** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

Suntory Chita can be found in duty free shops at the airport! Also if you are in Aichi Prefecture in Japan, check the Aichi special version of Chita. Chita by they way is named after the Chita Peninsula where the distillery is located.

Firstly; like. Secondly; thanks Daniel for giving us some background on the product you're trying. I actually really enjoy the story behind the whisky; much to the chagrin of Rex. Thirdly; thanks Daniel for expanding our knowledge of the whole NAS (No Age Statement). I'm a firm believer in your theory of NAS working both ways as you say. As always; well done boys.

What i really like about your Reviews is that you are able to bind all the hints you get from whisky to a single memory of your own. Whenever people ask me why they taste different things in the same whisky as i am i point to the Whisk(e)y Vault. What is really easy to understand watching your videos is that a guy from Texas cant have the complete same experience from a Whisky as a guy from Bavaria, Germany. Because we grew up with different smells and tasted completely different things. So we may agree in things like sweetness, caramell, dark fruits and so on...but never in the memory we recall from tasting a whisky. There are many people that review Whisky on youtube...i think you deserve your spot among them because you deliver something i dont get from the other...thanks for your effort.

Redbreast 12 is my all time favorite whiskey. Just last week I discovered a very similar whiskey also from Middleton, also sherry casked, but obviously younger and for half the price. So WTH, I see Rex grab and smell the bottle, then replace it on the shelf without comment before drinking the last 2 drops from a bottle of Redbreast 12. I would really appreciate it if you would compare the two and see if you agree that the Power's Select is about 85% there compared to the Redbreast 12. Cheers.

I see The Chita all over the place in Japan and thumb my nose at it. But now I understand it better, gave it a try and enjoyed. The Chita is the low end position within the Suntory whiskey world. Its the high end product coming from the low end Chita distillery, located in the industry-scape of Nagoya. The distillery is really an alcohol factory, mass producing alcohol in column stills for the universe of Suntory products (and others) that are not craft, for example canned chu-hai and the convenient 2L jugs of shochu and "whisky" on the bottom shelves of Japanese convenience stores (7-11 et al) and Aeon. The distillery looks for the outside like a gasoline refinery. No joke. The Chita is the same wholesale alcohol but aged in casks and put in a kanji bottle that mimics Yamazaki and other high end brands. The product is easily drinkable, has a wide distribution strategy, and comes in varied sizes. So it's the entry whisky for younger consumers, those on a budget who can't swallow the swill on the bottom shelf or need a decent mixer. I recently purchased a 180 ml bottle at my local 7-11 in Tokyo!

Have only ever tried Scallywag but like it. Shame shipping is so high. Have you ever done a comparison of Tullibardine and Glenmorangie? They both do oak, sherry and sauturen cask finishes. Tullibardine does a burgandy wine cask as opposed to port cask finish. Tullibardine is NAS and all versions run about $50.00. Might be an interesting comparison.

Hey guys, question, what is the significance of color in a whiskey (assuming an "honest" color here, no dyes added)? I'm assuming darker = older, which probably leads to more of a wood taste?
@FrostJarl
@FrostJarl 6 жыл бұрын
If you factor out food coloring in it, the color can be affected by a few things from what I've noticed. 1.) If it's a new or used barrel(just taking a guess based on the difference in color from bourbon and Scotch since bourbon uses new barrels and Scotch requires used) 2.) The climate it's aged in(temperature and humidity over the aging process) 3.) The amount of time it's been aged Whiskies will generally be darker when they're older, but a NAS bourbon will usually be darker than a Scotch that's been aged for 10+ years. And the barrel notes will usually be stronger on the bourbon(big part of the vanilla flavor associated with it) Anyone else in the comments feel free to point out if I'm horribly wrong on any of this, I'm going mostly off of really limited exposure and things said in past videos on the channel.

So I’m relatively new to this stuff. About 3 years ago a friend had me try scotch for the first time. Idk what distillery it was from but it was very smoky and reminded me of what it smells like when smoking meat. I recently bought highland park 12 and love the slightly smoky flavor but remember it being much more prominent in the other scotch that I mentioned. If I were trying to find something close would I be accurate in looking for a good Islay scotch or should I be looking at a different region?

Instead of angel food cake and buttery popcorn, I got moldy bread and chlorine. First dram I couldn't finish yet. Oh well....I only bought it to round out my Suntory collection on the shelf anyway!

Think you fellas can pull off a poor man's Highland Park 25 YO? My top five drams of all time just enjoying last night but it is now discontinued and oh so expensive to replace. Help!!

Hey guys what's a good no peat or extremely lightly peated single malt? Would Springbanks Hazelburn be a decent one in this category. Many thanksu
@WhiskeyVault
@WhiskeyVault 6 жыл бұрын
Definitely not those. Even the Hazelburn, while no peat, has some serious iodine and brine notes. I'd say go for Speysides or a few Highlands with low peat. Maybe try Glenfarclas first/

I see Timorous Beastie all over the place and I've been really really curious about it and the comments we got about it were: "I really dig this one." ahh well, at least I know to stay away from that garish blue bottle. I see that bottle all over the place and can only think it was a failed cologne that they rebranded as a drink.

hey somm and mooch i have story in true daniel fashion it was recently my friends 30th birthday and seeing he likes an odd whiskey i decided to use my new found mooch levels plus the tiny bit of whiskey knowledge picked up from this channel. we had $350 aussie to spend which isn't a lot here. we got him a nikka coffee grain full bottle $235 (ill add the prices) and after me explaining to whoever would listen about the nikka suntory story split subtle nuanced still worked for 10 years. the bottle shop near me breaks whiskey into 100ml bottles to make it easier to taste and try more expensive whiskey so we got him as 6 of these 100ml bottles stagg jr $350 full bottle oban distillers edition $150 full bottle macallan double cask 12 $109 full bottle ardbeg dark cove $180 full bottle benromach organic $100 full bottle sazerac rye $140 all of this i will most definitely try with him hahahaha but this is not the end while i was at the party i noticed the bar had a laphroig 10 and i must admit i love a good bourbon, scotch is still yet to really grow on me but i thought i give it a whirl any way and wow was i impressed. it wasn't really the taste or the smell though i did spend about 10 minutes just nosing my glass for that smoke and camp fire smell which was just amazing to come from a drink but it was more just the experience of trying something so different to what i was expecting and this is after listening to you 2 describe it over and over again i hope this is in part read out on the channel it will great to hear you guys go through my selections of the whiskeys for him to try to get him going and well rounded into where ever his whiskey travel go from there

90% I know now about whisky, I learned it from Daniel. So tell me Rex... remind us... why are you here, again? Oh btw, would love to have you guys review Michter's Small Batch Bourbon :) It has become my everyday bourbon and I doubt that I ever wanna taste another brand of bourbon every again.

You should review the whiskies you dislike the most. OR You should review whiskies from various movies. Just for fun.

It's likely the super butterscotch on the nose. maybe start with more of the maritime scotches first.

"Aged in a combination wine sherry and bourbon cask" Do they build one cask out of three or are they transferring from one to the next for a unspecified period of time?

I think John Glaser from Compass Box tried, and the SWA (scottish whisky association) got pissed off at him and fined him.

Wanted you guys know that I really enjoy the videos. I've only been a viewer for about three months, but have been making up for lost time. I'm a former chef and archaeologist, and now a third grade teacher in Colorado. I'm interested in how I can become a Som. Also, if you haven't tried the stranahans sherry cask, check it out 😊 Thanks guys. You give me a mini vacation with each video.
