Sunflower - BBC1 September 1982 - March 1985 (BBC2 Midlands And Scotland Opt Out Tape 1983 To 1987)

Now here is a tape which for me is trade-test silverware and my all time BBC favourite! Probably better known as a BBC2 opt out tape with test card PM5544, as presented here, rather than it's original place on BBC1! This tape had many plays and although the wear and tear showed during it's later plays on BBC2, it never did lose it's incredible charm at all! The beautifully composed and often really cheerful, upbeat tracks here are :-

I hope you adore this beautiful iconic tape as much as I do :-).
A thousand thank-you's to my late, great, amazing friend and truly wonderful gentleman Magicgeezer who put this together for me. I could not have even began to put this and so many other videos together without so much help and support from you bro :-) Fella, thank-you for this and bringing the joy of music back to me along with your ever kind, wise and supportive words. Pheebster and I will always love and miss you brother, you're the absolute best ;-)

Erm update: it's actually Fall Aire the tune I remember from 1983!!! Today 20141214 I have discovered "Flute Salad" though as well... Amazing, & long may it continue to be timeless. Music is very powerful & Ceefax is the most beautiful in the world in my eyes.

The track starting at 23:26 sounds a lot like "Let's Do The Latin Hustle" which was a simultaneous hit for Eddie Drennon and also the M & O Band in 1976!

Hi Natasha, I agree it's amazing - today is the first time I've heard the full hour since it was broadcast. Careful look at track listing has confirmed the names of the tracks that mean the most to me, including 1 or 2 I actually used to play on the organ in the '80s. Which is your favourite?

You actually get more than the BBC played on here, because the next tape always started exactly 1 hour after the previous one. They would have faded a few of the tracks before the end to fit it all in in 1 hour. There was also a longish pause between 1 tape ending and another starting. The BBC regional opt out tapes accompanied by the PM5544 always had a high pitch tone between one tape ending and the next one starting which in BBC2 Scotland area in the 1980's was Sunflower ending and Hi Livin starting, or Hi Livin ending and Sunflower starting.

This tape is compiled from releases by US production music label Major Records, from mid-late 1970s. Quite a difference to earlier tapes put together from British and European library music publishers.

Does anyone else notice the 'bum edit' on the bass intro? There's an extra quaver there which ought not be!

BBC North West, BBC North, BBC North East and Cumbria tape player made it sound good quality and the the problem was North West, North, North East and Cumbria was never wasted in no time opportunity play it. Remember one Boxing Day in 1984 during the Christmas holiday and sit down and relax ready to enjoy it the Christmas tapes of the last day on Wednesday 26th December 1984 between 08.54 there's the short Test Card F about 6 minutes then at 09.00 there was Pages From Ceefax, sadly North West, North, North East and Cumbria opted out at 09.05 5 minutes later after 3/2/1 runs of Sunflower either Test Card G or Test Card F with 440hz tone full 1 hour until 10.12 there's a short 440hz tone another tape Sugar Loaf lasts for 20 minutes and went back to the BBC2 network and return to Pages from Ceefax and return the Christmas tapes last day at 10.32 Jingle Bells version 3 half way just in time opening at 10.50. It all happening on the day.

Modern technology & media have allowed all this to carry on & be saved from oblivion. It's albeit 'way past its time' - e.g I'm not 6 any more - but the music is appliable to fresh modern things.

@dxutube Also loving hearing hese Apollo Test Card tracks too. Many of them classics from the old BBC Test transmissons I remember hearing, many I had never heard previously, and also many that were never aired before.

This video also forms part of the playlist BBC Closedown - Typical Daytime on BBC2 - May 1984 to February 1985. If you have entered this video through that playlist, BBC1 network tape Hi Livin' that was also an opt out tape in some BBC regions and nations will automatically play after this video ends

There was PM5544 action in the 1980's on BBC2 with some of Tulsa playing. That was a network wide broadcast. Does anyone have the full Tulsa/Samba Bamba tape download on KZfaq?

Since most of the songs are composed by Family Guy composer Walter Murphy, this Music would make me think of the show.

Walter Murphy had a top 40 chart hit in the 1970's. Every time I hsar it, it makes me think of this tape played on BBC2 with the PM5544 L.R. Murphy is also involved in some of the tracks. Relation or not? I'm always wondering how the length of the youtube videos of classic test card tapes lasting in excess of 1 hour, yet each tape in rotation began exactly one hour after the preceeding one on BBC1 and BBC2. Thst makes it even better value than at the time when they were on air with some of the tracka on youtube lasting a bit longer than they did back then on the network.

Sadly i absolutely hated this tape, the BBC Midlands tape player made it sound awful, and the problem was Birmingham never wasted an opportunity to play it. Remember one Saturday morning when the OU had finished for the Christmas holiday and so sat down ready to enjoy the Christmas tapes between 9 and 1, sadly Birmingham opted out at 9:10 and after 3 1/2 runs of Sunflower went back to the network just in time for the opening at 1.
