Highlights of Sunderland vs Chelsea at the Stadium of Light from Match of the Day. It was a big match for Sunderland as they had to win to guarantee safety, while Chelsea were fighting for 2nd place. Thanks to fred54

So much has changed ten years on. Sunderland are in the third division, Villa in the Championship, Newcastle are doing decently (but not as well as they could be) under Benitez, two of the people in the video (Fulop and Ray Wilkins) are dead, Hiddink has retired and Anelka was disgraced for making a racist gesture.

It was job done for both clubs Chelsea ending the season with a win to take into the Cup Final against Everton the following week and Sunderland despite defeat surviving and manager Ricky Sbragia stepped down gracefully after the game having achieved his target of guiding Sunderland to safety. This was because in the week before this match he had a chat with then chairman Niall Quinn and although Sbragia had an option in his contract to stay on as manager for the following season 2009/10 which would've been his first full season in charge as he took over after Roy Keane's departure the previous December, he felt that the club needed a bigger more experienced name as manager to take the club forward and he felt that it was best for the club for him to step down as manager although he did stay on behind the scenes as club scout and Niall Quinn clearly respected him due to his comments at the end.

2011-2012-2013: Sunderland - mid-table team, Newcastle - 5th place, quarter-finals in Europa League. It's sure true that who laughs last laughs best. Players like Cabaye or Debuchy (part of the French national team) signed for Newcastle, Sunderland can't get such type of players, that speaks miles about the better team.

Oops, oops, oops, oops,....and.....OOOPS. That ended well. Funny how you haven't commented on " the better team " since ( 6 defeats to Sunderland in a row, & relegation ). The better team, hehe. F.R.O.Y.B.A.W.B.

I don't understand why everyone was happy and cheering at the fact that Newcastle went down, we were cheering because we were only marginally better than complete shit? Well being marginally better than complete shit isn't something I'd celebrate about.
