Thanks for sharing. Seems like every week there's a new "flavor" of this style inverter just with a different paint job. Only difference besides paint job and the EG4 is the max solar voltage. EG4 can do "up to 500v" (prob closer to 450), but I would imagine most people would be perfectly fine with the 350v of this one. I've been going through and documenting my own "growing pains" with the EG4 inverters and the grid connection. When I started putting out videos of grid connection issues, I was surprised how many people commented saying they have a grid connection as well. Seems like a lot of people are doing what I'm doing where you run off solar/battery for as long as your batteries last, then let the unit switch automatically to grid till your batteries recharge. So not necessarily a UPS situation, but using the solar/battery as your primary source of power and then only using utility as a backup. Keep up the good work!

I have 2 - 6048's in 240 volt split phase parallel for 12kw, with 24 - 445 watt bi facial Canadian solar panels in 2 strings of 6s2p for a total of 220 volts per string feeding the charge controller. Also 2 strings of 8 - L16 (420 amp hour) 6 volt battery's (16 total) for battery storage. The IDLE CONSUMPTION is well worth it and a drop in the bucket! If you charge at a high enough rate to carry your loads AND charge simultaneously AND "conservatively conscience" from 8am-8pm you'll have no problem making coffee and running an electric heater in the morning!

Thanks for measuring the actual UPS switching time and keeping the manufacturers honest 😀. For the oscilloscope if you have a dual channel you shouldn’t need to catch it with a freeze frame manually. Just plug in a DC power supply such as a small power brick to the same power source and connect the second channel to the DC output. Set a single shot trigger on the falling edge of the second channel connected to the DC and it should trigger when the power cuts out (you may need to put a load on the DC side to make it fall fast enough if the power supply has bigger capacitors in it).

That thing is a BEAST! It's very cool how powerful, capable and flexible today's inverters have become. This one seems to check every box for both grid-tied and off-grid use cases. It's not cheap, but I would also say it isn't crazy expensive when you consider everything it can do.

Not sure why people would not have a UPS between the inverter and computers just as a extra level of USP switching, my UPS's already switch superfast, so having just a small UPS with enough to bridge the 100ms gap would be the simple solution.

Something to note on the switching time: When the units are "forced" to switch over to battery, they seem to take longer than when the software does the switching. I have had this with 3 different inverters. My lights will flash off for a moment when I shut the breaker off and it is forced the battery mode. But, when I have observed the switching where the software does it (battery is charged up enough), the switch-over is nearly undetectable. I would try and re-do this test where the software does the switching instead of pulling the plug. I would guess there will be different results.

Is this a whim or is it showing that there may be an additional type of product you review? I just ordered an LVX6048 because I am tired of regular power stations that won't turn on automatically when solar comes back. Plus I wanted 240V for my welder and plasma cutter. Ironically I don't even care to see a test of the specs as I trust these all in ones, at least from the major (re)brands of the 3048, 6048, 6548 variants. But your test of the switching speed showed me that maybe we do need these things to be tested. I am surprised that it switches so slow. I never plan to use the AC for anything but charging when solar is out, but its good to know it can't do that.

@@johnstark4723 I would have to use very thin panels as it is a single axle trailer and weight is a issue. I already have 2 100 watt fold outs mounted on my roof so I can run my 2 door upright 4.3 cu ft RV refrigerator hooked up to a Kodiak X2 solar generator which has LFP batteries and holds about 1200 watts but it runs my refrigerator 24/7 and rarely need to touch that separate system. But also have another Kodiak X2 solar generator just for cooking, lighting, and entertainment. I just have to manually set out 2 light weight 200 watt solar panels, each 8’ x 2’ that fold up to about 22” or so and come in a zipper shell. I set them out and get the second Kodiak charged up in about 3.5 hours usually every other day. But in a pinch I can charge them both with my Honda gas generator in less than 2 hours tops if there is no sun or I need a quick charge. The Kodiak X2s charge in about an hour at 1180 watts input AC, so I have to charge one at a time if it ever comes to needing to charge both of them if it rains for a few days. My Honda gas generator is 2200 watt output and charging 2 Kodiak X2s would be 2360 watt draw so I never tried to charge both Kodiaks at the same time. But normally my 2 100 watt solar panels that are already on the roof and the one Kodiak X2 is enough to keep my refrigerator going all the time and I never have to deal with that system or that Kodiak. I like your idea about having some awnings but damn I’m getting too old for another project. I need to save my strength for times when I least expect to need it. It seems like things are heavier than they used to be. Lol. Has anyone checked the gravity indicator? Lol. I have a good little system and by dividing the solar generators into 2 systems, I can carry each generator to wherever I need it. And can connect them if I need a momentary burst of wattage. I do that for the microwave as it runs at 1400 watts. The Kodiak will handle 1250 or less for at least 20 minutes which is enough to handle a pizza wheel pizzazzz, 1240 watts, a George Foreman grill, 740 watts, an 2 slice toaster, 760 watts, and a small hot plate for eggs about 780 watts at the proper cooking temp. So I only need the microwave briefly and it is easy to connect the 2 solar generators, just not a super convenient touch of a button type system. All I do is go from one disc golf park to another disc golf park all across the USA. I live nomad and have no official home anymore. It’s liberating and my needs are small. I used to own a small OTR trucking company but sold all that in 2008. Much happier now. and meet tons of positive people. Great exercise for an old guy. Been throwing a disc or frisbee for 53 years. I decided since all I ever did was work and work and work for everyone including my family and now I am all alone, it is my time to do things for me. Wife died, kids are good, I’m old and trying to have fun and keep my body moving. If I were younger, Maybe a retractable awning with light weight solar panels, due to the weight, but honestly I’m tired of projects, and energy in my body, is just like watts in a battery. There’s only so much. You take care. I’ll be huking discs until I die. Only so many years left to do that. Lol.

I have a Growatt that claims similar switching times, but it is definitely longer when the grid is physically cut. When I go into settings and change from Utility to Solar/Battery/Utility the switching is much quicker. I wonder if that is what they are measuring? It may also impact switching times if it is charging the battery with AC vs being in bypass mode.

Really great review. Such a great job covering all the important aspects of this unit. I am impressed with this unit overall. I agree about the affordability. Only ~100 watts of overhead, that is really not too bad. Considering it's such a large unit. On the pros side, it has so many great features, ability to run directly off panels without batteries, 8000 watts of solar charging!, different modes... great stuff. As far as the cons: I am confused as to why it has the higher voltage requirement of 90+ volts on the input side in order to use direct from panel... as opposed to 48 volts since that is the battery voltage. Another con: the poor UPS switchover time of 100 msec... arg. and disappointed that you have to buy a separate unit to get 240 VAC. LASTLY: I can't tell for sure, but I didn't see any mention about the ability of this unit to handle any deep cycle lead acid type batteries or other brands of battery packs...

You could consider connecting a few panels to a DC element, or, In my off grid bus I use a AIO 3kw inverter & a 240 AC 4000W motor controller/light dimmer with or without a timer, when my batteries are near full it kicks in the 50ltr hot water system element and you can dial in any wattage to the element as the controller varies the AC voltage output to the element, or I can just leave it running at a reduced rate as my batteries charge up a little slower, it works well so far.

I got the 5000w version with the intention of using it as a heavy duty UPS in a server room. I'm shocked at how slow the transfer time is. I'm testing it with an old decommissioned server for now, and so far the beefy power supplies in the server are surviving the inverter transfer, but man it makes me nervous. It seems to be similar to the transfer time on your 6500w version. I haven't measured, but you can actually see lights flicker if you plug one in. It's a shame because otherwise this unit is pretty sweet.

My secret lab is full of cells and inverters, dc to dc modules and boxes that all encompass to someone's ridiculous amount. It took me four hours to install a water filtration (six level), one for the installation. There was an hour of tool bring in and clean, and two hours for modifications required. I chuckle as a tradesman who plumbs, electrifies and fits gas. It"s getting old as far as how many minutes are lost due to imperfect conditions.

Not meant as a complaint, just a suggestion. It'd be great to see tests involving RFI from these types of things. A lot of these MPPT devices and inverters produce horrible RFI that interferes with ham radio and other radio related devices. An SDR could probably be used to test this at a relatively cheap cost and would provide very valuable information.

@@HOBOTECH Probably isn't a "meter" that could do the trick, but as a simple test, like you Peavey amp test, you could use an inexpensive shortwave radio tuned to several different bands to "clear" spots. It would be great if you knew the switching oscillator frequency in the inverter, because the RFI would most likely be at integral multiples of that, ie. if the oscillator runs at 50 kHz, the RFI would be every 50 kHz as you tune up the spectrum.

Did you ever measure the efficiency of the inverter. I have seen many reviews of the Voltronic 6548 based inverters, but no mention of efficiency at high power. Only overhead. The manufacturers always specify peak efficiency or maximum efficiency. How efficient is the conversion from DC to AC at 1kW, or 3kW or 6kW?

I have an LV6548. Very similar unit. So similar that many say this one and the EG4 are clones. But the specifications are slightly different. These models will handle a bit higher VOC if I caught that part right. The MPPSolar unit is 250voc per side. Which brings up a question. You said it had an MPPT where the MPPSolar has 2 MPPT's. The way the solar inputs are on this unit is the same as the LV6548 so I believe it has 2 MPPT's as well. In my area the MC4 solar input connectors are not code compliant. Code requires them to be hardwired. But F the code, and the whole permit process. It's a DIY system and what they don't know, doesn't hurt me. It's a scam anyways to increase the value of your property in order to get more property tax from you. My next question is since they all appear to be the same unit, has anyone tested if the MPPSolar LV6548 will parallel with this unit, or the EG4 unit? My hunch is yes, but at $1100. I'm not willing to test that theory out. All on all the LV6548 has served me well for 2 years non stop. Never had any issues. I also have never had any computers shut down as it switches over. You can barely catch an led bulb briefly blink almost undetectable. I also have a bunch of annoying Phillips Hue bulbs that default to On if they experience a power outage and they aren't affected by the switching, which they shouldn't be. I agree the interface leaves a lot to be desired but the Watchpower app makes the settings simple. What does bother me is the delay in the app updating with real time. I don't like the fact that it appears to be running through their servers instead of connecting directly through my wifi. You can plug a computer into the USB, or serial ports and get more detailed real time data. I enjoyed the video. It's one of the more in depth videos on these all in one units

The eg4 can’t be used in conjunction with this because the firmware is completely different. The lv6548 can though. As long as they are both running the same firmware and it’s updated. To be honest, I think the mpp version may be the best still. Lots of blinking lots with the eg4. And I’ve heard some of the same with the sun gold versions.

12v panels are too small for this, use 450w or larger panels and at least 6 of them, better yet more than 12. The idle consumption of this unit alone is over 100w x 24 hours = over 2400w per day, that's before running any load.

I just completed a build on a 13KW trailer mounted version using 2 of those units in series to make 120/240 split phase, and there is 30 KWH worth of Lifp04 batteries. And yes it will provide just over 100 amps at 240 volts 26 KW start up, and 54 amps Continuous. However the ones that I have, have a deferent paint job, which says EG4 on them, but they are identical otherwise. And yes the high Idle current is a big problem when running off the 4 big 445 watt panels that are mounted on a tracker on the unit, But with the 3 ground mounted 10 panel arrays, it's far less noticeable. However there is something that I would like to point out to you, that all of your secret lab experiments did not reveal. Unfortunately these inverters are of high frequency design, hence the reason that they only weigh 43 pounds, that being said, it makes them pretty efficient when fully or near fully loaded, but when running a few lights and maybe powering a TV or computer and even a refrigerator the inverters are using more power than the devices that they are powering. But the big issue is changing from the grid, while charging in bulk mode not really not noticeable, however when the batteries are floating, these things are putting a 100 voltage spike on the Entire grid, and I discovered this because I had one of these units hooked up to the batteries, so that the active balancers could get all of the brand new cells charged and balanced, and I had the charg current turned down low, and the cells were almost finished, I was in the kitchen starting to fix dinner and my New Wave induction cook top was giving me fits it would work for a little bit and then it would cool off and then go again for a few minutes and then cool off, and I almost threw it away and ordered a new one, when I suddenly remembered that, that induction cooker would not run on a modified sign wave inverter, when I was driving a truck, I had to buy a pure sign wave inverter, or drag out my inverter generator, which is a sign wave inverter. So got out my fluke scope meter and saw that spike, so I unplugged the charger side of the inverter from the wall outlet in the back room, that was on a hole different circuit than the kitchen circuit, but it was on the same phase, and even though I am on an underground feed and only 80 feet from the transformer that 100+ volt spike is present right in the main panel on the 100 amp buss bar. So I just wanted to let you and whomever might read this, know about this problem, because it could effect sensitive electronics!!
