I bought a viper and got up about 15 feet and was worried to go higher because i could not tell in the dark of it was level or not. I never practiced i just went to the woods and up a tree. I watched enough videos now to know to pay attention tilt it a good bit and stop when its level. Bought a headlamp to make it easier lol. I was always a ladder stand person until a few years ago i bought a hang on to be mobile and the first time using it brand new the cable broke. Had it up 25ft up so thank god i started wearing a safety harness,y wife forced me to buy one and i was so hard headed and over confident because i have never had an issue.

Those are awesome treestands. My son Jerod has a Summit Viper, but the only difference is his doesn't have the rail that you set on. So when climbing he has to put his arms on armrests and support his weight there when climbing and descending the tree. We don't use climbers a lot now, we all have ladder stands. My climbing treestand hasn't been used in probably 10 years. Great review and video. Juddie - J & J TOA

I may get some flak for this but I think I may be the only person to hang the top part first, as high as I can reach, then the bottom. Its easier for me to slid up into position that way than fight with the bottom portion if I hang that 1st. To each their own! Best of luck this year to all!

summit stands are great ,we have been using them for about 15 years ,i had a weld break on a viper and they shipped me a new one fast and return label to send old one back .we have switched to using goliath's by summit ,they give more room and are more comfortable when wearing coveralls or heavier hunting clothing. they are wider and deeper .just wish they had left the velcro covers on the arms and safety rail that the older ones had . the zip ties allow the foam to bunch up ,the plastic stirrup has a way of slipping a little but like it better than the rubber straps. they climb quiet all and all ,best stand i have used.

Good lesson! For me the hardest thing about the Summit Viper is packing it up. I could never figure out which piece goes in which. Your video (unlike the ones on the Summit website) explains it very simply. Put the seat down, then slide the footstand into it. I got a pair of padded shoulder straps for about $10, plus a molle belt, because mine came with this lame one-piece shoulderstrap thing that I could never figure out. I guess they expect most folks to DIY?

Nice job. Just a caution. I've been using the Summit climbers for a long time. They're excellent. After a lot of years of the first one I bought, an older style, it developed a crack that I had welded by a professional. He did what looked like an excellent job. To me, it looked stronger than it did new. I asked if he would guarantee it. His response, was "No. I'm not going to guarantee anything that will get you far enough up off the ground to kill yourself". My point is, once you get off the ground you're putting yourself in danger. Watch for stress cracks even in brand new stands. Check you stand over every time you use it. BTW, I've been using it for at about 10 years since he welded it. The only other problem I've ever had was, early one cold fall morning I was climbing a popple tree. About half way up I pulled up the top part and thinking it was firmly attached to the tree let loose and it slipped and dropped to about my ankles. It felt like like I was standing there with my pants down. I just picked it up and reset it but it scared me. Some trees, a smooth barked popple for instance, are simply not safe to climb. Pick a good rough/soft barked tree to climb. And in the winter you're not going to get as good a grip as during warmer temperatures.

I have another question, I'm just learning how to use this tree stand, I've got the bottom part working right, but I'm fighting with the top part, it keeps dropping on it's own. How do I stop that, it's making me very nervous.
@joshandhuntersadventures5046

Sounds like you may need to loosen the top up like it is to tight and not able to bite on the tree. Make sure to always tie the top and bottom together anymore questions please ask
@lukel8045
@lukel8045 3 жыл бұрын
When you set it up at the bottom of the tree, you never want it to be level or 90 degrees to the tree. Depending on how much the circumference of the tree shrinks as it gets higher will make the difference on your angle that you set up. Like an average tree, you'd want to start off at say 70 degrees. That way when you get up to where you're going to sit, it's going to be around 90. Never ever ever go below 90 degrees. Ever. That's how people fall. If you're at say a 100 degree to the tree, you lose the leverage you had and your weight is your enemy. There's a couple parts in this video where my butthole puckered cause I saw him doing it. But good rule of thumb, if you're ever in doubt either stop or go back to the bottom and adjust your cables.

I’m terrified of heights my Uncle broke his back falling out of a tree stand back in the day so I think that’s part of it. Is there any advice anyone can give me to get over that? How safe are these climbers? I really want to start hunting next fall. Maybe I should just get a ground blind?
@joshandhuntersadventures5046
@joshandhuntersadventures5046 3 жыл бұрын
Well if you are going to use a tree stand you must use a safety harness cause that for one will save your life. Get a good one you can find them on sale this time of year. Thanks for stopping by and watching
@brianvermeulen558
@brianvermeulen558 2 жыл бұрын
These climbers can be extremely safe. The key to get confident with it is to get a good one that will handle your weight and then some. After that, practice only going a few feet up in the tree (as in 5 feet) and get confident with how to handle the stand and yourself. There is no hurry, and you should practice it to the point that you feel a bit bored. Once you are confident at that height then try going up to 10 feet. Again, get comfortable moving around, sitting, etc and when you are feeling good with it, repeat the process to the desired hieght. And yes, always wear a harness, they save lives!

My only criticism of these types of videos is that is doesnt show you with all your hunter gear as you arrive at the tree, be it bow or gun, your pack if items and how you manage that all going up the tree with you. I understand its a process as I have done it many times, but a complete video needs to include everything. Not just the stand and the climb. Respectfully, stated.

Well you won’t take all the stuff up the tree with you until you get to the spot where you won’t to be in the tree. You will have a pull rope to pull your bag up if you have one and your gun or bow. Never try to climb with your pack on or your weapon could end in a disaster.

This is a great stand, period! It's lightweight, climbs easy kzfaq.infoUgkxlQ7TDIrnnSXXbRgFFaxqwullRJJIuYAs and feels solid while in the tree. The seat is easy to fold up for climbing and sits comfortably for long days in the woods. The only downside I have is that it might be too comfortable, but I like napping in the tree anyway. This is the second Summit Viper I have owned. The old one is steel making it heavier, but this aluminum version is about 9-10 lbs lighter. I recommend buying a better fall harness as the one included is clunky and not super comfortable. I think it will work fine if you NEED to use it, but there are lots of other more comfortable options out there.
