Both 7 irons, but different lofts. Should have given him the most comparable lofted clubs regardless of the number on the club. That way you can actually compare if they're really any difference in performance, and forgiveness type stuff.

c s exactly. Maybe there isnt much between them once you take loft into accounts. Rob could have enjoyed the blade but he put himself off cause of the distance and had difficulty accepting he hits a normal lofted 7 iron 130 at best.

The dispersion ring was tighter with the p730, would have been a very interesting test had they used the p730 6 iron. I think feel may be the biggest factor between these kind of clubs. The blade will let you feel every but of misshit but the mcb will hide the bad feel, in turn not feeling as punishing.

That's the point though isn't it? Joe blogs getting fitted for new irons will want to hit his 7 iron a certain distance, he won't care it's actually a 5 iron with 7 stamped onto the bottom. It's what the manufacturers have done for years. Personally I don't care what number is on the club as long as it goes somewhere near where I want it to, but some people are more interested in bragging about hitting their '7 iron' when their mate is hitting a 6.

Ashley Jukes the point is he could just use a different number iron from another set. It's why so many GI iron sets only really need to be a 5-GW rather than 4-PW that works out to be a similar gapping from your longer clubs to your wedges

Very interesting video, as always. However, you would hit one less club with the forgiving set, so it would be interesting to the the 8 iron from that set compared with the 7 iron from the blade set. That comparison would be more meaningful.

James Fortino isn't the point though that many people will buy the chunky club because the tracker says they're hitting a 7 iron 15 yards further? I bet most won't even look at the lofts of the clubs.

I think the correct test would be to choose a set distance, say par 3 hole at 150 yards. Then you choose a blade and a forgiven iron and your goal is to stop on the green. Which one has easier time to achieve this? Can you find a forgiven iron that has the same stopping power for this distance, yet at the same time has more consistency achieving the goal?

Rick, I’ve been watching and learning from you for over a year and you continue to inspire me to improve. I regularly lose to golfers who beat me by 2-3 strokes knowing they didn’t count several mis-hits, and count putts that miss by a couple of inches. It’s refreshing to see a teaching pro have a day like the rest of us and use it as an opportunity to encourage us and to put the GAME in proper perspective. Thanks!!

Golf is always about sacrifice and trade offs and for most golfers it's an ever evolving journey. A great test would be for a high handicapper to hit the blade, and a player to hit the SGI. I've never hit a players club and I've always been intrigued as to if I'd even be able to make contact with the ball! Great video as ever Rick.

Excellent video. Very interesting too. Personally i want height and spin from my irons but I'm not a good enough ballstriker for blades. So something a little forgiving but stops fairly quickly for me. I certainly don't choose a new mid-iron by the fact it goes further than my current mid-iron, especially as you've just shown when it's down to much stronger loft
@MrScalesie
@MrScalesie 6 жыл бұрын
Lots of guys saying should have used similar lofts as opposed to using 2 7irons but then shaft length would come into play but I think Rob is alot more confident with the game improvement club hence higher club head speed. This is why the P770 / Ap2 size irons are the most popular irons with amatures traditional lofts compact behind the ball but still a bit of meat without looking like a shovel. Just my opinion
@scubamr2

Rick & Rob, don’t listen to all the haters talking about loft, obviously there is a difference in loft that creates a difference in distance. I actually really liked this video, my take away from it was one of where people are, will dictate different things, Rob being a mid handicapper like myself I think is in a position where he likes the feel of a blade / forged club, but maybe needs a little help on the distance. The truth is that most of us don’t hit the ball that far, I currently hit the Callaway Apex CF16 and hit my 7 iron about 160 carry, if I went to a higher lofted 7 iron and maybe went to 140 it also means that I wouldn’t hit my 5 iron 180, which means that 180 yd par 3 is hitting a 3 iron possibly.... personally I would would rather hit my 5. I think at the end of your video you brought up a good point about balance, personally I think a 7 iron comfortable distance is between 150 and 180 (carry) it makes playing enjoyable, it means a par 4 can actually be attacked in 2, if I were only hitting my 7 135 as it was in the video, it means that a 200 yd approach may be out of reach. Or if it is my gaping may be off if (7 = 135, 6=145, 5 = 155, 4=165, 3 = 175) it would make for a defeating day in golf On even a 400 yd par 4, let alone 450 etc. On a side note, good for you rob, you must have a significantly better short game than me :)
@mrmjdza
@mrmjdza 5 жыл бұрын
For me it used to be heavily weighted toward distance... Now it's mostly about feel, forgiveness and spin. Being able to trust my club and know that it'll stop quickly is more important than how far I can hit a 7 iron. I'll never forget the first time I spun a wedge 20 feet back off the front of the green... Far more rewarding than the first time I hit a 9 iron 130 yards!

A channel named, TXG golf compares irons with the same lofts no matter what. They adjusted a 6 iron loft from a GI iron de-lofted club to a traditional loft and then they compared that club with a 6 iron blade. Surprisingly, the GI iron had more backspin and a lot more height than a 6 iron blade when the lofts were the same. The reason why the GI irons need to be de-lofted because GI irons have a lower center of gravity with their clubs causing shots to fly too high.

Rather control than distance. I bought the P7MC and it took a couple of rounds to get used to it. Much weaker lofted than my old ones, but now I am almost hitting them the same distance. Better feel and of course a bit more punished when not hitting so well, but you also force yourself to hit better.

Distance is important but hitting the consistence distance is the most important. I currently play forged blades and I like the fact that my 7 iron, which is 35 degrees, travels 155 to 159 yards every time it is struck correctly. So I guess consistency is more important than distance in my opinion.
@johnnypenso9574
@johnnypenso9574 6 жыл бұрын
Any club struck consistently is going to travel the same distance, there's nothing magic about blades in that regard. The big difference would be in the off centre hits and that's where you'd assume the GI irons would shine.

Rick, it looks like the comparison was between a 7 iron and a 6 iron ( looking at loft only). Rob did a great job, he’s a great ball striker and a real asset. For me the forgiving club would be my choice, for sure. The club head designations wouldn’t mean much to me it’s all about the loft, my 6 iron has 30 degrees, it doesn’t really matter what it’s called 30 degrees is 30 degrees. Great test.

One thing that wasn’t mentioned was the difference in the overall lengths of the clubs. I believe the MCGB is about an inch longer than the 730. That too will make a difference in the distances achieved with each clubs. Longer lengths translate to higher club head speed which translates to more distance. It would also be interesting to know the flex points of the different shafts. The flex point also has an affect on the launch angle, i.e. lower kick point = higher launch angle, etc. I wonder if TM compensated for all the weight in the head of the MCGB, which is designed to create lots of loft, by using a shaft with a higher kick point.

An interesting test. To answer your question at the end. I’m about a 16 handicap. I couldn’t care less whether I’ve got to take a 7 iron or a 6 iron for a 150yd shot. Depending on wind conditions, uphill/downhill, you might go up or down a club anyway, so why should it matter. For me the most important factor would be consistency and least variation of outcome. That I’m going to connect cleanly; that the direction is going to be where I want it; that I can be confident in the approach shots and control the landing.

And I don’t think they are actually measured for exact loft he is just going off what the catalog says is standard so it’s very possible that instead of being 29.5 it’s actually 30.5 and the blade isn’t 34 is 35, because manufacturer tolerances are +\- 1, sometimes even 2 degrees rick really needs to throw these on an actual loft gauge to verify or have them verified to the exact spec by the manufacturer.

Wow - what a great test. What would also be awesome would be if they could hit the clubs from those sets that are closer in loft side by side. So for instance - which blade iron has the same loft as the mega-cavity 7? I tend to not like the idea of advertising distance on clubs when all they've done is strengthen the loft - it just seems off some how

Always good fun with you and Rob. As you said these clubs are at the extreme opposites of the spectrum and there are offerings out there that that offer help to the mid handicappers without these extreme loft changes and low spinning comprises. Ping I 200's come to mind as does the TM 750's. Lots of others from Callaway and Titleist. I am a high single digit geezer golfer( 8 cap, 68 years) and I play Callaway Apex forged irons, nice feel, good distances, I wouldn't give these up more more spin and super soft feel, I don't hit blades consistently and don't hit them very straight. Doesn't bother me to not have the game for the shiny blades, they are pretty though.Cheers, have a great holiday season.

Mr. Shiels I have a suggestion. IMO a more apt comparison is to fix a distance instead of fixing a club and then use the clubs that'll get to that distance. In this case, for example, it might have been the P730 5 iron vs. the CGB 7 iron. The reason is obvious. At 155 yards that's the two clubs that Rob is going to use into the green so we need to compare spin rates, peak heights and angles of descent for those two clubs. Comparing both 7 irons is in effect comparing two different distance clubs which not only isn't a fair comparison it's also meaningless since you'd never use those two clubs for the same shot. Please consider this, especially in Rob's hands, for future reviews.

I agree with some of the comments about comparing clubs by loft, not number. Also the descent angle was skewed by two very high ones on the 730, otherwise they would have been identical.

I would like to see his consistency between a 6 iron for the p730 vs the consistency for the 7 iron of the mcbg.

Thanks Rick & Rob, that`s a very interesting club comparison and thought provoking, though your comments regards "stopping power" isn't quite true. With the TM MCB hitting into a green out on the course you would be using say a 6 Iron instead of a 5 or 4 Iron so the relevant spin and stopping power would balance out. This is where on course testing would be useful to see how the clubs perform out on the Course. Take care both and have a "Banging Christmas"!

What might be a better comparison here Rick is choosing 2 clubs that have a similar loft i.e. a 7 iron in the MCG and a 6 iron in the blade with a loft of around 35 degrees?

Rick. Can you do a comparison between a blade 7 and mcgb 8. Also- looking at the distribution (circles around the ball flight graphic) the mcgb looks bigger than the blade. Interesting video.

Would be nice if you have discussed forgiveness between the clubs more. I do not care to much about distance but for my uneven strike forgiveness is key.

Im a fairly high handicapper who’s been using an old set of Slazenger’s for the past 4-5 years. Yesterday I had a shot of a P730 7 iron and my world has turned upside down. It felt incredible, it went FURTHER than my current 7 and I couldn’t miss. The consistency and feel was night and day. Does this mean I need to get myself a set of these blades or am I jumping the gun?

How about 2 clubs with the same loft?
@Ravenhurst

I'm a high handicapper so I'm suppose to be using very forgiving clubs. But as I was testing Titleist's AP1 as opposed to the AP2's (with the same shaft), I found the AP2's easier to hit. The data on the trackaman also shows the same carry distance for both. I found it weird until I realized that more forgiving clubs are heavier with its chunky size which makes the weight across the whole club biased to each end. The AP2's with its forged and smaller head makes it lighter hence giving the club a more balanced weight distribution that actually made it easy for me to swing. ☺

Hi Rick, which clubs would you suggest that sit in between these two sets for the mid handicapper?
@1reklawm

The only thing that matters for me is distance control. I want my 7 iron to go the same distance on my full swing. Now if I purchase a new set of irons I'm leaning more towards a forgiveness than a player's club/blade because miss hits with a forgiving iron set don't punish me. Good video Rick! My request or suggestion is, you hit both irons and compare the facts but in a way that compares not 7 iron to 7 iron but the club from each set that hits the same distance and compare the game improvement aspect to the player's aspect and see if game improvement design improves your game.

Hi Rick, love the club review videos! Keep up the good work! I was wondering if Rob could do testing with the Taylormade P790 iron, would love to see how a mid-handicapper would do with that club? Thanks!

@Rick Shiels Golf great video, but would be better to take loft out of the equation, and do the same test with 2 clubs that are the same loft regardless of number. It probably looks like it will be a 6 iron blade, vs the 7 iron cavity. What did surprise me was that with the cavity irons you got more height even though the loft was less.

Interesting! As a 74 year old senior golfer with a 12 handicap, I find exactly opposite results. I hit my forged irons further than game improvement irons as long as you compare clubs where the lofts are the same. And I hit the forged more consistently.

Hey Rick great channel! Club number doesn't matter, loft and shaft length do. Perhaps match lofts without letting the tester know the club numbers.

Setting loft aside, I'll take the forgiveness over looks. I hover at about a 13/14 HC, with almost identical swing speed and ball speeds to Rob. I love watching videos with Rob because I can identify with his sentiments... Cheers!

The first 5:30 seconds of this video should be shown to all high handicaps, BEFORE they buy a set! It’s the perfect display of why you should get fit, and play something that fits your game as well.

Were the shafts the same lengths on the 7's or have they delofted the club and also put a 6 iron length shaft in the Cavity 7? If the Cavity 7 is going the same height as the 7 blade would you then call the Cavity a true 7?
@ronyoung66
@ronyoung66 6 жыл бұрын
Rick, Any reasonably educated golfer knows that loft will always be the most significant factor in terms of distance. A slightly more educated golfer would then consider things like max height, decent angle, and spin rate to determine what he is giving up for those additional yards. What I would really like to see are two clubs, one blade and one exceptionally forgiving model, made by the same manufacturer with the same loft, lie, length, and shaft. If that test could then be performed by a scratch golfer (like you) and a relatively average golfer (like Rob) I think the results would then be considered much more meaningful.
