how difficult his professional mentality is to work with on a day to day basis. I think it’s very valid to be frustrated when someone makes your work environment much worse, even if that is serving the art. So I disagree with your assertion.
@Julia-hj7nn
@Julia-hj7nn 7 ай бұрын
@@DSQueenie they’re getting paid millions of dollars for their performances on succession. the least they could do is commit to the role imo. if he’s being a menace to his fellow actors and crew, yeah that’s an issue. i don’t think that’s an accurate portrayal of his method though

Professional ball players make millions too. However I suspect if a player became insufferable they’re getting cut, even if the irritating behavior resulted in a stat bump. Kaepernick was cut in 16, despite having a statistically better season than 15. There’s something to be said about unit cohesion.
@DSQueenie
@DSQueenie 7 ай бұрын
@@Julia-hj7nn the fact that any of them said anything about his behaviour at all tells you it was pretty bad. Usually actors wouldn’t criticise each other because they know that everyone has their own way of doing things. In the end “alls well that ends well” but I think Strong got some very fair and reasonable criticism for his behaviour on set. Things are changing in the film industry, gone are the days where Daniel Day Lewis could terrorise the ADs and crew as part of his “method”.

Sincerity is seen as performative to people who are too nihilistic to feel anything besides apathy and irony. It’s literally his job to feel things as genuinely as possible so as to portray his character’s emotions with humanity and realism.

I think there’s a genuine annoyance when hard workers work hard, and then do well. That yes, he was blessed to know his passion early, but it was through his sheer will and EFFORT to lead in a series that will be beloved for decades. His admittance to being uncomfortable when interviewed and unprepared is sympathetic enough, let alone knowing his background as a constant outsider. Appreciate you making this video!

Kendall was my favorite character in the show and its filled with incredible characters and performances. I didn't realize he was getting clowned on, honestly this approach is quite intense but if it works (which it does) then I can only commend it. For someone to be this passionate about their craft is incredibly admirable, especially in a world where a lot of media that is being produced can feel heartless and purely profit focused (I'm looking at you Disney). Succession is just a fantastic show and I remember watching the credits roll on that final episode thinking "this might be the best show I've seen" and how rare it is that we get something as good as this. I hope Jeremy gets the credit he deserves for putting so much into Kendall. I certainly wont forget him.

Let us be honest, he is simply too smart for Hollywood. That is why people consider him pretentious or pompous. They simply don’t understand what he is talking about. They have no idea what “dramaturgically”means, they’ve never heard of Glenn Gould, they have no idea who Chekov is, they’ve never read any of the books he mentioned in his interviews. He is not pretentious, he is simply intelligent and dedicated. Which is a shock in the modern world.

I'm so grateful the algorithm pushed me this video! I find Strong's interviews to be MUCH deeper and nourishing than the typical stuff; I have never felt his quoting is pretentious at all, rather, he seems like a very earnest, self-actualized person who just understands that he values things that many other people don't, and he isn't ashamed of it. I think people who are sort of dim think anything intellectual is pretentious, and people who are sort of shallow can't comprehend that others find genuine meaning in things.

Really enjoyed this breakdown of Jeremy. I only heard of Succession last year and caught up and loved the final season this year and I can say, I legit could not imagine anyone else playing Kendall. I feel like you can’t talk about Kendall without talking about Jeremy and his craft. Also seems like just a genuinely cool and nice dude.

With Kendall, had Jeremy Strong laughed at him rather than actually believing he IS him, it would not have been an iota as cringey and touching to watch him. I hated his guts but also felt so sorry for him. In Roman Roy, Culkin might have had a slightly easier time because not taking oneself seriously is part of Roman's character. He is a clown. Kendall wants to be the big, important, serious (but also cool) dude and he takes himself so seriously, it's cringey and painful to watch.

i respect strong's intent, but what he does is the equivalent of a writer saying she needs trauma to write characters who have trauma. there is such a thing called research

i mean every actor would have different approaches. if it works for him (and it clearly does) and it dosnt cause any harm or inconvenience to the crew around him them he should be free to do whatever he wants. its not like he is sending dead rats to his co-stars like Jared Leto

You hit the nail on the head with every single issue you addressed in this video. The way you defined genius at the end is definitely a fitting description of Jeremy Strong. Personally, I'm willing to boldly declare that Strong's performance as Kendall in Succession is my favourite series performance of all time. He was undeniably incredible throughout the entire show. Thank you for this very well-crafted video. You delivered all your points with great precision. You have certainly earned yourself a brand new subscriber.

I had heard the rumors, I heard all the talk surrounding The New Yorker piece on him. But I went in with an open mind and honestly I just respect him so much more as an actor having read it. Jeremy gives his work the respect and sacrifice he does, because it was his calling. He hustled and worked his ass off, and forged a method that is very unlike a lot of method acting I hear about because THAT is how you make a name. But he clearly has a sense of reality that grounds him when he’s done with the character; he is a vigorous reader, he absorbs knowledge like a sponge. He’s the theater kid who made it and THE actor who should’ve played Kendall Roy.
