My wife and I got married to this song. She walked down the isle to this tune and my eyes were watering with tears of joy. I couldn't be more happier that I got a second chance at life. If anyone is reading this, just remember that no matter how many scars you carry, remember that you can get through this tough game we call life. Good things happen to those who pursue it. Redemption is a beautiful thing.

This song reminds me of my family that has now broken to pieces. Being a man, I feel a need to not show emotion. But I doubt anyone will read this. But if you do, and you are...stay up. And find that song that keeps your memories you cherish the most alive and warm. Never forget who you are.

I read this....going through this. Lost my job bullied by "leftists". Lost the ability to see ly daughters wake up and go to sleep each night. Hardest thing I've ever gone through....I'm missing my babies and missing their growing "moments". I haven't handled things well...didn't have a good upbringing. This song brings me to tears...it's beautiful. Reading what you wrote has helped....and also brought me to tears. My soul is strong but does grow weary. God bless you for the pain you've experienced.

Discovered Gregory's music about 7 years ago. I'm a combat vet and have struggled a lot returning home from this latest deployment. I've spent hours working listening to all of his music - but this song especially has brought me so much peace. My wife and I were able to see him in concert last month in Denver. It was incredible. Felt like I completed the journey home - finally. Very grateful for this artist 🙏.

When my newborn son, Jack, couldn’t sleep at night or was having teething pain, I would put this record on and sing to him and his whole body would sync to the music and it soothed him into a peaceful slumber. I am in love with this song. I am in love with life. Again. This song just made me realize that I’ve got to go back to the simple. To the begging when I was inocent and without fears. I was a Kid trying to go through the way that was designed by God for me. But then I started getting distracted by THINGS that were just THINGS… Now I know. “Turn this diamond straight back into the coal”. Go back to the simple.

Remember when our songs were just like prayers Like gospel hymns that you caught in the air? Come down, come down sweet reverence Unto my simple house and ring And ring Ring like silver, ring like gold Ring out those ghosts on the Ohio Ring like clear day wedding bells Were we the belly of the beast or the sword that fell? We'll never tell Come to me clear and cold On some sea Watch the world spinning waves, mad machine Now I've been crazy couldn't you tell? I threw stones at the stars, but the whole sky fell Now I'm covered up in straw, belly up on the table Well, I sang and drank, and passed in the stable, hmm, hmm That tall grass grows high and brown Well I dragged you straight in the muddy ground And you sent me back to where I roam Well, I cursed and I cried, but now I know Oh, now I know And I ran back to that hollow again The moon was just a sliver back then And I ached for my heart like some tin man When it came, oh it beat and it boiled and it rang Oh, it's ringing Ring like crazy, ring like hell Turn me back into that wild-haired gale Ring like silver, ring like gold Turn these diamonds straight back into coal Turn these diamonds straight back into coal

Just one tiny correction to the lyrics.......should read “like gospel hymns that you called in the air”..... in some small churches, a person in the congregation led the hymns and this was known as “calling a hymn”...These hymns were most often unaccompanied by piano or Instruments.

This song makes me think we made what we wanted and lost what we needed. The whole song describes the dreams we had in a simple world. We created amazing things and went to amazing places and now all we want to do is connect with those quiter places we left behind. I think the last stanza hits it perfectly "Turn these diamonds straight back into coal"

I’ve visited the remains of Cornucopia OR twice, and have a video about it on my channel. That’s a heavily nostalgic place, even if you don’t have a connection to it. The fact that you know someone who worked there while it was in its heyday is incredible. This song and video makes me think about the time Cornucopia was active. There’s something oddly heartbreaking about that age being behind us, even if many things today are better. This song reflects that.

At 31 years old, I've yet to find love, and observing those around me who have experienced it leaves me pondering what joys and challenges they've encountered. Comparing their experiences to my own, I can't help but lament the passage of time and the missed opportunities to share my life with someone special. Each day seems to slip away in loneliness, and I'm left grappling with unanswered questions about when, with whom, and how I'll find love.

I discovered Gregory, one day 10 years ago shopping with a girlfriend, his music was playing in the background, The Stable Song. I actually stopped & had such peace fill my heart, I could swear this person with the most soulful voice is indeed a great gift from God. When I hear his voice, god wraps his arms around me.

I truly believe this is the most beautiful song ever created. I'm someone that is obsessed with music, listened to songs from all different genres and eras, with a preference towards old music. And yet when I discovered this song in December, I was literally speechless. It touched my soul. I have listened to it at least once almost every day since, I'd even say it has helped me cope with the grief of losing both my grandparents in 2020. The words just resonate with me, as does the 'circle of life' vibe. "Turn these diamonds straight back into coal." And of course, the instrumentals just fit perfectly with it. I can't imagine anyone topping this for me personally, and I had actually already thought that once when I heard San Luis for the first time in October. So until Gregory comes out with another song that is basically a transformative religious experience for me, this reigns supreme. :)

Lyrics Remember when our songs were just like prayers Like gospel hymns that you caught in the air?
@random-nz7dy
@random-nz7dy Жыл бұрын
I absolutely love the lyrics of the song. I've always interpreted it as a very deep song about growing up, seeing the world differently. Aiming for things so high in the sky that "The whole sky fell". And in the end of the song he wants to go back into the wild gale, and have the diamonds turned back into coal. So it's like you chase these things to get to where you're at and you look back and you wish you could go back to when you had innocence. To when you were wilder. There's certain things I've looked back out in my life that I'm like man even though maybe I didn't have it as well at a certain point I almost wish I could go back there again. Wish you could be the person you were at a certain point in time again.

the words are cryptic and that's one reason i like this song.. but after listening to it so many times, to me it feels like he's talking about a shattered relationship. one that wasn't perfect by any means, but there was some kind of raw magic to it. and the song is kind of lamenting having to grow and leave it behind.. obviously he's better for it (as a diamond is better than coal) but he misses the un-polished brash beauty of his past self (the wild-haired gale). i can relate to that SO much lately

It’s been a month since my partner said ”it’s over”. 10 days before she was making affirmations of total love. So all my value judgements and compass points were utterly shattered. I pretty much had a mental breakdown. I care for sick kids-couldn’t do it for a while. I needed a rock to hold onto,something true,something real,something that knew of pain. And I found it in family here in Australia,but also in your American homegrown: Patty Griffin (When it don’t come easy. Heavenly Day. Kite...many more). But this guy touched my heart and soul like he was heaven sent. I have shed too many tears, I don’t want to be this anymore,and this guys genuine spirit is bringing me home to the person I used to be. Thankyou Gregory. Hugs to you.

Someone had to write this song down. This is one of those tunes that lives its own life apart from human conventions despite its being entirely about the human experience. It aches to be released from silence into the lives of people, and such a song can exist for decades without anyone hearing it, because it takes a special soul to render it onto paper and into notes. I'm so grateful it lives with us, now, and that Gregory was the person who captured it for us.

Memories flood my mind and heart like looking through a family photo album. Layers of life and love. Pages being turned and the years just pass by. Then in the end I realize most of the people in the photos have gone over to the other side and the lonely feelings make my heart melt and I set and wander what does the future hold for me. Will someone set and remember me in a photo album?

This music makes me so thankful, thankful to be alive. Thankful to be able to be a part of this crazy world for the brief amount of time I've been gifted. Each day is a gift, each breath is a gift... We all should make the most of it.

“ I ran back to that hollow again” It reminds me on how we will, at some point, always end up in our roots. It also elaborates that we can’t forget about our starting point in everything as that is what brought us here.

Gorgeous old soul music. the fact that a young man wrote it (and so beautifully) can give hope to the entire world.

For as long as I can remember this song has been my favourite song. I first heard it maybe 6 years ago when I was studying and ever since then I found myself gravitating towards it - it didn’t matter if I was happy, sad, disappointed or hopeful, this song always somehow knew exactly what I needed from it. One month ago the person I thought I would marry and loved more than anything left me. I lost my job. I lost my apartment and am back home with my parents. This song has once again presented me with all the answers. Turn these diamonds straight back into coal...

I’m real sorry to hear that. You probably threw stones at the stars and the whole sky fell. And you cursed and you cried but now you know.😭
