i've seen a twitter thread saying that this joke was probably a dad joke, and that a better translation is "a dog walks into a tavern. His eyes can't see anything. He should open them."

I'm gonna piggyback on your likes and offer, the joke is that taverns are always too damn dark to see anything. The dog takes this opportunity to open a tavern for business because it's dark inside, perfect tavern atmosphere.

@@Envengerx Funnily enough, the line in the text before the joke says something along the lines of "A dream is but stupor, to a dog". Note that animals were very often used as the subject of Sumer jokes & tales, regularly doing tasks in the place of humans. The animals were almost always associated with certain traits or behaviours, very much like how we'll still say things today, such as "the cunning fox". They'd use a fish to represent someone regal for example, or farmyard animals to represent farmers etc. Dogs in particularly were often used to represent someone being mischievous and were used very commonly as the subject in a large number of their jokes, likely for this reason. So whilst you may be right (and there's no way to know for sure), there's nothing particularly uncharacteristic about it being a dog who enters the bar in a Sumer joke, so I wouldn't read in to that part too much.

@@Danso_3000 thats fascinating. I guess the culture is so different that it feels weird to think about it that way. Imagine instead of making a joke about an Australian i would use an emu in their place. Also dogs have a strong sense of smell so it can be that. It cant see anything but just by knowing from the smell i found out which is the good alchol. I think that might be it.

It's a sex joke (although it's probably tame enough to be SFW). The plain meaning hides a double entendre and I know what it means (thanks to a bit of research I did into Cuneiform for a tattoo I got last year). A dog walks into a bar. He says "I can't see anything. I'll open this one." Here's the transliteration and translation from the original cuneiform: 73. ur-gir-re (dog) ec-dam-ce (bar) in-kur-ma (enters) 74. nij na-me (anything) igi (eyes/see) nu-mu-un-du (nu=not du=open) 75. ne-en (this one) jal taka-en-e-ce (I'll open) The first thing you need to know is that ec-dam-ce doesn't just mean "bar". It also means "brothel". This is a sex joke. The joke hinges on igi (eyes) nu-mu-un-du (not open) being a double entendre for igi (eyes) nu-mu-un-su (widows). The cryptic punchline "I'll open this one" is a translation of ne-en (this one) jal taka-en-e-ce (I'll open) But this is also a double entendre. A DOUBLE double entendre, if you will! The verb "to open" is comprised of two symbols: jal and taka. But those words have individual meanings too. Jal means "To be available" and "taka" means "I'll leave with this person" So, the double entendre changes the joke to: A dog walks into a BROTHEL and says "I see widows" And the punchline is: "This one's available, I'll leave with her"

Guys i think i have cracked it. Dogs generally have a good sense of smell and the bars are dark. So it might enter a bar and it doesnt need to see the alchol or ask thw waiter. Just from the smell, it knows which one it should open. This joke works even now, i can be siting with my friends and make the joke, "Even if i was a blind dog, i would have still picked this one."
