Izzy's style hasn't change at all people has figured him out. All the other "greats" has known to adapt their style to hang with any style. In comparison GSP learned how to wrestle that's how he was so long on top.

It wasn't really "counter-striking" on Sean's part. His strategy was to crowd Izzy and keep him on the back foot. This took away Izzy's ability to land power kicks, took the power off of his punches, negated Izzy's reach advantage, and likely tired Izzy out faster. There were times when Sean did counter Izzy, when he overcommitted to strikes/was reaching but, for the most part, Sean was leading the dance. Of course, to employ this strategy your defense has to be 100% on point, and man was Sean's defense on point Saturday night.

A lot of Izzy’s statistical “strikes” were kicks that got checked. The strike count doesn’t show that aspect. Half of Izzy’s “strikes” were basically the equivalent of him smashing his shin into a coffee table.

Strickland said training with Pereira helped improve his defense a LOT. Sean's weakness when it comes to defense has always been checking those leg kicks. Against Izzy, he switches to a muay thai stance and utilized front kicks to the body the way he utilizes his Jab.

Exactly 💯🎯 Izzy has never fought a truly technical boxer (especially defensively) whom modified the Philly shell perfectly for MMA & learned how to Perry & shoulder roll hooks by Pereira + the checks! I’m worried Sean’s style might not match up as well against other top contenders…but it seems to be Izzy’s kryptonite. I’m just glad he got his championship moment given his backstory, if I was making a movie about anybody i’d make it about him and his journey, and end it right after Megan’s interview where he puts the belt down because he cbf holding it anymore. End it with a shot of his team celebrating with the belt in the bar, as he goes to chill with his girlfriend as credits roll, showing how the belt meant nothing but making his new family proud of who he is, in his own way, means everything. Soz for the rant, just fkn inspired by his story and so happy for him!
