Great call, Rev! One of the greatest NFL Films clips of all time. The epic voice of John Facenda - the music in the background. I was blessed to attend that game. Allen's run was electric - mythological - unbelievable. As we saw him break into the clear and it became obvious he would take it to the house, I and all Raider fans KNEW he was sealing the win - over a team which was favored and possessing some NFL records on offense. And we all instantly knew what Al Davis would later say "this was the greatest Raider team of all-time". Tragedy that they didn't qualify as a dynasty by winning a couple more in the next few years. But this game stands at the height of Raider Mt. Olympus. The combined talent was astonishing. Three Heisman trophy winners - Plunkett, Marcus and Greg Pruitt - were on the field in silver and black that day.

John Facenda, the greatest, most magnificent, most impacting and most inspiring voice in the history of the NFL. I became a die hard football fan by watching NFL films produced by Ed Sabol and the narration of John Facenda. I became an eternal Raiders fan since the Raiders moved to Los Angeles in 1982 and when they drafted Marcus Allen that same year. We will soon return to glory for sure. Imagine how many of those plays in Super Bowl XVIII would have been considered fouls today? Nothing like the football of those days when only true, courageous and talented men could play football. The rules created by the NFL in last few years were to control the defense and to allow the offense more opportunities to score. Many football fans who are new to the sport of football found the last Super Bowl to be boring because it was a low scoring game and where the defense dictated the game. In my opinion that's the kind of Super Bowl game that I like because it takes tough players in a team to win. Go Raiders!

As magnificent as Marcus Allen's performance was that Black Sunday, I still think that the MVPs should have been Lester Hayes and Mike Haynes. It was Hayes and Haynes that blunted the spear of the Redskins' attack, and everything else that happened came after.

I have them, but the intros are old and are of poor quality. Actually, a few years ago, to honor the memory Steve Sabol, who had just passed away, I uploaded the first 20, which were uncut versions from the DVD sets, and included the Sabol's host segments from the late 80s. I uploaded them on my original channel, but that ended up getting that channel two copyright strikes, so I deleted that channel and started a new one, which is my current KZfaq channel. ESPN used to prepare for some of professional sports' biggest events by airing edited films of about 15-20 years worth of that event's history as a warm-up act. They did so with the Super Bowl, the NCAA Final Four, the NBA Finals, the Indianapolis 500, and the U.S. and British Open golf championships. But with the rise of sports-centered networks, such as the Golf Channel, the NFL Network, NBA TV, MLB Network, and SpeedVision (which is basically now the FOX Sports Network), ESPN likely lost the rights to air those classic sports event films. Only the Masters Golf Tournament really gets that kind of treatment from ESPN Classic now, as they've shown marathons of every Masters film since 1960 in the lead-up to the Masters, but again, almost every one of those presentations is highly edited, with only a few of those old Masters films being shown in their entirety.

As a kid i football was my world and even a 9 year old i didn't watch games like a regular fan. I watched it with a mindset to lear everything about it. My dad was a casual fan. But he loved betting with the bookies. And my dad always asked me for my insights when filling out his slips and i made my dad alot of money. Unfortunately the one time i cost my dad a small fortune came from this Super Bowl.😢 I felt so bad. Even after that slip up my dad still wanted my opinions after but i remembered telling my dad i can't rightfully do that "Remember Black Sunday" My dad won alot more than he lost. I just remembered the look on his face. I knew even as a 9 year old kid Superbowl 18 was over and money was lost when Jack Squirek picked off Joe Theismann. I wasn't even a fan of either team but to this day i have never been so stunned by a games outcome. And i never took up betting. I'll just stick to the free games where i can pick up a little extra money 🤑

"A screen pass and they looked like they knew it was coming!" They did. And while LA probably would have won anyway, that play was a crusher. Without it, when Washington scores in the 2nd half it's suddenly a 1 score game. As it was, LA still had a double digit lead, and didn't feel threatened.

The Raiders scored TDs with 12 seconds to go in the 2nd quarter, and in 12 seconds to go in the 3rd quarter. What are the odds of that?

Given that you score (at least) twice, it's 1/900.
@BaddogSports8 жыл бұрын
TheWatchernator HAHAHAHA! Is that real? Or are you making that up?
@TheWatchernator8 жыл бұрын
MrBaddog7676 Actually, I'm not making this up. For 2 scores to happen on the same second mark in 2 quarters, then you have 3 moments in the other 45 minutes with 60 seconds to score the second TD. If you score on, say, 12 seconds remaining in a quarter. Then you have 3 other quarters to also score on the 12 second remaining mark. 45 minutes, have 60 seconds. 3 seconds are good. 45*60/3=900. The chances are 1 in 900, given that you score 2 times of course. For it to be exactly in the second and third quarter. Then after the first score in the second quarter, you only have 15 minutes with 60 seconds to score the TD in the 3rd quarter. The chances of that are also.... 1/900 :)

@@wallpaper2a551 I didn't prove your "point" at all. The result of this game wasn't an "upset." Howie Long and Reggie Kinlaw destroyed the Hogs offensive line. That's no surprise. Lester Hayes and Mike Haynes shut down Washington's receivers. That's no surprise. Cliff Branch regularly burned Anthony Washington throughout the game. That's no surprise. Marcus Allen ran for over 100 yards in a big game. That was no surprise. Jim Plunkett played poised in a big game. That's no surprise. Rod Martin beat Rick Walker's block and stuffed John Riggins. That's no surprise. Do you detect a pattern here, numbskull? You see, son, this was not an upset. It was a miscalculation. An upset is a surprising win. An upset never carries a winning margin of 25+ points. The Raiders hung 35 points on the 'Skins earlier that regular season. The difference was Marcus Allen sat out that game with a hip pointer and Mike Haynes was a New England Patriot holdout. Get your facts straight before you make moronic comments to expose yourself as an idiot. In 1986, they matched up again. Marcus Allen ran for another efficient 100+ yards, the defense of Hayes, Haynes, and Long held the 'Skins to 10 points in Washington but lost 10-6...Because Marc Wilson was the QB. In '89 and '92 the Raiders beat the 'Skins. The Raiders were 3-1 vs. Washington during the Joe Gibbs era. Back to where you belong, junior.

It's very hard to win a game against two shut down defensive backs, even if you are the highest scoring team.
@cjs831729 жыл бұрын
911Gameover Especially against a defense that had twice shut down arguably the greatest passing offense in the history of the NFL near the end of the regular season, which that Raider defense did when they shut down the Air Coryell Chargers, considered by many to be the greatest passing offense in the history of the game, even to this day. That Raiders team knew that if it could shut down the Chargers of Fouts and Co., it could shut down anyone, including the high-powered Redskins.
@manuginobilisbaldspot4248 жыл бұрын
+cjs83172 By '83, the Chargers weren't quite the same. They could still score against lesser teams, but they only scored 3 in Pittsburgh, 14 against St. Louis, and 6 at Denver. Wasn't just the Raiders who had started to catch up to Coryell's offense. And BTW, in the last game of the year, it was Ed Luther that started, not Fouts.
@cjs831728 жыл бұрын
Yes, Fouts had injury problems in 1983 and '84, which affected that offense. And that makes it more amazing that they had their way with the Cowboys and were really competitive against the Redskins that season, beating Dallas and nearly beating Washington with Luther at QB, because Luther started both of those games. But the receiving corp was still as good as it got, and that's a big part of what made that offense so dominant. And Luther and Bobby Duckworth had their way with a supposedly dominant Bears defense in 1984. And if the Raiders DBs could dominate the Chargers receivers, they didn't figure to have trouble with the Redskins' receivers in the Super Bowl.
@cjs831727 жыл бұрын
The regular season encounter between the Raiders and Redskins came before they acquired Mike Haynes from the Patriots, because that defense was certainly not a championship-caliber defense early that season. In a five-game stretch (weeks 5-9), they allowed 34 or more points four times (38 vs. SEA and DAL, 37 vs. WSH, and 34 vs. SEA), losing three of those games. Not all of that was on the defense, especially against the Seahawks, but a team with a defense that had as much pride as the Raiders had must have found it galling to have so many points scored against them on a weekly basis. So with the defense springing up leaks all over the place and two games with the Air Coryell Chargers still to come, the acquisition of Mike Haynes in mid-November (after that five-game stretch of defensive generosity) sealed up that defense, because with Haynes on one side and Lester Hayes on the other, they could take away the opposing team's top receivers (something that was vital in those games vs. SD), allowing the rest of the defense to concentrate on the running and short passing game. Only an inexplicable second half collapse against the Cardinals marred the second half of the season, but that might have been the best thing to happen to the Raiders, because it forced them to focus a little harder for the post-season, during which they never trailed or were threatened at any time.
@miami80896 жыл бұрын

The Raiders were simply unstoppable in the 1983 postseason. They destroyed Pittsburgh and Seattle in the AFC playoffs, then made Washington look like a junior high school team in the Super Bowl. I would put their run of playoff dominance up there with the 1985 Bears and 1989 49ers.
