I didn't read that as "RPO is as bad a movie as Pixels is." It seemed more to me like he meant "RPO uses its references in the same haphazard manner that Pixels does, rather than the subtler, better-integrated way that Wreck-it-Ralph does." But I could be wrong.

Ready Player One is a book about a society with no future trying to escape to a fake past that lacks context because it's impossible to build anything new, and corporations try desperately to control and dominate a cultural sphere they don't understand. The author unknowingly made a crowning tribute and satire of our own cultural decline and that's why RPO is secretly smarter than it was meant to be. It's Vaporwave: the Movie

One issue that none of the reviews (even Pat's) do not touch on is the Resistance. After Wade meets Art3mis, they go into a warehouse full of people and then she says, "Welcome to the Resistance." That played out crap wasn't even in the book. She comes off as a solo, independent woman who doesn't join clans, but then it turns out she has a room full a people; with tattooed muscleman included. This network of Resistance fighters was a waste of time because within 20 minutes they are found and captured by the baddies, and are never mentioned again. And the fact that these people never seemed to go into the Oasis with Art3mis just made me wonder why they bothered introducing this aspect.

@JackOfen6 жыл бұрын
Abdega Because that stuff has withstood the test of time and is still known, so the references are basically timeless. If you make modern day stuff then you don't know what will truly be remembered in a few years and it would hurt your movie more. Tl;dr it's less risky to use old pop culture. Also seriously? This is not a movie studio wanting to be relevant or anything. This is based on a book with the premise of the creator of the Oasis being a giant nerd for the 80's. The movie studio didn't come up with the idea.

Honestly I love the rest of the movie otherwise, *the sheer severity of hate* I feel is undeserved, a little maybe, as biased in favor of it as I am, but when he brought it up it definitely brought the _ending_ down a bit for me, a pretty legit point. My only defense *_may_* be that it was only temporary, a fun favor from a new friend, like getting ready for some special informal date, rather than a complete personality and fashion sell-out, and most of the time she would be back to being herself, rather than a permanent shift. Nonetheless, I can understand y'all feeling a bit downed after the fact with it ending on that note.

“I would argue that masturbation is the human animal's most important adaptation. The very cornerstone of our technological civilization. Our hands evolved to grip tools, all right-including our own. You see, thinkers, inventors, and scientists are usually geeks, and geeks have a harder time getting laid than anyone. Without the built-in sexual release valve provided by masturbation, it's doubtful that early humans would have ever mastered the secrets of fire or discovered the wheel. And you can bet that Galileo, Newton, and Einstein never would have made their discoveries if they hadn't first been able to clear their heads by slapping the salami (or "knocking a few protons off the old hydrogen atom"). The same goes for Marie Curie. Before she discovered radium, you can be certain she first discovered the little man in the canoe.”- Ready Player One

Things they cut: - The Funeral for holiday -Wade being fat -The planet being Fucked to the point Wade wants to leave the solar system - Wade being a low level newbie who can't afford to go anywhere -H posing as a white guy in the Oasis -Irock is a wanna be who hangs out with H and Wade who pretends to be a know it all hotshot and ultimately rats on H and Wade once they get their first key - Sho being Shoto and also Japanese. - The first key being in a dnd module & trail for the key is a duel in Joust - The gate is located in a copy of holiday's childhood bedroom playing on a Tandy & then they play a VR adventure game version of the old movie Wargames where you play the main character. - the second key is VR version of Zork & gate is in the replicant test in the Tyrrell Corp building, the old game black tiger by capcom. Here Wade gets Leopardon from SPIDA MAN sentai. -Daito is killed by IOI in their real world by being tossed out the window and frame it like a suicide. -The dance party where Wade fucks up by telling Artemis he loves her is thrown by "Og", the parter of Holiday, and his character stops the fight. -Wade basically tells H to piss off after his verbal fight with Artemis - Wade shaves his head, buys a fake identity as IOI thinks he's dead and moves to major city near Oasis' main servers, becomes a recluse who lives under an assumed name literally spends all day working out using a VR rig that has a run pad where he has to physically walk and run in order to go anywhere in oasis. buys a sex doll (not joking) and is generally in a meh state. -IOI get the thrid key first, Wade finds the key but is unable to think of a way to get to the third gate, which is on a custom DnD campaign planet . - He becomes desperate enough to purposefully allow himself to be captured using fake debt he put on the false identity to allow him to basically become indentured to IOI - he is able to hack Into IOI on the inside and grab the information they have on everyone and the 3rd gate, including the video of Daito's death and then escape by zeroing out his fake debt. - Og reveals he's been watching the events unfold using admin access to spy on the protagonist group and wants to help more directly -invites Wade and the other 3 leads who are alive (Shoto, H & Artemis) to come to his place to fight the final fight, Artemis and Shoto arrive first as they're not anywhere near H & Wade are. - this is when we find out H is a lesbian woman as she explains her back story as her and Wade drive. - Artemis, who has never met Wade in person in the book at this point refuses to see him until its over though he's wanting to see her - turns out you need 3 people who have the crystal key to get into the gate , so you can't enter the gate. -the Final gate is a VR recreation of Monty Python and the holy grail. - Wade Watts meets Samantha Cook for the first time in the garden of Og's home and the book ends before they talk. it's overall a lot of radical changes, some for IP reasons but others because of time and feel good factor, I'd like to see RP1 properly done as an HBO style mini series. but yeah can't win em all

funny enough, when The shining bit was introduced, there was an audible gasp in the theater, and it actually got a couple of laughs as it went on. But i'm sure it was just because it was unexpected and relied on the fact that it was gunning hard for that shining nostalgia. I'll admit............. I was one of those people.

One thing you forgot to mention was that, in a movie whose virtual world centered around so many licensed characters, the main hero team was basically all "DeviantArt OC: The Team". Like, Mary Sue/Marty Stu to the max there.

This is a legit quote from the book: “They’re called the “sixers” but most people call them the “Suxers” because they suck.” I hate this shitty book so much, Jesus Christ.

I’m pretty sure in the book, Artemis’ face thing was purple and like really jarring at first. The movie made it barely noticeable.
