Description:
Sugar Ray Robinson. One of, if not the greatest boxer of all time. Ali's hero and constantly at the top spot in the pound for pound rankings.
With a record of 173-19-6 against so many all time greats, he stands out as the greatest and one of the best in the ring of all time. He was born on May 3 1921 as Walker Smith and took on as Ray Robinson in the amateurs due to a fighter named Ray Robinson not being there during one fight. Later on, someone said he was sweet as sugar and thus, the nickname "Sugar" was added. Sugar Ray debuted in 1940 at the age of 19 and went undefeated until he faced Jake LaMotta for the second time on February, 26, 1943. They would meet a total of 6 times until 1951 with only the last one being recorded and known as "The Valentine's Day Massacre". Much of Sugar Ray's prime was either not recorded or lost to time and most of his fight footage that is available is either passed his prime or before it. Sugar Ray Robinson also enrolled in the US army in 1943 where he had a 15 month military career alongside Joe Louis to entertain the troops during the 2nd world war. After that, Sugar Ray proceeded to hold the welterweight title for the first time in 1946 (6 years after his debut) after defeating Tommy Bell. He held that title from 1946 to 1951 and won the super middleweight title before losing on a 15 round decision to Randy Turpin to be dethroned as the super middleweight champion. Robinson then defeated Turpin in the 10th round in the rematch via TKO but not before being cut open in the 9th and being told that he only had one more round before the fight would be stopped. He then beat Carl Bobo Olson two times. The first in 2 rounds and the second in 4 rounds. Robinson's next biggest move was to face Rocky Graziano in a long awaited matchup where the middleweight title was on the line. He would KO Graziano in the 3rd round with a devistating right hand after being knocked down himself by Graziano. After weight jump to light heavyweight, Sugar Ray took on the light heavyweight champion in Joe Maxim on June 25, 1952. Robinson dominated until the 13th round where he no longer could continue due to heat exhaustion and thus, lost via TKO. It was 40 degrees celcius (10 degrees Fahrenheit) in the ring and it would prove to be Sugar Ray's last fight for almost 3 years until 1955. During that time, Sugar Ray Robinson took part in activities such as running businesses and making appearances in the show business (singing and dancing) but had to make an in-ring comeback due to his failing businesses and lack of success in the show bizz. He made his return in 1955 at the age of 33 when he fought Lombardo on march 29th of that year. Sugar Ray Robinson proceeded to regain the super middleweight title against Carl 'Bobo' Olson in another meeting and made another comeback in 1960 when he lost to Paul Bender in 1959. Robinson then defeated the likes of Gene Fullmer and Carmen Basilio. All whom defeated Sugar Ray Robinson before. Joey Archer would defeat Sugar Ray Robinson in 1965. It would prove to be his very final fight. Sugar Ray Robinson died in 1989 at the age of 67 due to Alzheimer's disease. He won the middleweight title a total of 5 times.
Other thing(s):
Since his retirement, Sugar Ray Robinson founded the Sugar Ray Robinson Youth Foundation to keep children off of the streets and made several guest appearances in TV serieses and movies such as "Candy" (1968 (movie)) and "Honeyboy" (1982 (movie)), "Excursion" (1953 (TV series)) and "Name That Tune" (1953 (TV series)). A documentary about him called "Sugar Ray Robinson: The Brigh Lights and Dark Shadows of a Champion" (1998) also exists with biopic named "Sweet Thunder" that is appearantly in development. Robinson was also part of the very first HOF class of the IBHOF in 1990 but was also part of the original Hall of fame class in 1967 by The Ring Magazine.

The best to ever do it. It is crazy that Sugar Ray started below middleweight but is still considered the greatest middleweight of all time (usually ties with Carlo Monzon)

@MonkeyDToniProductions he once went up to light heavyweight to fight Joey Maxim. He weighed 157.5 lbs and Maxim 173lbs. Ray lost do to heat exhaustion being it was outdoors and it was 103 degrees out. Ray was winning all the rounds by the judges too. Imagine if he won.....

@@xGhostRidah Yeah, I know what happened. It is pretty well documented as well. I am pretty sure that if Sugar Ray Robinson won, he probably would have went to heavyweight as well

What exactly do you mean with this question? Do you mean to ask if Sugar Ray Robinson is a showboat?

Like Marciano, only faster and with longer arms. I didn't see much ducking either.

He is anything but like Marciano. Sugar Ray Robinson was one of the fastestm most versatile and one of the most intelligent fighters in the history of boxing. The reason you didn't see much rolling is because I barely selected any footage of him rolling. He had excellent defense, especially for his time. He is basically the more complete version of Ali
