IMPERIAL KNIGHT PT.1
This week was originally not going to have a video, but oh man you guys did not want me to skip! So I broke the Imperial Knight into separate videos and here we are. This video is focusing on the theme for the knight, and how I plan on implementing some really fun graphics into the paint scheme.
I want to reiterate that you don't need a cricut cutter to do the easier stencils, you just need a sharp hobby knife, time, and patience. But the cutter does help if you can get your hands on one, in my case, I borrowed it for a couple of hours from my wife. The point is, with a little bit of effort, you can do some really great work in your hobby, just don't be afraid to go for it!
I used a Cricut explore 2 for the cutting, and Cricut brand stencil vinyl.

100% you could, they are usually 1 color anyways, and something you could cut out by hand if you needed to. That being said, the Cricut can cut very very small stencils so you could easily make some to fit on a space marine shoulder.

Looking Great! Question: What is the material/paper that you used for the stencil? it appears sticky and allows for minimum bleeding- I learned the hard way paper is not meant for this.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
Ive used paper a bunch, that bleed is definitely a problem! In this case I got a roll of Cricut stencil vinyl. It was something like $6 on amazon. Awesome stuff, and easy to cut with a knife or scissors if you didn’t want to use the actual machine. It’s not as soft as I would like for stencils, but it’s waaaay better than paper. I was recommended to try painters tape on the Cricut for stencils, so I’m gonna do some testing here pretty soon.

Bad timing on my part... I actually did almost exactly this a couple of days ago. (Rather than cutting, I 3D printed it in thin TPU. Is the brush you're using to do the white edge highlighting a Windsor&Newton S7? I notice the little ball of dried paint on the tip causing you grief. That happens because there's a pilot bristle, one longer hair right in the center that's half a millimetre longer, and is useful for canvas painting. I hated my brushes until I figured that out, and (very) carefully did some surgery on it with an exacto knife.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
These are new brushes, sable, but not series 7s. I am noticing the leader hairs on this set are particularly long, I’m gonna have to cut them down pretty soon because they really are giving me trouble, though they weren’t too noticeable when they were super new. I’ve been using them and testing them for the last month or so, there will be a video pretty soon :) I’ll be performing the same surgery on these pretty soon as well.

10:43 you show the Cricut standard vinyl paper you used, I noticed that it is adhesive vinyl to stick onto the Imperial Knight shoulder pad. I'll have access to a Silhouette Cameo 3 soon and it takes A4 paper. So given this anyone know a good A4 vinyl paper brand to stick onto really small 28mm Warhammer miniatures, which is easy for the Cameo 3 to cut and the adhesive is not too strong so it doesn't rip off the paint and primer when I peel it off ?

I don’t thin the varnish when I use it. I just turn up the psi and it seems to shoot just fine. I’m also using a .4 needle on my patriot 105 so it lets a lot of paint out at once. Anything smaller and I think you would have to thin it a little bit.

Cool tutorial. Personally I found the picture you chose a bit too detailed. Hard to figure out in two-tone, from a distance. And how would you deal with copyright on your source material? No judgement, just curious about your opinion.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
The plan is to keep working this process, try and get something better than a 2 tone image. Hopefully I can start to get better at it and share the results! In time of course :) As far as copyright goes, this is an iterative art, it’s not the same as the original, even if it started out that way. It’s like selling a painting of the Mona Lisa, but you painted it, and it was on the back of a unique canvas. It’s most definitely not the original, and not even the same art work, though it might look like it a little bit. As far as I know, changing an art piece so it’s not the same as the original, or parodying that’s art, etc. is more than enough to exempt that art from copyright. Of course, I’m sure there are very specific rules, but I am not even a little bit worried about it.

What stencil material did you use on the Cricut? God I knew buying my wife that Cricut would pay off - and it has! For stencils now, and for cutting thin styrene into basic and sometimes complex shapes (check that out scratch builders!).
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues 4 жыл бұрын
Haha, yeah I borrowed my wifes Cricut. I think I was more excited about it when she got it than she was lol. I’ll have to try that styrene, I didn’t even think of doing that with it! For the stencils I picked up some of the Cricut stencil vinyl. Just typed that into amazon and I picked up a roll for $7. I made a ton of stencils for this project and I still have a lot left on the roll, super nice stuff, although it’s a little hard to stick down to the mat for the Cricut, I had to tape the corners down so it would stay on the board.

How do you keep the stencil from bleeding? Whenever I try it I just end up with a blobby mess.
@eBayMiniatureRescues
@eBayMiniatureRescues Жыл бұрын
The Cricut brand stencil sticks pretty well, but if you're still having trouble I've heard that varnishing over the top of the stencil first will keep paint from bleeding under it. I haven't tried it, but it makes sense that it would work as long as the stencil is stuck on there nicely. Also, making sure you're paint isn't too thin through the airbrush is a big help. In this case, I used Contrast paint to tint the white rather than flood the surface with paint, so there wasn't that much being applied at any time.

The end result turned out aight, and as long as you're happy with it then that's all that matters. Honestly, though, I had to skip 2/3 or so of the video, because the entire step-by-step process of creating the stencils lost my attention (I think it's maybe because I already know how to do it in several different methods and wanted to get right to the "let's paint" part, Idk). Perhaps maybe splitting that up into separate videos (one on how you make stencils, the other on using stencils to get a desired end-result paint job) could work better, to keep things on track and yet still be informative? Plus, it would be an extra video and could net more views, likes, etc. Just my 2 cents, as usual. I do like where you're going with the Knight, though, keep it up!
