"Summertime" is an 'aria", which is a self-composed piece for one voice, with or without instrumental or orchestral accompaniment, normally part of a larger work. Composed by the legendary George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess, this song soon became a popular and much-recorded jazz standard, described as one of his finest compositions. Gershwin's highly evocative writing brilliantly mixes elements of jazz and the song styles of African-Americans in the South-East United States from the early twentieth century".
