Days of Pain and Victory

5 жыл бұрын

In this episode, I install a Summit Racing electric fuel pump in my 1979 Jeep Cherokee. This pump is easy to install and comes with detailed instructions. It feels like it has a decent construction, and looks nice too. Well see how it holds up after a summer of driving and wheeling. Stay tuned for a follow up in the fall! ‪@SummitRacing‬

The optimal gallons per hour is calculated with the following equation
Optimal GPH = (Max HP x BSFC)/(6lbs/gal)
GPH=gallons per hour
HP=horse power
BSFC= brake specific fuel consumption (typically 0.5 lbs/HP/hour @ wide open throttle)
So, for my application
(175 HP x 0.5 lbs/HP/hour)/(6lbs/gal) = 14.6 gal/hour
This Summit pump flows at 35 gallons per hour, which is more than sufficient for my tired old AMC 360 with the Holley two barrel.

Good tutorial and information, convinces me to have this install done (on my 64 Ranchero, 200 six which is sometimes hard starting) by a professional mechanic, or friends with knowledge and skills like you. I did do a decent job on prep (aka endless sanding) for new paint however!! :D lol

Guess I never really thought about that, my first car was carbureted and so it's what I learned on, but now with fuel injection, remote start, etc I guess it doesn't take much thought to start a car haha! With a carb you gotta pump it a little, pull the choke, get it to fire, unchoke it, feather the throttle, etc etc. Thank you for watching, subscribing, and the feedback!

Thanks! From summit’s website Summit Racing recommends that you mount the fuel pumps outlet at 30-45 degrees above horizontal to reduce the risk of vapor lock. This mounting technique will allow vapor to pass easily through the pump.

Hi. Is that pump for only cold start to avoid having to crank for a long time? I assume you need a switch to kick start the pump before cranking the truck ON for easy start right ? Then as the truck starts you switch off the pump ?
@DaysofPainandVictory
@DaysofPainandVictory 3 жыл бұрын
In this situation it was my only pump so it was always running. There are people that use them for a priming pump to their mechanical pump, in that situation you could shut it off after fire up
@MrSerioLok69
@MrSerioLok69 3 жыл бұрын
@@DaysofPainandVictory Thank you for the reply. So if I want it just for priming on a cold start and shut off ones the engine is ON , will the gas flow smoothly to the mechanical pump and carb as the pump of off. ? I have a 75 k5 blazer that I don’t use a lot but when I want to use I have to crank a few times which can kill my battery. To avoid the cranking I add a few drops of fuel on the carb and kicks start like a champ. This only happens when I don’t use the truck for 2 weeks or so. It’s also park my driveway on a small slope hill which makes the gasoline more complicated to reach up the mechanical pump and carb.

I have a holley mighty mite which is identical to both pumps and is probably the maker of both those. Anyway I used mine in a 87 GMC 305tbi to carb swap. Mine now registers 5 psi at start up but within a couple minutes it drops to 2 or less on the gauge. That is with the gauge mounted at the AC box near the top. WITH the hood raised and it cold outside or for us a heatwave at 45. It is new. The lines are new the wiring is new as is the relay fuses and the rest to include filters. Also the carb and intake are new as well. EVERYTHING new. Anyone have an issue of these little pumps going bad quickly? How long did the MR gasket last you? Is this one still working since you uploaded this video?

These pumps are all the same - the Edelbrock even is just the same pump with a red plastic "bubble" around it. They're all made by an offshore supplier. For what they are - they're fine - small simple little pumps that tend to work pretty good and don't cost a lot of money. They're magnetic drive, which is pretty cool (if you intend to dead-head it straight into a carb with no return / over-pressure relief line). My Holley has been feeding the onions to my lawn mower (small 10-1/2 horse tractor) for quite some time now.

I recently replaced an aluminum keg fuel tank in a 75 CJ5 that the PO had installed and "rigged". Well after replacing with an OEM fuel tank my fuel delivery system has been out of sorts! It looked like I was not having enough pressure from the electric Facet posi-flo fuel pump 35 gal/hr. I bought a Holley 35 gal/hr electric pump and still the same thing. Anyhow, my question is what type of problems can cause what seems like no fuel pressure at the carb?
@DaysofPainandVictory

I wonder if the fuel pick up tube in the tank is clogged? or the filter on the pump? Do you have a fuel pressure regulator?
@JuanRodriguez-yl9oq
@JuanRodriguez-yl9oq 4 жыл бұрын
@@DaysofPainandVictory I thought that as well. I checked the pickup tube and all clear. I'm just not getting back so will have time this week to work on it. I went ahead and bought a new filter for the pump and a new fuel filter before carb. We'll see if that works.

No, and I have had no issues with leaking. If you choose to use sealant, make sure it is suitable for gasoline such as this stuff from summit (part number 1525607), Do not use teflon, it will break down and clog up your fuel system. Thanks for watching!
