I think that was quite a while back. It was the Holohouse thing where she moved next to Coco and Kanata and iirc originally might have joined in the same house but Anemachi didn't want to separate (threw a tantrum as you say), but they were able to find a next door apartment for them both. Later Suisei had the "I might become homeless" thing where her rent agreement was coming to an end but she hadn't figured out a new house or for the contract to be extended but I don't think separating from Anemachi was ever brought up during that time.

honestly, it's great! been like 2 years since my younger sister started sharing an apartment with me, since she started going to university, my apartment was closer to her uni than our parent's house, she's a great cook, i save money since she pays half the rent, well our mom pays her half of the rent, we split the chores, though i do her laundry and she sometimes leave her used clothes lying around but aside from that it's been a great arrangement. EDIT: i just realized it's been like 3 years not 2.... since she moved in right before c0vid, time flies so fast, pretty soon she'd be graduating...

Maybe because they are unrelated so they more often than not can split up after an arguement and one person move out leaving the remaining one pays the rent which can lead to a lot more troubles. It's just my guess though

It's likely a risk assessment. For example, if it was Suisei that wanted to leave, but Anemachi didn't, then the person who wants to stay would no longer be able to afford the place. When she revealed that they were sisters, that showed that the risk for abandonment of one party is much lower.

​@@hoangthai9982true, it might get tricky to find another person to share and then the person left with the rent to pay cannot burden it and has to move to another place often cutting the rent contract short, making the owner having to search for another people and they lose money if they don't find anyone and it stays empty for some time.

"Sharing with friends" is viewed in the same light as subtenants (eg; you rent a 2-room from a landlord and then you rent out 1 of your rooms to cut costs) If you rent with your s.o, its 1 contract per household but if you rent with a friend, you're creating to 2 contracts that has to both agreed upon, if one friend decides to move to a different prefecture for work for instance, unless the other friend can pay for both shares of the rent, he will often leave too.

Not really strange when you're not sure if you're facing siblings. Many places in Japan have actually legalized same-sex cohabitations since 2016, they just don't acknowledge in-land same-sex marriages yet. There's been a significant increase since many Japanese celebrities have started coming out of the closet, too, so I can imagine there should be an influx of cohabits in the past few years, especially with COVID forcing everyone to stay home circa 2020-2023.

They obviously didnt realize they were related and they said that friends sharing a place is not allowed, so the only option left would be romantic partners. It's just a process of elimination. And dont take this as some kind of serious narrative, but I'm sure some people will pretend to be partners to get to rent a appartment together because of these overbearing rules from now on. Which is funny, because it used to be the other way around where same sex lovers were not accepted by landlords while "friends" being "roommates" was. lol

What are you talking about? If you live alone, you're most likely working full-time AND doing your own chores anyway. Rent can be up to 50-70% of your monthly salary, so doing twice the chores to live rent free is a pretty good deal.

It's more complicated than that, but yes, same-sex couples can get certificates in some prefectures and areas that make their relationship """official""" enough to be acknowledged for everyday purposes like cohabitation. They still didnt legalize same sex marriage though and it's not like these certificates are legally binding, so they dont help in court cases or if someone just doesnt want to accept them. But for landlords renting out appartments all that really matters is that the tennant are in a stable relationship and wont have one just bail.

@@yoursonisold8743 They don't like dealing with duel income situations. They'd rather only have one name on the lease and that person being able to cover the whole cost. The "civil union" paperwork that prefectures offer is a stop gag solution until the national government sheds enough of their geriatrics to finally have same-sex marriage. The same thing happened with age of consent laws. Pretty much every prefecture made it 16-18 while the national government had it at 13 until the recent change to 16(the 18 yo prefectures are still 18). Eventually, once enough prefectures offer civil unions for same-sex couples, they'll be able to shame the national government into doing something.

By your logic every female family member in the world should have the same breast size. Also, I think the room sharing issue is because they're same sex, which makes the birth rate comment moot

@@azuraug8693 It definitely isn't a same sex issue since the agent talked about couple registration (some local governments in Japan give certificates to same-sex couples that give some of the same benefits of marriage). From what I understand the issue is friends/dating wouldn't be accepted no matter the gender but family (they are siblings and the agent said that's fine) or official couples (same-sex relationship certification or marriage for heterosexuals (maybe it includes engagement as well, I don't know)) are accepted as tenants.

​​@@gokbay3057 I assume it's mostly stability reasons; the assumption being that family or couples would stay together, you won't have one person suddenly leave and the person leftover be unable to pay the rent. Does it make sense? No, not much, but when you're in a tight housing market any little thing can be nitpicked.
