Coming up next is another classic guitar solo lesson... actually it's two solos in one video! Stay tuned! :)

Hope you could teach way cool jr. or top secret by Ratt! You definitely have one of the best channels for solos. I've learned a lot of Van Halen and Ratt solos from your lessons.

Nice!! Sooooo 80s with the flame top, the lighter sunburst, and those killer EMG pickups. Looks and sounds amazing! I remember when you mostly played your natural top PRS. I love seeing all these new axes over the years.

Hey Steve! Yeah, it was just a decade ago when I only played on two guitars! Good seeing you! :)

their is something special about you standing up with a green screen behind you and playing with a mindset of everything being visible but with a hint of performance. At least that's how I think about it. I've learned a few solo's from your videos. Thanks dude

Thanks for this, you’re first demonstrating this guitar on KZfaq! Very complete review, the backstory and the different tones you used add value to this video! I was lucky to visit Rudy’s music stop a couple of times but unfortunately two decades after John left. I have tried a couple Carved Top models but they are so rare and expensive that I will go for this one. Cheers, rock on! JC

Beautiful guitar, Dave!! And, as always, stellar playing!! The clean sounds through the active pickups sound nice.

Hello fellow Portlander! Love the opening to Lay it Down! Suhr guitars are well built instruments. I just picked up a modern terra HSH but love this classic super strat style!

Yeah, I recall those magazine pics of Mark Knopfler with that Pensa-Suhr and thinking it was the coolest guitar around. I used to read those mags cover to cover myself bro.
@PDXguitarfreak2 жыл бұрын
Right on bro. I remember thinking PRS guitars back then were the most exotic and "out of reach" guitars back then, but the Pensa-Suhr guitars seemed even more out of reach given they were built by a shop in NYC :)

I was fortunate enough to play one of these guitars in a shop yesterday (the Pelham Blue with Gotoh 510 bridge) and as you would expect from Suhr, it was absolute quality and had great playability, I didn’t know the bridge / middle position had the MK mod so that’s good to know. I’m surprised they don’t mention it on their website as the ability to get a more traditional Strat type tone in that position is quite a selling point.
@PDXguitarfreak2 жыл бұрын
Hey Dave, I was surprised they don't mention it either. Given the nature of the EMG 85 and that it technically can't be split, it prompted me to reach out to Suhr while I was waiting for the guitar to arrive, and clarify how position 2 worked, and it was then that the Suhr support team informed me that it includes the MK mod. I'm guessing it's Suhr being careful not to call this guitar a Pensa Suhr clone, even though it was really John Suhr doing all of the design and work back in the day.
@guitardave2 жыл бұрын
@@PDXguitarfreak yep, I think you’re right there - they can’t mention MK, but I’m a little surprised they didn’t come up with some kind of name for the mod as it’s a really useful feature. Great guitar though and I’m sure you’re very happy with it! I’d be very tempted to get one myself if I wasn’t currently saving for a custom Suhr to buy next year!
@guitardave2 жыл бұрын
@@PDXguitarfreak the other thing they could’ve done would be to use the 89, which has both a humbucker and single coil mode, but I guess John wanted to stay true to the original guitar.

I don't get the thumbs down. Jealousy? Dave, you deserve this for everything you do for us. Btw did Suhr give you the guitar?
@PDXguitarfreak2 жыл бұрын
LOL it's okay - thumbs down don't bother me. Kids will be kids. As for the guitar, no, Suhr did not give it to me. The only guitars that I have gotten free from manufacturers are the Donner guitars. :)

I remember the late 1980s higer end range of Yamaha RGX were active pickup superstrats. Must have been a design trend for manufacturers back then.
@PDXguitarfreak2 жыл бұрын
I think it was still considered new and cool back and then, in the late 80s. I always shied away from them, and really for no other reason than not many of my guitar heroes used them :)

The one I liked the most was the yellow one with maple fretboard and one humbucker, on the wall behind you))

@@PDXguitarfreak I think it's worth of being featured in one of your lessons. The color would probably go with a Warrant or Poison solo. May be Danger Danger.

The one guitar I had with active pickups was an Alvarez Dana II. They were a bit too noisy for the way I played.

Yeah I remember friends having the same issue with their active pickups. This Suhr, however, is pretty darn quiet... or at least on par with regular pickups :)

I'd love to see these high end makers consider that some players have larger fingers and that tiny nut is too narrow.
@PDXguitarfreak2 жыл бұрын
I don't have that problem, but I totally get it. My hands are a little on the smaller side so I guess it's the opposite.. I don't do well with wide necks.
@michaelsuh58712 жыл бұрын
Great review. Thanks! How would you describe the neck pickup clean tone for single-note leads? Is it possible to get a round, warm tone, not edgy and scooped like typical Fender single coils?
@PDXguitarfreak2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! The neck pickup definitely sounds like a single coil should. However, I've found that with enough midrange added, I can fatten up single coils nicely if desired. Won't sound like a humbucking neck pickup exactly, but fuller.

Has anyone compared these new standard legacy (flat top) to the original carved top model? Anyone noticed any difference in tone?
@PDXguitarfreak2 жыл бұрын
I have not tried the older carved top models. There are probably only two things I would do different with this guitar, if I had the option: 1) carved top, and 2) jumbo frets, although I have no problem with the heavy frets, I just like jumbo best. :)
