The gate on the north side of the Victoria viaduct was open when I visited just over a year ago. Looks like the council have made it even harder to access the crossing recently. Such a shame it's closed to pedestrians - any idea why? My (un)educated guess is that the walls are pretty low so may increase the risk of falling over the edge. The view of Penshaw monument as you cross the bridge is stunning and it'd be great to make it accessible again.

I'm not sure! On tiktok, people commented that when the bridge was open it was very windy so perhaps it was a safety hazard or prone to people jumping off? It would be amazing to see it open again in the future 😊

@@northeastnostalgic5071 If the planned extension to the Metro comes into being the viaduct will be used to link up access to Sunderland on the old Leamside line.

Sorry but being Washington born and bred I disagree that Fatfeld, Washington and Penshaw are part of sunderland. We might be under their council these days, but that's all. I like the video though as I know the area very, very well. The area you were walking on the Penshaw side was a hive of industry 100+ years ago with stone from Penshaw quarry coming down the tunnels to be loaded in barges. Plus all the coal staithes a bit further up at Fatfield. There was also a small settlement just past the viaduct called Low Lambton, all long gone. On the Washington side, just by the bridge was North Biddick colliery which closed in the 1930's. Quite a few of my family worked there right up until closure. When I was a kid in the 1970s you could walk across the bridge, dangerous to do though as trains still.occasionally crossed up until the 80's. Used to get the Edinburgh to London 125 trains crossing on a Sunday too. On a rare visit back home about a year ago I walked the area again and was sad to see the barriers, not massively surprised though.

Do you know about the concrete crocodiles lazing on the river Bank at Fatfield? South side of bridge, take upstreamn path between houses and river. About 200m along you should see them. My understanding is they are from the lake that used to be outside the now redeveloped swimming pool at the galleries/ top end of Princess Anne park (Which starts across the river from there) And while talking about the galleries...what happened to the lambton worm clock.

omg we can only imagine these days the hardness of the men who built our bridges... but don't forget the wonderful women behind them who made it all possible...
