My wife and I have been fortunate to have lived in Crete for almost fifteen years. The " secret " of life here is to adapt. Our first meeting with our solicitor was scheduled for ten AM we, in our British way, arrived at 9.50 and our lawyer, in the Cretan way, arrived at 10.20! Slowly, slowly we adapted to this relaxed and casual lifestyle. But make no mistake the Greeks are hard working and resilient people who have overcome many obstacles. But work here is seen as a way earn a living not the reason to live. Family, family, family is the mantra in the home as a matter of survival. The village and the country come together in times of crisis and this has been tested again and again. We have, as you have, learned their values.

Thank you Robert for sharing this. What you told is so true, we really know what you mean, as we have experienced it ourselves. Even if Fra's culture is somehow very similar to the greek one, adapting to that casualty and relaxed lifestyle was harder than expected. It's incredible though how much it can teach about the value of life quality. We are now incredibly grateful for that time and these lessons! Can we ask you why you decided to move to Crete originally? 😍
@robertwilliams37303 жыл бұрын
Having travelled around Greece over many years Crete seems to have all the good things in Greece distilled to it's very essence. Hard working, a disregard for unimportant rules, a caring sharing attitude to family and a genuine welcome to visitors. A casual remark about how good a lemon tree looks and a bag of lemons are on your doorstep the next morning. Nothing asked in return just a the pleasure of giving. Enquire about a son, daughter or family member and out comes the picture album and an afternoon spent talking and laughing. Greece is Greece but Crete is Crete. 😊

As a Greek who grew up his whole life abroad, I found this very refreshing. Apart from all the life lessons you mentioned, one of the most valuable lessons my parents taught me was to appreciate and learn from other cultures. Embracing our differences helps us see things from a new (and more positive!) perspective.

Greece sounds amazing! When I travelled to Colombia I learned that in North America we have way too much food at our disposal and it often means overeating or making bad eating choices. Plus, in Colombia I felt so much more at peace. There too they have a slower pace. I miss it!

@SunnyKindJourney3 жыл бұрын
Yes! Changing the pace: sometimes faster, sometimes slower, is very important! We live in a society where we should be productive and efficient 100% of the time. This is not just possible so finding the balance is really important. Glad you liked the lesson! 😊

I just realized now watching this video that 99% of the time when you go to a restaurant- taverna in Greece with your friends or family, you are going to share your food!! We never order a meal just for ourselves, we always discuss it all together before ordering. This seemed strange for my foreigner friends, but for me is extremely normal. Food and taste is an experience, not just a necessity, that should be shared, like a good joint! :P

Nice video. The only thing I would like to comment about is the first thing that you mentioned; slowly slowly. It is true, in general but you can see it usually outside Athens. If you are slow in Athens someone will get in front of you in line, you will stay out of the metro wagon, or bus, you will not find a parking space etc. The quality of everyday life in Volos, where you lived, is much better than in Athens. But of course there are less opportunities.
@SunnyKindJourney3 жыл бұрын
Having been to Athens more than five times, I agree with you. There the life seems to be more like a typical metropolitan busy life rather than laid back. I travelled to more like 20-30 cities in Greece during my time there and the σιγά σιγά lifestyle was very visible especially in smaller cities and in the islands. I hope their mentality will not change! Thanks for commenting! 🙌
