Our cruise had a free shuttle from the dock in Majorca to the downtown. The cathedral was a short walk away. I agree it’s well worth the visit.

Princess Cruises shore excursions are ridiculously expensive . As an example the Boston trolley tour is $72 through the ship and I believe $42 if booked locally . They get away with it because of the “ship will wait for our tours to come back” statements which feed peoples insecurities . Most of these tours you can do on your own , in some cases it would be simply less expensive hiring a taxi . However there are plenty of tour companies out there independent of the ship that can provide decent tours . Be sensible and get tours which get you back to ship 2 hours before dept , just in case . For Pompeii it is possible to travel their by train on the Circumvesuvian line . This means you need to walk from port to station . Naples does have attitude so some people might not be comfortable with this . Mallorca (Majorca) can be done on foot , just get a taxi from port to centre .

Ephesus from Kusadasi can be done quite easily using a local dolmus (mini bus) for $1.25 each way plus about $22 entrance fee. Takes about half an hour. Just need to do some research about were the bus stops.

We dis a full day ship excursion of Vesuvius and Pompeii--long day, but worthwhile. I couldn't figure out how to do an "on your own" and hit both sites. No regrets. We did an excursion booked thru our travel agent that he had arranged with his inter-agency group....Ephesus and Mary's house, a silly little museum, and lunch at a Turkish villa with pony rides for kids, a tour of the lower level of the home, could pick fruit in the orchards, etc....all at a cost of $100 per person. We were in groups of 8 per vehicle, so no waiting for that last straggler, etc. One of the best excursions we've done on any of our 50 cruises. Ephesus is well worth the time and effort, regardless of how you do it. Our only complaint on our 28 night Med cruise is that we did too many ruins; we should have skipped the Greek island ruins and stopped with Ephesus and Pompeii.

It seems like you are going on tour to see more “rocks”. Ha ha!

Next time skip Pompeii and go to nearby Herculaneum instead - gives you a far greater understanding and view of what went on back in 79AD. not near as crowded and tourist-oriented.

Before our 2/8 cruise was cancelled, we were doing Herculaneum the first cruise and Pompeii the second cruise. Since we had to choose, my wife wanted to cross Pompeii off her bucket list, so we went to Pompeii. Herculaneum next time for sure!

We are going back to Naples in June. 2 years ago we did Pompeii with Mount Vesuvius, which was cloudy so we actually couldn't see inside the volcano. This time we are going to do Herculaneum on our own by walking to the train station and taking the train there. If we go back to Naples for a 3rd time im going to do Mount Vesuvius again but will wait to book something local to make sure its not cloudy/stormy. @@rexdillinger
