The official music video for Where The Streets Have No Name by U2.

Lyrics:
I wanna run, I want to hide
I wanna tear down the walls
That hold me inside.
I wanna reach out
And touch the flame
Where the streets have no name.
I wanna feel sunlight on my face.
I see the dust-cloud
Disappear without a trace.
I wanna take shelter
From the poison rain
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name.
We're still building and burning down love
Burning down love.
And when I go there
I go there with you
(It's all I can do).
The city's a flood, and our love turns to rust.
We're beaten and blown by the wind
Trampled in dust.
I'll show you a place
High on a desert plain
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name
Where the streets have no name.
We're still building and burning down love
Burning down love.
And when I go there
I go there with you
(It's all I can do).

Life in the 1980s was marked by a sense of simplicity and connection as there were no cell phones to distract from genuine human interactions. People spent their time engaging in face-to-face conversations, and the music of bands like U2 provided the perfect soundtrack to this era, captivating hearts and minds with its phenomenal melodies and lyrics, creating a lasting cultural impact.

@@ricovali1897 You're absolutely right! Cell phones did exist in the 1980s, but they were very different from the smart phones we have today. Back then, cell phones were much larger and primarily designed for voice calls, lacking the advanced features, internet connectivity, and touchscreen capabilities that define modern smart phones. It's fascinating how far technology has come since then!

@@ricovali1897 I think you're missing the point on a technicality. Did the technology of cell phones exist in the 1980's sure. Did EVERYONE in the 1980's possess a cell phone....NO. So, it meant people didn't go around with their heads stuck in a phone. This lead to greater connectivity with people, passer bys. It meant you had a better chance of having a conversation with a stranger then you do today.... I believe the above comment is referencing this truth and the reality of what its meant to society and the individual in general.
@mwj5368

@@ricovali1897 In 1991 I was a personal care attendant or "PCA" for a guy who was quadriplegic. He needed an emergency phone. Under his wheel chair was a brief case that had the phone. In 1991 there weren't cell phones that I ever saw, or if so rarely and it had a kind of stigma to own one making one look exceptional, like some wealthy upwardly mobile exec with executive privileges etc. It for sure is a difference now as compared to then. The epitome of it was when I walked past a popular planetarium in St. Paul, MN on a beautiful summer evening. About 15 or twenty people were waiting at the front entrance, sitting on the steps or on the grass waiting for a shuttle bus. All was silent as virtually all were staring at the smartphone screens, even young couples on a date. I have a smartphone but I use it mainly like a cell phone. I also saw a husband and wife commuting in their car. Both were concentrating on the separate conversations they were having on their smart phones. Like I've heard some say that in the is information age smart phones are like an extension of ourselves as you notice how everyone has one. I wonder now as the Artificial Intelligence Age is upon us too and the exponential growth of that and what the future holds. I think AI should develop with as little regulation as possible as we don't know the pros it can contain, pros in unknown ways that could improve science and the quality of life. Deal with the negatives as they arise, see AI through to its fullest potential as possible. The other problem is now the military has recently developed an atomic bomb 24 times more powerful than Hiroshima and Nagasaki and is probably implementing AI or has done so long before the public knows.

I remember hearing Dusty Street giving the announcement on K-ROQ. I was on my way to work at Del Amo Fashion Mall. I made a quick stop to pick up a few lady friends of mine and we barely made it in time before it began. The music was so loud and clear you felt it in your chest. The sounds, the vibrations and emotions. It was the most exhilarating and electric moment of my life. Something you never forget. What a time to be alive and enjoy life as it was back then.

I remember that when I was in Iraq. We'd be looking for road names and there wouldn't be any, the locals would just call a road the "Road to Baghdad" or whatever. Each province is broken into districts and each house is just given a number in that district, they don't have street addresses, at least not outside the big cities.

Wouldnt really call any part of this song a guitar riff... its mainly him just doing palm mutes and strumming up and down fast with an echo effect. He's not really great at guitar, he's great at working with effects.

Remember I was taking a nap here I Copenhagen, Denmark as a teenager, when they played this single for the first time in the radio. Slowly my brain consumed this guitar and I woke up in a split of a second, sat up in my bed with goosebumps and realized it could only be U2 and then I ran down to the nearest record shop and bought the album knowing that this was going to be a milestone in music. What a masterpiece ❤

I'm from ireland. In 1987 i met an American girl in England and brought her to ireland for a week. She left me this tape. I played it over and over knowing i would soon be reunited as she had invited me to come to Los Angeles to live with her. 6 months later i packed up and moved to Anaheim near Los Angeles to be with her. This song really brings back those memories of the best days of my life.

You know, when I think of exceptionally great, seminal music videos, I guess this video has got to be in the all-time Top 10. I’m sure many hugely popular bands *could* have done it, at their peak. But U2 actually did it. Back when the video was actually released, we didn’t have any internet, no KZfaq, none of that. MTV had barely started a few years prior. So when they played *this* video, you just watched it, in complete awe. Frankly, I’m still in awe of it. It’s absolutely mind-blowing!

I was a young man, a boy really, when this album came out. It swept across America like a prairie fire, and suddenly U2 was the most popular band on earth. Now I am on the other side of fifty, thrilled that I had my tiny role in supporting these beautiful Irish rockers. Their music is the soundtrack of the last four decades, and it is for all time.

This recording is a masterpiece in every respect. The quality, the cuts, the smiles on people's faces. I'm not really a fan of "everything was better in the past", but the people in the crowd look so much healthier, fitter and somehow also more honest than today. That doesn't mean that they were really better off, but everything seems more authentic than nowadays.

Its a song from the late 80s when everything starts moving in the right direction. So much hope, such a great time, so many promises of a bright future for the whole world. If you live in Los Angeles or are from here. i recommend watching this extraordinary video shoot in its entirety.. Unprecedented, in that the location they chose was in "skid row" area of downtown LA, perhaps the most depressing place in CA. Bringing happiness to so many less fortunate people that live on the street and everyday working regardless of wealth or lack of, is a very tall order. I commend U2 for making this happen. You can feel it when you see them dancing like it was the best time of their life. I can't remember the last time i smiled this big :) It's very heartfelt to me, as an Angelino.

@@bensavage4575 they were from KLOS and the female is Rita Wilde...."The video begins with clips of radio DJs informing their listeners that U2 would be doing a video shoot that afternoon at 7th and Main in downtown Los Angeles - a tip and a warning. "[The radio station owners] were really specific about us mentioning that it's not the safest part of town to go to, just so we weren't liable for anything," says radio host Rita Wilde, whose voice you hear first. (In the original video before the reissue, she explains, hers was the only voice.) "They really wanted us to stress that fact." Over on-air banter by Wilde - then co-host of the morning show for 95.5 KLOS - and other DJs, we see shots of the band and crew setting up for the performance on top of a one-storey building, a liquor store (now a Mexican restaurant called Margarita's Place). Crews had earlier reinforced the roof, in case fans somehow managed to climb up."

I agree that this song is legendary, but the idea that the song has no retakes or special effects is tremendously untrue. There are a *mountain* of effects on this track, and while the band initially tried to get it done in the studio in one live take as a full band, by the end of the recording they had done so many retakes of individual parts that nothing of their original one take was left.

@@ids5096 Unfortunately you are not able to experience what many of us did growing up as a teenager in the 90's, however, and I mean HOWEVER. You are still able to listen and watch videos. You are able to keep this decade of amazing music moving forward by sharing, and passing on your experiences. I was 19 in 1987. I remember it like yesterday, and how grateful I was to experience it all. One piece of advice if I may. I am pretty sure you know how to add, and can figure out how old I am now. It may seem to you that this number is a long ways away. Here is my advice. It is a snap of the fingers and you will be looking back and saying. Where did it go. Live your life the way you want to. Be a free thinker, and be accountable for your mistakes, and WRONG CHOICES. Do not make excuses. Failing is not failure, as long as you have learnt from it. Also, just because something feels good, does not mean it does good. Following your heart is nice and all, but wisdom conquers all. Listen to your heart, but use your brain. Just because something feels good, does not mean it does good. Much success to you, and God bless.
