Sailing Aquarius Around The World

Sailing Aquarius Around The World

Күн бұрын

This is a major milestone for us - we are about to transit Suez Canal!
We start our journey at the top of Red Sea / Bottom of Gulf of Suez. Winds are not cooperating in this part of the seas, but as far as we been watching - it’s one of the better windows for our passage. 142NM to the entrance of the Suez Canal. On the way - usual - getting around fishing boats and their nets, and arriving to the huge anchorage at night. Next morning we move to Suez yacht Club, where Aquarius will be docked for the night. This time we are not checked into Egypt, therefore we can not go ashore and whilst docking we damaged our bow thruster. Oh well, luckily we don’t need it to transit the canal.
Next morning our pilot arrives and we take off to the next stop Ismailia. Join us!

What was the cost compared to Panama , Interesting vid .
@SailingAquarius
@SailingAquarius Жыл бұрын
For Panama Canal transit we paid around 2300 USD in 2019. But that was way more work and complexity, Suez was 700USD + 150USD as we were transiting on the weekend. Used Maritime Felix agency.

My first trip through the Suez Canal!😁 My first thought on seeing those pontoon bridges was that they were a leftover from the 1967 Egypt- Israel War. Not something you wanted to ask your Suez Canal Pilot about. Looking forward to the last section of the Canal!

First time I went through on a ship we had an inspection and they told us our Suez Light was not up to standard (A purpose built all singing and dancing searchlight) and we had to "rent a searchlight" for the passage. The rental turned out to be a 50 gallon oil drum with half a dozen incandescent light bulbs inside it! Marlboro cigarettes were the currency of the canal!

@SailingAquarius

The Northern winds is a real thing. It’s pretty much constant. We waited for the right winds in Jordan, which is much closer than going through Red Sea all the way. Lots of sailors need to wait out. We stopped only for couple of hours…

To whom it may concern Currently, the Suez Canal Authority is building a fuel station to supply yachts coming from the north (Port Said) and from the south (Suez) in order to supply fuel to yachts coming from both sides. Upon the arrival of the yachts from both sides, they will continue to transit canal without stopping until Ismailia station at the Yacht Club there, and they will stop to refuel and any other services such as Sign Off or Sign On, providing them with food, etc., and they will entering canal after that without stopping, and this means that the yachts will stop in the port of Ismailia only. Note: When all this is done, I will inform you of all new news

Sailing vessels have to give way to Fishing vessels under the Rules of the Road. Sailing vessels are the give way vessel. The fishing vessel is supposed to show the appropriate day shapes. Also, sailing vessels are not to impede the passage of vessels that can navigate only in the narrow channel (shipping lane could qualify as a narrow channel near the Sue’s Canal). See US Coast Guard publication.

Can someone explain to a novice sailor exactly what happened with the fishing boat? I understand fishing boats have right of way, but what exactly did Aquarius do to violate that right? I didn’t see them cutting the fishermen off at any point.
@MrJhchrist
@MrJhchrist Жыл бұрын
I think they were just mysteriously being dicks. Choose your own adventure: A) They wanted to catch Aquarius in a net then demand a fee for damage to their gear. B) They wanted to incapacitate Aquarius to "earn" a substantial salvage fee C) They believe they earn good luck / cast off bad luck with this maneuver D) It's a just like any other kind of localism where a local hood mad dogs the non-locals for.... reasons E) "Road"rage. Basically, they probably thought they had a reason, but it wasn't any kind of remotely good reason.

I am afraid that for Rule 10 coll regs - paragraph (e) allows fishing into TSS. Although paragraph (i) of the same rule states that in a TSS A vessel engaged in fishing shall not impede the passage of any vessel following a traffic lane. Paragraph (a) says This Rule applies to traffic separation schemes adopted by the Organization and does not relieve any vessel of her obligation under any other Rule. so... Rule 18 rules - Responsibilities between vessels (a) A power-driven vessel underway shall keep out of the way of: a vessel engaged in fishing
@SailingAquarius
@SailingAquarius Жыл бұрын
I just want to be realistic.... Fishing boats can not block shipping lanes. If they could, legally, then the fishing boats could block all the traffic in all the shipping lanes. Legal shipping terrorism.
