We left the Long Island sound and sailed back to Manhattan through the East River. The sun was setting behind the New York City skyline when we reached the city so we were treated to the most amazing views. Because of a security zone in the western channel we were escorted by a coast guard vessel while passing by the UN building.
The next morning we got woken up by a threatening thunder storm and witnessed the Statue of Liberty getting struck by lightning.

That’s what you call living 👍 great watching your sailing life 👍 just wondering what is the portable fish in the background for and is this something that your normal boat equipment couldn’t cover ? We are doing the same lifestyle shortly and we r always interested in these things 👍 cheers for the info on the lightning on a boat as well 👍 keep safe 👍🍺🍺

You have given you boys a gift that will stay with them for the rest of their life. We take a break during our broadcasting work, to watch your travels. It's relaxing as it is informative. I must compliment you on your composition skills as well as your narration. You have a gift for what moms can do. Just a quick question, did you have a preference of the Lagoon Vs the Privilege cat?

Great episode! I just stumbled on you site. I’m taking delivery of a new L46 next week in Annapolis. Can’t wait. I was just researching weather I could get through to the Long Island Sound from NYC with the mast and I am happy to see I can. Any tips?

Great videos, really interesting to see what sailing life is like. There are some parallels to ‘caravanning life’ here in Australia, lots of people doing what you guys are doing with the kids here, but in a caravan, it’s a big industry here. Out of interest, if you were contemplating doing what you guys are doing, once you have bought a boat, how would you figure out how much you would have to budget for boat maintenance? Keep up the good work! The SOPER Family 👍

Thanks a lot! We have had a few campers before we moved onto the boat, so much fun with the kids as well. We only camped in Europe which is probably not comparable to caravanning in Australia. On a new boat the budget for maintenance is low, I can only think of oil changes at the moment and cleaning products.

First time viewer and commentor. 2 items 1) how do you like the bifacial solar panels and how have the performed? Any idea how much power you are getting from reflected light hitting the bottom sides of the cells? Reason I ask is I see a lot of cruisers getting solar but vast majority are going with one side version even on an aft arch and given the limited amount of space available, think bifacials would do better even if they weigh more. 2) I noticed in the first episode when you bought catamaran, that technicians were draining saildrive of milky oil- so seal was damaged and salt water entered the drive. About 12 yrs ago a blog by catamaran SV Ocelot did the following with their saildrives- drilled and tapped each saildrive in the oil cavity, inserted a nipple and ran hose to a translucent oil tank (like a car engine coolant tank) high in the engine room, added 1 pint at a time marking level of each pint. By checking the level of oil in the tank they could determine if the saildrive seals were leaking before any damage occurred. Just passing along.

Hi Robbie, thanks a lot for watching and commenting! About the solar panels, not sure how much extra power we get from the bottom side compared to regular panels but we are very satisfied with these solar panels. They have exceeded our expectations. Great tip concerning the sail drives, but we haven't had any more issues afterwards, we believe the damage was done because the oil level was too high.

@@SailingNohma Glad to hear saildrives are maintaining their oil. Interesting you think problem came from overfilling and perhaps increased internal pressure. If that's the case then the drilling, tapping with hose to a reservoir tank would eventually add oil to the saildrive. As far as your bifacial panels given , it seems, you one of only a few cruisers with bifacial panels- consider doing the following experiment- ....with the dinghy down and sun light is coming from the side (dinghy not blocking sunlight reflected off the water, measure the amount of watts coming in, then cover the tops of the panels with something that blocks sunlight from reaching the cells- the watts you get will be from reflected sunlight hitting the bottom of the cells. Won't be 100% accurate as some of the reflected light from uncovered panels is sunlight that first passes thru the spaces between the cells , is reflected and captured by the bottom of the cells. Might make for an interesting part of a future episode- just a thought.
