A very special episode of Sunday Swatching to introduce the brand new green watercolour I have created with Art to Basic as part of their Green Developer Team 2024. I wanted to share my first encounter with my new paint, and the first little swatching playtime exploring its possibilities. (Apologies for the slightly croaky voice... but I simply couldn't wait to play!) So please meet Summer Leaves.
Summer Leaves
A green with depth and a double meaning. It captures summer leaves at the height of the season, with the shimmer of sunshine through the foliage in the brighter pigments, and beautiful granulating darks for the shadows.
But there is an underlying touch of melancholy grey in this green. It is foliage that is just about to start making the change to autumn because, as we all know, after only a few brief months summer leaves us, and we have to wait another year for its return.
This green echoes that fleeting joy of rich green summer leaves… just before summer leaves.
Art to Basic make beautiful handmade watercolours - see more here: www.arttobasic.com/ - and find out more about the Green Developer Team here on their Instagram: / c4ltksfiwz3

@melanieanderson1886 The full Green Developer Team Palette will be available in about a weeks' time from Art to Basic, released in two "halves" - a European palette (with the paints designed by artists from Europe - so that will include me) and the American palette (you can guess the rest...). And then I believe the individual paints will be available from November. The website is here: www.arttobasic.com/ (if you sign up for their newsletter, you'll get all the details, in case I've got some of that wrong!).

😯 oooh! Love that sage-y meadow green… beautiful. It reminds me of a childhood book I had that was a scratch and sniff Bambi children’s book. The page had an image of a sage bush that was made from a different paper texture that you had to scratch to activate the scent, and then sniff the stickered image to smell the “sage”. I loved how it brought the experience of this storybook to life from the Disney storybook of Bambi in the meadow exploring. Your paint color you created and swatched reminds me of that lovely shade of green. Just wonderful. Congratulations and your new watercolor you created. 🥳🎉🎉 you must be SO happy. 😀 I’m glad to hear that you are feeling better, God bless.

“Oh wonderful, wonderful, and most wonderful wonderful!” Shakespeare from my Alison Bomber quote set. Gratulujeme Alison! (thank you google translate) That is truly a STUNNING shade of green! How exciting and what an honor to get to create a color. Especially green. The color of nature, the color of life. I love how clear it is and all the different shades you can see in it; like olive greens and yellows. I started to play with watercolors earlier this year and I can’t wait to see this in person! I have a Daniel Smith set of primary colors and have been thinking lately that I would like to expand and get an actual green that I don’t have to mix. And here it is. Congratulations again! I can’t wait to find out the name! I just know it will be pretty and have great meaning behind it. 🤩🤩🤩

I just got your botanical tissue sheet set#8. But I'm wondering how to color them given we use water to gently tear the images away. How did you color yours that you used on your tags? Thanks!
@w0rdsandp1ctures
@w0rdsandp1ctures Ай бұрын
I'm so happy to hear you've got the printed tissue - I hope you'll have a lovely time with it. Tearing with water is only while the tissue paper is still a loose sheet. Once you've glued the tissue down and let that dry, it won't tear any more, so you can paint over the top of it (watercolours or acrylics, or use watercolour pencils, or crayons - whatever you like!). It can make a difference to how the paints adhere or move if you use a coat of clear gesso over the top to give a less slick surface, but it's not necessary in order to colour it. (Or clear matte medium instead of clear gesso - but that will be a different kind of surface again, so it's worth experimenting to see what surface you enjoy most, or works best with whatever you're using to colour with. The matte medium won't be so good with watercolours, but should be fine for acrylics.) There's a video here of me watercolouring the tissue paper in a large journal spread, which has got lots of tips and tricks in detail - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d7OZptV_vrzKgqM.html plus I'm planning to do a A Few Minutes of Fun episode very soon with a pair of tags, using the Mattints and Distress Watercolour Pencils to do the same. In the meantime, there's a Live on the PaperArtsy FB group using the Mattints, which you might be able to watch. I'm not sure whether you have to join the group or not - I don't understand FB! - but you could join anyway if you like PaperArtsy products and want lots of extra inspiration. That one also shows the process of gluing the paper down, and is here: facebook.com/groups/paperartsypeople/permalink/1436001007275202/ Hope that helps - take a look at those links, I think you'll find them useful. Do shout if you've got any more questions. Have fun playing!

Thanks! I did watch your video, so I've taken an experimental piece, glued it down on mixed media paper with matte medium, let it dry, and then put a coat of clear gesso on top. I'm letting it sit overnight before I try adding watercolors. I did find something interesting lately, given your spray/flick process. I use Arches paper for my watercolors and decided to try an experiment. I applied several layers of the same color of distress ink all over, and let it sit overnight. Then I sketched using my Faber castel .01 black Pitt pen, and let it sit several hours. I was happily surprised to see I was able to use my water pen with my Faber Castell watercolor pencils to color the image! No lifting or distortion of the distress ink at all! I'm wondering if the reason is because I had used my Arches paper rather than the typical mixed media paper/tag. Granted I was careful with the amount of water used, but I had expected to have the ink pull up, like on your flick affect, but it didn't, at all. Was like just regular painting. I'm curious to see how your tissue works on different papers, the watercolors may not spread as much as it did in your video if the paper underneath is more of a watercolor paper. Thoughts?
@w0rdsandp1ctures
@w0rdsandp1ctures Ай бұрын
Watercolour paper, although it gives plenty of time for the pigment to move, is in the long run more absorbent than most of the tags I use, which have something of a sheen to their surface. So yes, I would expect the Distress Inks to "sink in" a bit more firmly, and therefore stay put better. And yes, if you're not adding too much additional moisture, that will also have helped. However, I would have thought that the layer of the tissue paper will mean it doesn't really matter what paper is underneath. It's not porous, and nor will most glues be, so the paper underneath shouldn't really have any impact. It's what's on the top surface that will impact how the paint moves. But I'm always willing to be proven wrong! Carry on experimenting!
@fburky
@fburky Ай бұрын
I'm hoping you're right about the paper underneath the tissue paper not being important as the Arches isnt cheap. I'll be doing my experiment on regular card stock given I have a lot of it. Will keep Arches for watercolors! Thanks!
