I can't even stand how much I love this particular version of Sunday Bloody Sunday. I remember when I saw Rattle and Hum in the movie theater. I was in 8th grade. I went with a bunch of girlfriends. Most got bored. Me and one other girl were mesmerized. I could not take my eyes off the screen. It was a magical, spiritual experience I will never forget. I went home and told my parents and their friends about it. I told them about the part when Bono said, "Fuck the revolution." I was an 8th grader in a Catholic School. We didn't cuss. It was a glorious thing to tell my parents. They didn't "care" because it revolved around music and tragedy and they are music junkies (and big fans of U2). I have this movie on VHS and DVD. I'm now 41 years old and I am still obsessed. Some things just stick with you. We grew up listening to the Stones- my parents are huge fans, and when Bono started singing Ruby Tuesday in this movie I about lost it. I can remember my parents and their friends dancing on the dining room table to Ruby Tuesday when we were kids. They were and are so much fun and we had to best childhood and this movie and album just remind me of all things good in my life.

Thanks for sharing that's good stuff. I was broke in college outside Nashville and saved up enough money to see them in Louisville Ky during Joshua Tree tour. It was life changing. I felt as if I had been to the best inspirational and spiritual church service you could imagine. Then a few weeks later they announced a concert date at the University I was attending! Twice in one tour at 18 yo. It still is likely the best show I've ever seen. Clapton, Ray Charles, BB King, Springsteen, Pink Floyd. I've seen them all and many more. Maybe better musicians, but Bono held the crowd in his hand and made you feel as one and you could change the world for better.

@@grantsecomb I have loved U2, for literally-as long as I can remember; The first Album I ever owned was The Joshua Tree; the earliest Music I can remember hearing were my parent’s ‘Joshua Tree’ Cassette Tape, the ‘Achtung Baby’, ‘War’ ‘Rattle & Hum’ CDs, and the ‘Live At Red Rocks/Under a Blood Red Sky’ CD/VHS. On top of that: Bono’s Live Vocal of _”Bad”_ (from ‘Wide Awake in America’-is the reason I became a Singer… And, Larry Mullen’s Drumming on ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ is the reason I started Drumming. I think all of those things-show how much, and how long-I have loved and admired U2. So, now that I have said all of that-I will say this: ‘U2 is _not_ The Greatest Artist of All Time. They are definitely _among_ the All Time Great Artist, but they are not THE All Time Greatest Artist. And there’s a very simple reason for that: There is only *One* acceptable Choice for _’The Greatest Musical Artist of All Time’_ - It’s indisputable, and there isn’t a Single Artist that even comes close. _The Greatest Artist Of All Time is:_ *The Beatles.*

Actually the beat of a song is just a thump thump thump and alone is rather plain or boring. That's more of a drum or bass guitar description. Guitars are rhythmic instruments. A better description would be an energetic rhythm or a powerful chord progression. The Edge is an amazing guitarist. Awesome use of effects to make a sound that is totally unique. Love U2. Nobody sounds like them.
@dennisk.75747 жыл бұрын
for real? i mean, is that the popular word? like when you talk about the song, you say something like "Nice voice, deep lyrics, good beat or cool flow" and if you wanna say something positive about the guitars theres only da opporturnity to say "wow, what a nice chord progression"?

"Sunday Bloody Sunday" grew from a guitar riff and lyric written by The Edge in 1982. While newlyweds Bono and Ali Hewson honeymooned in Jamaica, The Edge worked in Ireland on music for the band's upcoming album. Following an argument with his girlfriend, and a period of doubt in his own song-writing abilities, The Edge-"feeling depressed... channeled [his] fear and frustration and self-loathing into a piece of music". This early draft did not yet have a title or chorus melody, but did contain a structural outline and theme. After Bono had reworked the lyrics, the band recorded the song at Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin. During the sessions, producer Steve Lillywhite encouraged drummer Larry Mullen Jr. to use a click track, but Mullen was firmly against the idea. A chance meeting with Andy Newmark (of Sly & the Family Stone) - a drummer who used a click track religiously - changed Mullen's mind. The opening drum pattern soon developed into the song's hook. A local violinist, Steve Wickham, approached The Edge one morning at a bus stop and asked if U2 had any need for a violin on their next album. In the studio for only half a day, Wickham's electric violin became the final instrumental contribution to the song. Drummer Mullen said of the song in 1983: "We're into the politics of people, we're not into politics. Like you talk about Northern Ireland, 'Sunday Bloody Sunday,' people sort of think, 'Oh, that time when 13 Catholics were shot by British soldiers'; that's not what the song is about. That's an incident, the most famous incident in Northern Ireland and it's the strongest way of saying, 'How long? How long do we have to put up with this?' I don't care who's who - Catholics, Protestants, whatever. You know people are dying every single day through bitterness and hate, and we're saying why? What's the point? And you can move that into places like El Salvador and other similar situations - people dying. Let's forget the politics, let's stop shooting each other and sit around the table and talk about it... There are a lot of bands taking sides saying politics is crap, etc. Well, so what! The real battle is people dying, that's the real battle".

I can't believe the news today I can't close my eyes and make it go away How long, how long must we sing this song How long, how long Tonight we can be as one, tonight Broken bottles under children's feet Bodies strewn across a dead end street But I won't heed the battle call It puts my back up, my back up against the wall Sunday bloody Sunday Sunday bloody Sunday And the battle's yet begun, There's many lost, but tell me who has won Trenches dug within our hearts And mothers, children, brothers, sisters torn apart Sunday bloody Sunday Sunday bloody Sunday How long, how long must we sing this song How long, how long Tonight we can be as one Tonight, tonight Tonight, tonight Tonight, tonight Yeah, yeah. And let me tell you something. I've had enough of Irish-Americans who haven't been back to their country in 20 or 30 years come up to me and talk about the resistance, the revolution back home, and the glory of the revolution, and the glory of dying for the revolution. Fuck the revolution! They don't talk about the glory of killing for the revolution. What's the glory of taking a man from his bed and gunning him down in front of his wife and his children? Where's the glory in that? Where is the glory in bombing a remembrance day parade of old-age pensioners, their medals taken out an polished up for the day? Where's the glory in that? To leave them dying or crippled for life or dead under the rubble of the revolution that the majority of the people in my country don't want. No more Sing no more No more No more No more No more No more No more No more No more Wipe your tears away Wipe your tears away Wipe your blood Sunday bloody Sunday Wipe your blood shot eyes Sunday bloody Sunday Sunday bloody Sunday Sing it Sunday bloody Sunday Sunday bloody Sunday Sunday bloody Sunday It's enough And it's true we are immune When fact is fiction and T.V. reality And today the millions die We eat and drink while tomorrow they die Sunday bloody Sunday The real battle just begun Sunday bloody Sunday Will claim the victory Jesus won Sunday bloody Sunday Sunday bloody Sunday Sunday bloody Sunday Sunday bloody Sunday Sunday bloody Sunday Sunday bloody Sunday

A time when Bono's politics made sense. Maybe the greatest single performance of any song with so much political weight. Bono's vocal's are brilliant.

U2 show so much passion in every song they write. My sister listens to a crap pop band called Little Mix and she says they are amazing - I think Little Mix never show any passion unlike U2's songs about war, drug abuse and politics, all they write about is girly rubbish! I think U2 are the best rock band in Ireland and I hope they stay the best!
@kathisdead99337 жыл бұрын
bands can be amazing in their own different way, U2 for their lyrics and passion but Little Mix is amazingly talented with beautiful vocals and empowering lyrics, let your sister like music that makes her feel good just how U2 makes you feel
