Smaller than a LED Light Bar, The Baja Designs, Squadron XL lights are the best small package off road lights I could find while doing my research. If you watch my video review you will see how bright they are and how many features it has which made it a clear pick in my book. I wanted reverse lights for backing down the trail, backing down a boat ramp or even backing down the driveway at night.

As somebody who has been subscribed to ChrisFix for quite some time now, I must say that I'm utterly ANNOYED by the random people saying he is getting paid for advertising and he isn't showing us products he actually likes or uses. Firstly, if you know anything about ChrisFix, you would realize that this guy is not a typical youtuber--he actually wants to help people learn. I watch most of his videos, and I have received a response from him on EVERY video I commented on. Obviously, this guy is dedicated to helping the people who follow him and is genuinely invested in teaching us about cars. Secondly, if we are going to use your logic(that he is only reviewing more expensive products to get them for himself), why has he reviewed regularly-priced products as well? Finally, for those trolls who have really irked me, I suggest you get a reality check. A NORMAL person would thank ChrisFix for posting multiple how-to videos a week (which, if you are incredibly ignorant and somehow don't know, probably takes the guy hours to edit) and for helping us learn how to fix our cars so we don't get ripped off by dealerships and garages. If you're complaining about a KZfaqr like this, you are an idiot.

Nicely said. Chrisfix is the standard to which you tubers should be held. Quality, unbiased, awesome editing, to the point, informative, cannot say enough great things about chrisfix. I’ve had multiple friends subscribe and learn. I’m sure he gets approached A LOT for sponsored product reviews and obviously he doesn’t engage in that either.

Luis Payan I would go with projector lenses. You can retrofit them (or maybe a company makes kits for your car because it is a commonly modded car. Then you can run any bulb as bright as you want and the light will project right in the spots you need. Start with headlights. There is a night and day difference btwn projector lenses and regular lenses.

Hi Chris, I have an HID system which i had professionally installed in my 2007 Jeep Patriot. Unfortunately, the computer did not like the system and kept flashing on and off. The installer told me this would happen as its a common issues with Dodge-Chrysler vehicles. Now that i have Halogens back on, i have no use for the HID and was wondering if somehow they could be wired up as auxiliary lights direct to the battery of as back up lights as shown in your video. If its possible to wire as back up lights or even custom front fog lights, what kind of an enclosure can i use to cover them with. Will i need to buy a x2 Headlight assembly or is there some other hack i can do. The system is an H13 bulb, color temperature 5000K of the Kensun brand. The Jeep does have a stock H10 halogen foglight built in but when i compare next to someone with HID, both headlights and foglights combined look pretty dull. Also, if front or rear aux lights are not possible for this HID system, please provide some info on how i can build a cigarette lighter socket-hand held spotlight system with it. i did not find much information for this youtube so i would love for you to post a video on this if convenient. Thank you.

+Ankur Akolia Before you go to the expense of installing something like that as aux. front lights, check your state's laws. Some states have specific laws regarding the number and intensity of front-facing lights, so adding an extra set of lights (or replacing your fog lights with HIDs) might get you in hot water. Granted, it may never even be noticed unless an officer actually sees them burning at night, but it's still something to consider.

Bill Bunyack Haha, when you need them in the boat ramp and on the trail, it becomes a little different of a feeling I suppose. You cant see anything at night out the back with the stock lights and even with them on the truck for a little over a week, I have used them a lot. Already I was backing down the boat ramp at night and I was able to see my boat, see the side of the ramp, see where to stop, and also get all of the gear into my truck bed without using another light. So I guess it really depends on the application. I definitely get where you are coming from! Sure, a road car these are an expensive option, but for off road applications and for what I do, these are a lifesaver! And thanks for the feedback on the review! I appreciate it since I just started doing reviews and any feedback is helpful to make future videos even better! I can think the video is great, but hearing it from others helps verify it!

ChrisFix Hey, I hope you didn't think I was criticizing your purchase decision. Those definitely look like excellent lights, and I'm sure you won't regret spending the money on quality. You'll probably be moving those lights on to your next truck, and maybe the one after. Now that I think about it, the KC Hilites on my B4000 were cheaper, but after a number of years, they're showing their age and I'll probably replace them with LED lights anyway. So how much money did I really save in the long run? Just a thought -- what about replacing the hex head mounting bolts on your lights with some nice stainless Allen button-head bolts. It might make them slightly harder to steal, and they're inexpensive. As for your videos, I'm really impressed with their quality. Even though I consider myself a somewhat experienced DIY mechanic, I still learn from your videos, but you explain things very clearly so that less experienced people can easily understand, also. That's a tough combination, but you've got it. Your photography is great, and your editing is really tight and organized. Your narration is really well thought-out and to the point, and keeps things moving a good clip. Even though some of it is simple stuff, I don't ever get bored. Plus you don't have all sorts of flashy intros or other tedious jack-assery. All good stuff, and no filler. A lot of people have technical skills, but very few have the ability to relate the information as clearly and succinctly as you do. Keep up the great work, and enjoy those lights.

John Kinnane I am pretty sure there is a baja designs in Australia. You guys probably have some awesome offroading spots out there! I was honestly impressed of how well these were made. Do you think LED lights are better than HIDs for the headlights & fog lights ?
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 9 жыл бұрын
Randy Jimenez You cannot really get LED headlights that are good yet. The key really isnt the light, but the lens. If you have projector lenses then you will have a great pattern of light. You can run a regular bulb in projectors and get amazing light output!

Chris. Another great video. If you were to have a single light installed, what kind of light spread would you be looking at? I want to add a single light ( because of cost) to the rear of my dodge grand caravan. Backing up at night (and in the rain) has always been challenging. Having one of these would certainly reduce those moments when you can't quite see as good as you would like. I want a light that can give me a minimum of 20 feet in distance with a spread of 15 to 20 feet close to the the rear of my van. Thanks
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 8 жыл бұрын
+Gerry Jamieson It all depends some single lights have a 120 degree spread. You might be better off with 2 cheaper lights. Or you can get one of these lights and center it.

+Gerry Jamieson If you want a BD unit, I would check out the Baja Designs S2 (SII) They're 2100 lumens and you can get them with a wide cornering lens. I see them for less than $160 on ebay. I have a single Squadron on my motorcycle (over 4,000 lumens) and I have no problem driving by it on a 60% dimmer with a tinted visor. I actually think its still rudely bright at 60% but it keeps me safe.

Have you come across any good LED headlights? I need round that fit a 1969 Cougar (or mustang). The 45 year old technology jist does not put out a good or safe light. There are kits available for halogen but I want 100% LED. They eat less amps and are more versatile. Thanks for the video again.
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 9 жыл бұрын
wolfeman351 I have not seen a good LED headlight that is DOT approved. The problem is to get the light output of a headlight, the LED bulbs have to be huge to dissipate the immense heat LEDs put off. I would try doing a projector lens retrofit. Projector lenses can be found from junkyard cars like a bmw. Then you can run a regular bulb or even an HID bulb. The projectors "project" the light right where it needs to be so you can run a brighter bulb and you wont blind people. That is my take on it. I will keep my eye open though because I am looking into headlights myself. My truck headlights are really bad. I am thinking about doing the projector retrofit myself.

@chrisfix
@chrisfix 9 жыл бұрын
toy96 Gotcha, well that is great then because you got the expensive part out of the way(with owning projector headlights)! What I would do is not waste your time on ebay. Those HIDs dont last. I have had numerous friends who try them and they blow out in less than a year. I would go to a junkyard and find a car with the HID lights and take them from that car. The OEM HIDs are well built and last a long time. BMW, Cadillac, Lincoln all have them. Try to find one that you can fit into your stock system without messing around with wiring. You might even find an adapter online for your bulb to HID ballasts. Then you dont need to wire anything new. Good luck! I just thought of one more thing. See how much they are from Acura. I know it will probably be expensive, but it is worth a shot. They should have HIDs for your car as an option (I would think) so they should have parts.

High quality bright BD XL LED lights but used for the wrong application. BD makes great OFF-ROAD lights but the large XL size mounted below the rear bumper are vulnerable to be knocked off. Smaller auxiliary LED reverse lights would be a better choice from various top tier brands for reverse function.

CodysDesigns Do you have projector lenses or regular headlights? If you have regular headlights you cannot get HIDs. You need projectors first. The projector lenses aim the light so you dont blind people. HIDs are like using your high beams but all the time. If you dont aim them, they will blind people, and you dont want to be that person lol.

@chrisfix
@chrisfix 9 жыл бұрын
CodysDesigns Projectors are a lens that looks like a round, glass ball. Google, "headlight projector lens" and you will see what I mean. A normal headlight has a shiny background and a bulb that reflects off that surface. The projectors use a lens to aim the light. Let me know what you have and we can make some decisions from there. For a Honda Civic, there are so many aftermarket parts if you dont have projectors you can probably easily get them.

Hello Chris; Great video, my name is Jonathan La Salle, owner and operator of JL Sno-Plowing in Marlborough, Ma. I need your expert opinion. I have purchased many light set ups for my Ford F-350 Super Duty and I have damaged every set. I snowplow with this truck and my biggest gripe is the inadequate back up lighting. I mounted my lights under the bumper and they got wiped out either by snowbanks or other vehicles in traffic. I attempted to mount them on the bumper but became an obstacle when opening the tailgate. I just saw your video and love the lights but I am specificaly looking for a light that I can mount on the bumper at either side of my license plate without impeding the view of the license plate numbers. What would you recommend? The four light system may be too large(my opinion). I would prefer a two light system inline vertically. In other words a set of four lights two on the left and two on the right. I want something with the same warranties and capabilities as what you mentioned in your video. I currently have two cheapo halogen lights from Wal-Mart and they have worked the best. They are not weather tight or moisture resistant but after my fourth pair I used a siliconized clear caulking that painters use to seal all of the seams and the screws. The reason why I am in the market for a replacement is because the bezel is made out of glass and after cracking it is a matter of time before water gets in and fizzes the light. Help please! Hello Jonathan, what I would suggest for your application is some flush mounted lights.You said you only want two lights and flush mounting them will keep them out of the way so here is the perfect product which will be way brighter than your setup now: www.bajadesigns.com/ProductDetail?ItemNumber=481003

@chrisfix

ali amiri haha, the camera pics up light differently than you eyes. In real life you dont go blind unless you bend down below the bumper. It can be dimmed though and there is a switch that I ran into the cab to dim the lights 50% (it will probably increase LED life too).

I put a $35 pair from Amazon on my F150 and they're more that adequate. Also, I bent them over 2x this winter backing into snowbanks. There's no protection down under the bumper. Save you $ for protected areas. Also, Also, they're an EAZY GRAB for would-be thieves. TomJV

Not necessarily true. Baja sells a key set so if someone wanted them, they would need to cut through the steel bracket to get them. In any case, nothing is safe.

Is this legal? I mean, making your reverse lights super bright?
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 9 жыл бұрын
It depends on which state. When you are backing down your own driveway or you are on a trail or on a boat ramp, it is perfectly legal anywhere. You can also dim them 50% so they are not as bright. The other thing is since they are tucked under the bumper, they are only bright down low so they are not blinding at eye level (and they are flood lights not spots so that is easier on the eyes). The bumper kinda works as a "cutoff". In my state I can pass inspection no problem with these lights.

I make repair videos all of the time and they wont be stopping. Since I installed the lights, I wanted to make a review video.

Nice lights man! Love me some better back up lights but these are ouch to the wallet. I did try something much cheaper on my ranger, got some led bulbs for backups from buggman and they are alot brighter for sure, big bulbs just barely fit in the housing. I also added some brake/turn signal strips he sells which I love these! img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/savage03/My%20Ford%20Ranger/20140822_215352_zps0ffcbb27.jpg Quick video I did on the strips. vidmg.photobucket.com/albums/v187/savage03/My%20Ford%20Ranger/MyMovie_zps69bd41ba.mp4

ChrisFix Yea I love the strips and wasnt to spendy, wanna say he charged like $20 or so think it was 2ft each side. Easy to wire really, I went in behind each housing and tapped into the ground and brake wire. Should get a shot of the reverse while in the drive way to see them on the ground, I was backed in and were on a slope.

I was thinking the same thing. If it were me, I would either mount them in the step of the bumper (and relocate the license plate - but that creates new issues), or cut out custom openings in the bumper and mount them inside the bumper. That would provide the best protection for them.

Rob Parker Yea, it is pricey, but the quality and light output is amazing. The way I look at it, you can spend $150 for a light bar on ebay and in a year you will need a new one, or the light output will diminish. These lights will last forever, and if they break, you get it fixed or a new one for free. Plus, they are insanely bright. But yea, it all depends on what you want/need/can afford.
@Longday709

ChrisFix I am in a couple F150 forums and I hear (read) good and bad, but there seems to be 2 constants, CREE LED's are good, and everybody wants more exterior lights. What makes it a CREE LED exactly? Its a type of SMD LED on a board and its a brand depending on who's telling the story, everything cant be CREE, but everyone claims to be selling them. So what makes a $200 or a $50 CREE (I should be using quotes every time I type CREE) I am going to install a single 2" "CREE" 10watt, 1200LM light, 3 year warranty, flood pattern, sealed metal housing, $40 on EBay, US stock, same looking light from China is $18, there has to be a difference so I will buy one of each and see. Its under $60 for both and since I solved my reverse light/backup camera issue with 2 projector reverse LED lamps in my truck, so its just something to play with. Did you tap your taillight wires for the relay or your trailer hitch wires, if you have a hitch? I cant tell, the lights are too bright. Also, did you add the dimming switch? Where did/will you mount it? I like your work don't get me wrong, these are just to expensive for a lot of people, myself included, more like toy when that money could do a lot for most vehicles. I think that's where the negative or harsh feedback is coming from. One day we watch you make your own penetrating fluid to save some cash, now you have $500 lights under your bumper. I think you sought these out and bought them, some may think they were a "gift", LOL. A daylight LED test will show you a lot, inside or out.
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 9 жыл бұрын
So all CREE is, is a company. They make all types of LEDs. Chip style LEDs, bulb style, etc. They are supposedly at the forefront of the technology and made a name for themselves a few years back in marketing properly and I am sure they are good because everyone uses them. The LEDs are not really the expensive part, the research and development in getting a bright led to not overheat is tough. These LEDs get HOT! That is why you see light bars with a bunch of small 3w leds instead of just having two, 100w leds. If you can figure out how to cool a 100w led in a small space, like the size of the Squadron lights, or even a little bigger than that, let me know and we will be rich! The second most expensive thing in the R&D is making the housing for both cooling but also to be strong and waterproof. The ebay lights fail because they will get water in them. That kills the lights. Keep me posted on your LED comparison. I am curious the difference! As for the install, I will have a video up next week on how I did everything. I tapped them into the reverse lights not the tow package (since not everyone has a tow package).
