I'm pretty sure the implication is that the first version of the "Sky People" were from the American Civil War - given the fact the villagers mention they constantly fought amongst each other. And then they buried the gold that they brought back with them.

Was s**t. Lousy effects, awful plot, terrible dialogue. Characters making stupid choices just to move the plot along. People falling down a chasm where cars and buildings are smashed, but somehow peoppe survived the fall. Stopped watching and didn't regret it.

You don't pay much attention do you? Multiple "time sinkholes" have opened up over the years. One of those sinkholes was clearly during the 1860s, which is how confederate gold ended up there.
